In 1960, Ruby Bridges became one of the first African American children to integrate into an all-white school in New Orleans. Today, she shares how overcoming racism takes the heart of a child.

The fact that a parent looked at a little girl and said “I’m going to hang her” makes me so incredibly angry
@bayougirl6833 жыл бұрын
@Spank Buda Ruby’s mother did not know someone would do that. None of our parents knew what to expect. Don’t be angry at them. They did what was right. I was 12, but my siblings were 6, 10, 11, and at 4 different schools. We were separated not only by age, but also by gender. If our parents had not supported this, nothing would have changed. The only people at fault were the ones who were making the threats, and our all-white school board who made it harder than it had to be. I wasn’t traumatized, I was just annoyed and angry. I kept my head up, and my mouth shut, and I did my schoolwork.

I will NEVER forget this situation. We lived in Mississippi at the time, and racial division was very, very much in progress. But I will never understand how a people can hate you because of the color of your skin. When I began to read the Bible, and the stories in the Old Testament that talks about the life and journey of the "children of Israel", it seems we're still having the same struggle, GOD HELP US!!

God, her story tears me up - to see a beautiful young child threatened & called names for the color of her skin - yet, remarkably, she doesn't appear bitter and, in fact, she has used her experiences to help others. I wish I had been able to walk into that school holding her hand, letting her know that not everyone hated her. Just to give that small comfort. Thank God for her courage & strength and for her teacher's caring presence.

Watching this little story brings tears to my eyes because I am just from learning through devotion about Christ's words "love your enemies, do good to those that despise you and bless those who curse you". Ruby Bridges prayed every day on her way to and from that school "Father forgive them for they do not know what they do". Today so much has changed, and so much hasnt, but indeed one can say that Ruby Bridges, practicing the principle of non-violence and love with great courage, overcame the hatred and ignorance of those that segregated her with resolve. Indeed one cannot mention Ruby Bridges without mentioning all those who worked tirelessly through the NAACP, the teacher, psychologist, neighbors and good people that chose to stand and support not just Ruby Bridges, but her entire family and through them, people of color. In spite of the challenges we see today when it comes to black people, God has been faithful, and the changes are still coming, albeit slower than we had anticipated. Hatred cannot be confronted with hatred. Segregation and intolerance cannot be reciprocated the same way. The true Kingdom principle is what Christ commanded us... "love your enemies, bless those who curse you, pray for those who persecute you and forgive!" Lord, help me to live this way and overcome what I feel.

I think of her parents and how brave they were! They sent her little daughter to school, knowing the others will reject her; they trusted on her and raised a kind and mature woman. As a parent, sometimes, I feel discouraged to let my kids participate in events or go to places because I do not want them to feel discriminated. Her interview made me think about the wrong idea I to stay in our bubbles; this makes things harder; just brave people enter in other bubbles and make space for diversity and inclusion.

That is so sad, and her heart is so full and beautiful that she never even felt hate against the racists.
