As a former Greyhound bus driver, i could totally understand the bus driver situation because I had to get up out of my bed when they called me on my off days from work with my wife and daughter and I would be cranky because I had to drive from Cincinnati, OH up to Pittsburgh, PA to drive a bus up to New York City which was a headache when i had some rude passengers that would be very pissed at me when they had to wait 4 hour delayed at Pittsburgh. Some people don't understand that Greyhound bus driver goes through a lot of stress at this company because they don't pay us that well and we have to figure out the map and schedule because we don't know it by heart. We go through a lot of stuff with passengers, our supervisors and other employees as well. I had to kick off some disrespectful passengers too. I could admit that you have some rude bus driver and rude passengers too. I could totally understand some of y'all transit bus drivers situation as well because y'all driving in the cities, good and bad neighborhoods, we have to drive long time driving from towns, gas stations and everywhere. My friend quit his Greyhound bus driving when i left the company. That is my experience as a former employee of that company.

Me and my hubsand would pray that y'all bus operators are safe out there because y'all don't deserved the mistreatment from the public. God bless everyone.

Where I worked we were NOT required to board or allow to remain on board anyone who was violent, disorderly or unseemly in action or speech...if you swear at the driver YOU'RE OFF!

As a transit bus driver myself, we go through the good and bad neighborhoods in the Metro Cities. I learn to be as positive as much as possible on the job because it's good and bad everywhere. I help a couple of passengers who was deaf when i was working, i was speaking ASL with a few people. I would definitely add this to my resume for other jobs including learning different languages once i learn them. It took me some time to understand ASL but i got it. WOW! I cannot believe the driver failed and went all in on that bad turn? As someone who rode Greyhound and Trailways buses across country, I was always amazed at how skilled the drivers were and how good the buses looked. No dents, scratches, mis-matched body panels. Now I understand why Greyhounds equipment looks like crap!

I remember I had to make a REALLY tight left turn onto a two lane road and the car was right at the white line. Not much room to set myself up. Kept one eye on the left rear corner and the other on the right side mirror because there was a pole on the corner. The car in the turning lane honked at me because he was so scared I would hit him. Back end came around with room to spare. Listen, I make it look easy, but it aint easy.

I saw a man park his car in the bus stop to go into a restaurant. The driver was obviously stressed out. We did not get the full story but she was rude to say I don't care. I hope Greyhound understands and does not fire her. Passengers rarely understand.

Last time, I was trying to get through the space between a parked bus and a parked car. It was taking place at the bus depot with some co-workers as spectators. I decided to give up, turn back and go to the destination by another way. One of the old experienced mate started to critique my decision... personally, I would rather be safe than be sorry. BTW, I am a bus driving license holder for 3 months.

Yes, you can 1000% kick people off the bus for reasons this driver did. When I make my announcements, I go over the rules and what will happen if you break the rules I’ll give them some reminders, other rules is immediate removal. It’s not often that I have to remove people, but I have never felt bad when I had too because they weren’t following the rules. Guess that’s an advantage of driving at a a privately owned bus line 😂.

A year ago a black lady who was the Greyhound Bus driver started yelling and cursing and threatening me because I asked her if the bus stopped in Toledo. It was so unprofessional. A year earlier a guy was stabbed in the filthy Chicago bus station. There were some foreign students riding from Chicago to Detroit and the bus driver cussed them out because they were the last to get on the bus. The bus was scheduled to leave at 45 minutes past the hour. It was 42 minutes past the hour. They could barely speak English and the driver was making fun of their accent and asserting that it was HIS bus and not theirs. My mother took the bus from Ohio to Tennessee and the bus literally never came. No warning no explanation. We had to drive an hour an a half back to the bus station to pick her up. One time the bus driver gave about 50% of the passengers assigned seats and told the other passengers to just sit where they wanted to. The result was of course chaos and it ended in a near fistfight. The driver called the police and had one of the fighters removed. Once we got on the road there was another assault and the bus had to pull over to wait for the police to come remove the lady who was the aggressor. I could go on and on. I really hate Greyhound. I don't think there exists a company in America that is worse. It's a shame.

Greyhound must have the upmost WORST management running that company.

Now I was an operator for Greyhound for about a year and once I was about a few months in, I was kicking at least a passenger or two off the bus either during the route or before they even got on the bus. That happens at least once a month for me. And in this situation where the driver wasn't informed on the particular schedule I've been in that situation too when I was leaving Richmond VA heading to Jacksonville NC as my last stop. The manager in Raleigh had put three passengers on my bus that was heading to Wilmington NC I didn't know that until I took their tickets and saw that they were going to Wilmington NC, was I upset yes, was I irritated about it yes indeed I was. Because that wasn't in plan also it wasn't attached to my scheduled route. But I had to take them there I got them there safely and drove the bus back to my ending terminus which was Jacksonville NC.

It’s been awhile since I have taken the GH, but back in the day when I was a youth, I traveled many miles on “da dog” as a rider. I have seen Greyhound drivers remove passengers from the bus. From my experience, GH drivers have wide latitude rejecting disruptive passengers. Another outstanding vid, Keywan!

I tend to find from the limited video footage and not knowing the full story from this situation. I am sure the bus driver has a valid reason to refuse service to that passenger and she has every right to refuse service to a customer if they are being abusive or a risk to other travelers. I used to work on the railway and I really hated dealing with rowdy drunks or junkies. I would always do my best to handle the situation in a calm and collected way.

The whole Greyhound environment is downright messed up! I feel bad for those passengers at least here in the USA who have to use this method as the only super affordable way to travel. Back in 2019, I rode the bus cross-country and at least 60% of my time on Greyhound many of the members there are rude. Only that 40% of people there can still be found who are professional and courteous.

See, as a bus operator, this is a worst thing that can happen is when you have a passenger or people recording you with their phones and doing something in that video that could get you in trouble where your job could be at risk. This is why I prefer to be quiet and if I'm running late, then I would just apologize to the passengers at best because I rather diffuse a situation then to escalate it with any passengers. I had a few case scenarios where people have interacted with me while I operated my bus. When they take their frustrations out towards me, I would apologize, give them a transfer, etc. Anything to diffuse the situation as I'm not getting paid to get into any argument or fights with anyone and that could lead to other things where my own safety can be in jeopardy. What that operator did, she should've remained calmed and not yell or escalating anything with any passengers because nowadays, theirs not only cameras on the bus, but people are carrying phones and they'll record you and put you out there. So, if any of those passengers file a complaint and there's a video of you acting a fool out there or whatever to support that complaint, that complaint is going to be backed up with that video. Then your job is going to be at risk. That's why I say its not worth getting into any arguments or situations with the passengers because nowadays, everything is being recorded. Best thign to do to protect yourself and protect your job is to remain courteous and just think about the money your making at the end of the day.

The bus operator is frustrated and stressed. Running late doesn't help either but everyone of us bus operators know we will be late. I'm not sure what Greyhounds policies are as far as taking a break but I would be taking the time to walk somewhere to get something to eat and relax a bit. We'll be later but I need to get my nerves back on a level where I can make it safe to drive my bus down the street. Never argue with passengers or customers in general. The more you argue, the more gasoline you're putting in the fire. Gas lightning they would call it? Remain calm and answer in the most kind way possible. If they get out of hand, stay silent and let them run their mouth. At a point, they will cool down. This method works for me a lot even being threatened. 4 years in as a operator so far. Like Bus Driver Life mentioned, if you're getting too close to a vehicle or object, stop that bus. I rather be stuck than be involved in a collision. That's paperwork, damages the company has to pay to repair such damages and you will become the liability. Stop and call a supervisor or coworker for assistance. Can a Greyhound operator actually keep someone from riding on a bus? 🤔

My company is not allowed to deny a student. We can do temporary suspensions but we cannot completely ban or even kick a passenger off the wagon

I will have to say that in this case the bus driver should be more understanding and should show compaction. To a passenger being told one thing and the fact that the bus company not informing the driver is totally wrong. From what I am seeing, the driver is butthurt and thus is trying to deny this lady a ride. If I had seen the lady threatening the driver that would have changed the situation. Plus my opinion of Greyhound is that they could provide much better service I have ridden them in the past before needing to use a wheelchair and they are a very low-class service, to begin with.

The more you argue with someone, the deeper you dig yourself in. If a passenger had a complaint, I told them to call customer service, & if they wanted to pursue it I said "here's my driver number, the bus number is XXXX, the time is XX< usually once you call their bluff nothing ever transpired. Remember, you're on DVR and I point that out to them that what ever (we) say or do is being recorded, (make sure you're within the camera range) If they wanted to pursue it even further, let them know you're calling dispatch/security & the issue WILL be resolved, it all takes about 30 seconds. Even if the DVR isn't working, they don't know, let the camera work for you. Sometimes, I told them "I'll give you 2 options, either you get off the bus on your own, or I could have you escorted off", but only if it comes to that. 99.99% of the time, nothing ever transpired. In the 16 years I drove transit, I could count on 1 hand incident reports I had to file. Just saying.

Yes. Yes. And No. Certain personalities cannot deal well with conflict. If you were not informed, don't put yourself into the middle of the argument. Tell passengers to complain at the ticket 😊window, not the steering wheel.

I should point out where the bus hit the car at the time you see the back of the bus you also see wat is on the left side that is important. A low wall dumpster. You can also see this is a narrow one lane road not counting curbside space. One lane roads in NYC are annoying for cars and worse for buses. Angle of the bus plus the dumpster shows she was trying more not to hit the dumpster and did not have enough room to pull out from the curb. Navigating narrow roads is a problem for any bus. I know an intersection in my borough where it is not a normal cross type instead if you heading on the East-West road, you have to make a left then a right on narrow road space while avoiding parked cars. They had to add signs banning parking in certain spots at the intersection just so buses going East-West do not hit parked cars and they still barely miss. I have no idea why a bus was even on such a narrow road. NYC has made efforts over decades to modify spots where buses go on narrow roads so a bus has enough room to pull away from a curb to avoid this but they do that mainly for city buses, not as much for other services like Greyhound.

People should just pay the extra $50 and take Amtrak. The amount of stress and delays isn’t worth it.

I’ve driven both for greyhound and a couple different transit agencies and can say there is a couple differences between Greyhound and any city transit. First of course is the distance traveled. A lot of times in Greyhound you are following either Google maps or if they still have it (I know they were piloting it) a very crappy trucking GPS so you typically don’t know your way every which way unless you are a native of the area or that is your regular run. The driver in the first vid was probably either told to go that way and didn’t want to get lost (for those that don’t know both vids are in NYC) or was simply following GPS and it took him that way. Now yes as a professional he was suppose to size up that turn and it’s clear he/she didn’t but there were also a lot of variables in this turn such as the car to the left and the scaffolding. The best thing to do was simply go a couple streets down (NYC is full of one ways) or simply stop get out look and back out of this. The lady on the second video I understand where she is coming from. If I’m not mistaken she is an extra board operator (for those that don’t know she’s an extra driver). Typically greyhound drivers are called no less than 2 hours and no more than 24 hours for a run (even if it’s late). This rule applies also with DOT HOS laws as well so if you haven’t gotten rest then they can’t call until you are “fresh”. Typically when dispatchers call they only worry about the piece of work that is covered by their region and usually the driver have to either know the work or ask certain questions (is there a second piece of work, do I turn a piece of work around etc). It’s very plausible that she didn’t know about the run from NYC to Atlantic City until a supervisor in New York actually told her. So I understand her frustration completely because she was expecting to end in New York. I also understand the passenger prospective because they paid for a service that they felt as if it should have been there. However this is also when common sense comes into play. I’ve referred people in New York back to customer service to get a refund and told them about different services to Atlantic City (such as New Jersey transit). In this case from my own knowledge the driver was probably fed up because of the way the passenger came at her about the situation and lashed back. Is it right no however we are all human. Yes she was very much within her boundaries to refuse boarding because of the hostility from the passenger. No one is leaving the safety of the station (Port Authority Bus Terminal has its own police station inside and typically also has national guard there as well) to hit the highway alone with anyone hostile.

From Greyhound's origin to the late 1970's this "bus driver" would not have been qualified to be a restroom cleaner, FlixBus, Greyhound's owners, have decimated this once great company.

I can see what just about all bus drivers feel. This is becomes management who is supposed to be telling the bus drivers about changes in schedule. I am not sure if it's too much Internet nonsense that management feels too uncomfortable addressing at the barns or what. It is really the management's job to make sure that the drivers are informed of each service change. What I learned that most of the time before a service change is about to take effect, there is what is called a "run pick" where the drivers pick if they want to keep the same run and route. Now if upper management doesn't do their fair share, it is no wonder the drivers get cross and the public is being stuck with the short end of the stick.

Alright, so from her point of view. I understand the argument from the operator. She had to “cushion” or commute from DC to NYC to cover the run. Many times Greyhound just calls and say, “Hey, I need you to go and ride the bus to DC, Atlanta, Etc..” and you’ll get more details en route”. That’s GREYHOUND for y’all. And once you get to where they send you. That’s where they tell you. “Get on this bus and pull this schedule to XYZ city.” She more than likely was advised last minute, the schedule was already late, the people don’t get timely reply. They get mad. It’s understandable. But also they have to understand, that it’s not the individual’s drivers fault. This is a very common practice at greyhound.

It pissed me of most of the time when i see parked car at the side of the road. It is very furstrating for the bus driver to turn right or left within that small space. Why people park their car on side of the road in the first place? It is not safe at all. There is almost no space for bus driver when they make a turn between right road side parked car and the left yellow line which is for the car to turn rihgt or left. I am a passenger and it will pissed me of most of the time. Narrow road with congested traffic and blaming the bus driver for their fault are terreble thing that i have seen in my trip most of the time.They have to solve a such kind of preventable problems instead of yelling on the bus driver.In general, what i like to say is fixing the problems is mandatory before putting all blames on bus the driver.

All I'm going to say, I feel bad for anyone who has to ride Greyhound and for those who have to drive for them. The Greyhound that many of the old heads talk about died in 1983 and 1990 respectively, especially once John Teets and Fred Curry did the damage they did to the company. What's masquerading as Greyhound today is dog that's badly abused and beaten. Flix has only exacerbated the problems the bus company had with bus terminal closures. The prices are cheaper yes, but as they say, you get what you pay for when you go cheap.

The bus driver has the right to refuse transportation to anybody for any reason. As long as it doesn't validate the civil disabilities and other words of you're rude. You could be removed from the bus bottom line and as a bus driver. You already know they're not saying it. But you know this you're a bus driver And so am I

Too be fair Greyhound has always been the choice of last resort. Some of the clientele don't exactly help driver mood. Plus dipshit parking from the public in their self centred me first cars who believe they have a god given right to park anywhere doesn't help. In Kernow we have a law that all bus stops are no stopping zones for anything except scheduled bus services (and selected permitted other services like elderly daycare and school buses) We have a fairly relaxed approach in my parish. We don't ticket drivers but ask them to move when the bus comes. Most people oblige. Though Tourists and migrants from the Midlands rarely oblige. The rudeness of the English! Incedently how do you feel about the screens and cameras replacing mirrors on some Eurasian buses and Coaches. So you can see what's going on from the seat. More distraction or easier?
