Standing 7.6m high this standing stone is the tallest megalithic stone in the UK, hence its name ! Probably of Pagan origin and is made of Grit Stone, weighs about 40 metric Tonnes and is from approx 1600bc. The Stone is thought to of come from the coast somewhere near to Scarborough. Some accounts suggest it maybe planted as deep as it is high ! One huge stone whatever depth its at especially from ancient people without the technology we have , and a credit to those who erected it that it has stood (!) the test of time.
Situated in the East Riding of Yorkshire northeast of Driffield in the graveyard of All Saints Church, near Bridlington, it makes a worthy stop off if driving by , as does the medieval deserted village of Wharram Percy not so far away.
