CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In the final play of the final game, Rudy (Sean Astin) is given the chance to compete and sacks the quarterback.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A young man learns to let nothing stop him from realizing his ambitions in this drama, based on a true story. Ever since he was a little boy, Rudy Ruettiger (Sean Astin) has dreamed of attending Notre Dame University, and playing on the Fighting Irish football team. However, Rudy's dream doesn't seem very practical; Daniel (Ned Beatty), his father, works in a steel mill and can ill afford to send his son to Notre Dame, while Rudy's grades are not especially impressive, and standing a shade over five feet tall and weighing a little over 100 pounds, Rudy is hardly built for the gridiron. However, with the help of Father Cavanaugh (Robert Prosky), a sympathetic priest, Rudy is admitted to nearby Holy Cross, and in his junior year manages to squeak into Notre Dame as a transfer student. Rudy works as an assistant to the football stadium's groundskeeper, Fortune (Charles S. Dutton), to pay his tuition (often sleeping in Fortune's office since he can't afford a room), studies diligently, and appears at tryouts for the football team. Rudy is made a member of the practice team, which means he's little more than a human tackling dummy, but Coach Ara Parseghian (Jason Miller) is impressed with Rudy's devotion and determination, and pledges that he'll allow him to dress for one game before he graduates, so his name can be recorded as an official member of the team. However, the arrival of a new coach and a tough season that allows for few unnecessary players may put a stop to Rudy's dreams within sight of the finish line. Rudy also stars Jon Favreau, Lili Taylor, and Scott Benjaminson.

My Dad played football with Rudy at Notre Dame, this was my favorite movie to watch with him the end always got him. He wore 55 so every time I see his number In the movie I would always say “Look Dad there you are.” Greatest man I ever knew I miss him everyday.

The only bad part of this movie is they portrayed head coach Dan Devine as the bad guy who was against Rudy playing. In reality he was the one who had Rudy suit up for the game and he was the one who put him in for the last three plays of the game. It's a shame he had to live this down after the movie because he was actually the good guy in all this.

Yeah, I heard the scene where the players put their jerseys on his desk didn't happen. But nonetheless, the story is still inspiring.
@DivineSimply
@DivineSimply 6 жыл бұрын
That's correct. And, lol, after the movie came out, Devine called Rudy while he was being interviewed on some radio show and told him that any player of his who ever put a jersey on his desk would have seen the last of it.
@beastywvu4523
@beastywvu4523 6 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree with you more. Coach Devine actually gave an interview years later and was really hurt by how he was portrayed in the movie. He said the jersey scene was "unforgivable. It's a lie and untrue." The movie made for great cinema, but is completely over dramatized.

Fortune is such a great character. He has regretted his own decision to quit the team his entire life. Fortune sees himself in Rudy and helps him out the best he can. When Rudy actually gets to play, Fortune's lifetime of regrets are put to rest and he now has peace of mind. Fortune literally punches his demons as he walks away. Great story

For anyone that's ever laced em up and been a part of a team under those Friday night lights, you know EXACTLY what this moment would feel like. The culmination of hard work, perseverance, and the refusal to let anyone that's ever doubted you get the chance to say "I told you so", coming together in one defining moment. And the power of this message extends so much further than just the football field as well, we've all had or encountered a Rudy moment at some point in our lives. This scene is a testament to how much control we all truly have over the goals we set for ourselves, and just how powerful the belief in oneself can take you with the right mindset. All throughout life, there are always going to be people that tell you you "can't" do something, or your not "good" enough, but in the end they're just opinions, and opinions will NEVER have a direct impact of whether you accomplish your goal or not. That's up to you and only you. Also if you don't at least cry a little bit at the end of this scene, you're not a real man.

Not under the bright lights, but I have felt the floor under my roller skates in my first ever roller derby bout. I've also felt the wind in my hair as my coach swung me around after the winning hit in softball. Sports is such an amazing feeling. The power of your teams roar as they scream for victory and support. It's a feeling you can't describe with words, but only the tears and goose bumps that rise from your skin. The high you get and the victory in your heart. Nothing greater than that feeling....except the birth of your children ;)

This movie was the greatest inspiration of my life. Furman University was my dream school. I wasn’t the brightest student, and I wasn’t the greatest ball player. Just an average offensive lineman with a big dream. I never ever imagined I would get there, but goddamnit I did. I was accepted, I walked on for the ball team. To be honest, I never did actually dress for a game, and I transferred to a smaller school after my first year, because I just decided I wanted different things out of life at a different school. But I went further than anybody ever thought I could and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Thanks Rudy

I cry every time I watch this film or this clip. Some ND alum have tried to pour cold water on this story talking about inaccuracies etc, but the point is a mediocre student from humble beginnings got a degree from one of the finest universities in the country and actually played for what was at the time the greatest football program in the nation. I guess they missed the point about perseverance and not letting anyone tell you that you can’t succeed, and that dedication and hard work pay off. Whatever has transpired since this film with Rudy’s life will never take away from the fact that he lived his dream. He will always be an inspirational person imho.

Problem I have is, I swear the real triumph of the movie isn't in the clip list. (Rudy's dad looks at the letter. And up.) "I did it." "You did it. Hey guys... my son's going to Notre Dame. ... (Gets on the PA) *MY SON'S GOING TO NOTRE DAME!*"

This movie has it all. A young man who is told he can’t but overcomes all to achieve his dream. His faith carries him and lifts him up when he struggles and falls. Yet he gets up time and time again to continue on. A true inspiration to us all. I can be scrolling thru the tv lineup and if I see Rudy is on it’s a MUST watch!

The tackle blocking Rudy totally got caught in the moment and let him through. No.72 for Georgia Tech is the real hero in all of this. In reality he could have knocked Rudy on his ass and made this film none existent. Instead he let 5'6 Samwise through to make a sack because he's a good man. If anybody deserves a movie about their life it's no. 72 for Georgia Tech. Well done sir. I admire you for your humbleness in letting Rudy make that sack. You're a good man and one day I hope you get the recognition you deserve.

I had heard from a friend of mine up in Johnstown, Pa., where I'm originally from, was that Ara Parseghian had originally told Rudy that he would play him in his final game as a senior in 1975. However, Ara retired as Notre Dame's football coach after the 1974 season. During the transition from Ara to Dan Devine, he told Dan about the promise he made to Rudy and asked him to honor it. Dan readily agreed.
