Watching you scramble this thing up the trail was way more entertaining than a lot of the more technical stuff with the more capable rigs. Sometimes it's all about the struggle & overcoming obstacles that gets that lil endorphin hit going

Yeah, it makes me laugh, people in twin locked, big shit grippers, mega flex suspension rigs whinging that trails aren't challenging. Try doing it in a less capable rig if you want a challenge. As I say, if you ain't got the kit, then you better have the driving skillset.👍🏻

I agree. Anybody can spend 40k on a off-road monster of a jeep. But it takes a real skilled driver to take their $600 2wd Commanche up a trail rated for 4wd vehicles.

A locker and good tires can go a surprisingly far way on a 2wd, particularly with some weight moved to the back. Years ago, there was a Comanchee Eliminator 2wd in our trail group with a 2" lift, rear locker, mud T/A's on the back, and All Terrains on the front. Skid plates and velocity got it through most trails and only heavy mud really was an absolute no-go. At first, I thought this might turn into a slammed, super-stretch 3/4 scale Jeep version of Rudy's dream truck, but now I'm thinking he's going to take this in another direction. Whatever he does, I think it will be a very cool build to watch!
@Duc-sl7rz
@Duc-sl7rz Жыл бұрын
Was about to mention the same thing. A manual locker or a Detroit can make a 2WD truck a formidable machine off-road, so long as you've got hard packed dirt or rock for your tires to hold on to.

I`m aware of the weight helping in snow. I guess weight isn`t an advantage in hill climbing and the weight is shifted on the wheels for traction anyway.

The Comanche is exactly the type of vehicle you and your dad rescue in the middle of the night - two-wheel drive, under-powered and under-equipped. So many newbs find themselves on a road that "suddenly" gets gnarly and it's too late to turn back. Can't wait to see what you do with the Comanche. Yeeee hah!!

I think the Comanche would be a nice build. Make it 4 wheel drive, a roll cage, winch(s), lifted bigger tires, new interior, and maybe make it into a tow truck since it is a truck, the bed is just asking for something.

Yeah, as long as you're within the physics and geometry capability of the vehicle, 90% of wheeling is the driver. Unskilled drivers can get the most capable vehicle stuck (or worse), but a skilled driver can get a fairly basic vehicle to some amazing places. Rudy is clearly skilled.

@@mahbriggs mine was a 1977 Plymouth Arrow ( Mitsubishi Lancer in Japan ) and my buddy and I got some 4x4ers going at a party one night, we were laughing at them over this little hill that they were driving up and down to show off. My buddy had a front wheel drive Subaru hatchback and I had the Arrow, we took off almost bumper to bumper, went up the hill, he just punched it to spin around, while I played with the e-brake to shorten the turn, and we both flew back down the hill, spun around and repeated the same thing. Then they understood why we were laughing, the low center of gravity and short wheel base makes a difference.

Leave it 2WD! I've driven 2WD Rangers for years year-round in New England and a limited-slip rear and the right tires get me where I need to go. That Comanche is would be a great parts runner that you can still have fun with. A 2nd generation Ford Explorer 8.8 rear end would be a good junkyard swap to get rear discs, LSD, and 4.10 R&P with a matching lug pattern.
