Who could've guessed that a combination of Mathieu Raynal as referee and Ben Whitehouse as TMO, can be this bad. Let's get the first 20 minutes out of the way, no team deserves to win a game by playing that bad in the first 20 minutes. The All Blacks destroyed us, and made us look like kids. Shannon Frizell absolutely ran over us and made us pay at the breakdown. It's been a while since a Springbok team got overpowered like that. That said, the boks came back and didn't give up. There were moments where we had the momentum and where we started getting into rhythm but then we made stupid mistakes at times we couldn't afford to make them. So I know already people are going to talk about this being an excuse, when you lose 35-20, or when you're 17-0 down in the first 20 mins. No matter how good or bad the ref was, that is on you.
But yeah, now let's focus on the officiating, because it was terrible. The main talking is obviously the Cheslin Kolbe try that got disallowed by Ben Whitehouse. It has to be one of the worst TMO decisions I've seen in rugby. When a TMO has clear evidence of grounding and a player whose hands are pressing downwards and touching the ball as the ball is touching the ground, and then he still manages to screw it all up by saying Kolbe's hand was never pressing down. How on earth is Ben Whitehouse a World Cup TMO if he can't even get that right? I knew he was a bad ref in the URC, but he is starting to become the Welsh Marius Jonker. His logic when making decision is absurd. Then you have him not even reviewing the questionable passes on the other Kolbe try and the Frizell try. Then there is him getting involved and spotting a neck roll from Lood de Jager, but after that he simply ignores all the other dangerous neck rolls and cleanouts. What was he doing?
Then we have Mathieu Raynal who was just as bad. The Springboks simply had no chance at lineout because Raynal didn't apply the laws. The All Blacks were offside and standing on the Mark of Touch on almost every single lineout, and he called it once, then just never does it again. Then there is the the incidents where the All Blacks are pre-binding onto the Springbok Lineout whilst the jumpers are in the air. Not to mention the Marx try where 2 of the New Zealand player were cynically collapsing the mall 1 meter from the try line, yet they didn't even get a warning. Then there is just inconsistent calls all round with the breakdown and scrums. he had no control whatsoever. The best had to be when South Africa gets scrum advantage, we run 20 meters, which he never calls advantage over, then at the ruck, Lood de Jager, cleans out an All Blacks player, completely from the side and off the ball. Then Sam Cane comes from the side of the ruck, completely offside, goes headfirst into the back of the head of Faf de Klerk, and takes him out, all the while Eben Etzebeth has Ardie Savea in a headlock. And the ref manages to miss every single infringement and also ends up not giving the Springboks any advantage for the scrum. It was an absolute joke.
At the end of the day, the All Blacks win us regardless of who was the ref. But boy, this game is making me extremely worried about the World Cup. Of this is the best that World Rugby has to offer, then we're in for a wild ride at the World Cup.

It is important that a ref should be analyzed after each Rugby game, doesn't matter at what level is being played. This will also serve as a barometer and points the errors made. World Rugby should make this a must, this can only enhance the game of Rugby and how it is played or suppose to be played taken the laws into account.

and it would put these refs in the spotlight calling out their GOOD AND BAD calls. I am an AB fan and can only stare in amazement that this "ref" imo showed either bias or a laziness in his job. Rugby is an amazing sport BUT it MUST be fair and called fair at all times imo.

How about everyone grab a whistle and become a referee? Especially TAS. People aren't signing up to become a ref because of all the hate and threats. Who are you going to replace referees with if you sack them or 'hold them accountable'? Honest question. It's easy to criticise, but if there aren't many to choose from then what do you do? It's the hardest position in rugby and without them, we wouldn't have the game.

@@AshboNZ86 You have a valid point however, there must be accountability from all involved. There are always solutions, where I absolutely agree is that this is a very difficult job, these critics should not be about dismissing the ref but helping them improve, unfortunately we live in a world that has become so woke that no one is awake to truth anymore, The issue with virtue signalling is that it diminishes acts of virtue which are not always easy to swallow.

Factually speaking, ABs won back to back 2011 & 2015, so going in as favorites isn’t unusual. 2019, being reigning champs, obviously puts them as favorites and yes, the wheels fell off against England, although still the only team to beat the boks. ‘Wheels fall off’. They’ve won the World Cup 3 times……as many as anyone. The only reason SA won in 2019 is because of your easy draw, playing an easy quarter and semifinal all because you lost to the ABs in the pool stage. If NZ had thrown that game they’d probably have won the final. In 1995 you won at home after poisoning your opposition.

Im a springbok fan so still hurting, but, although your ref analysis is often correct, there is one thing that's missed. Rugby is a game played with a certain flow to it and if you want robotic refs who call every single issue after the TMO live checks everything the game will be so stop start that i think it will lose its beauty. I believe we need to understand that refs are going to make some bad calls. What I don't really like is when the TMO gets involved and even he gets in wrong or when a ref calls inconsistently. The AB's just outplayed the boks in the first 20. this game wasn't won or lost due to dodgy refereeing calls.

Here is a question for all: If you are a player/coach.....do you apply the following - win at all costs, in other words, break/bend the rules to your benefit (regardless how small the margin your team benefits) until you get penalised or reprimanded...and win, or strictly stick to the rules and lose... Before anyone shits their pants, this applies to any match and any team in the history of rugby. Just curious as to the mindset. No one likes losing, be it fair or unfair...the question is, would you rather win knowing it wasnt deserved or lose knowing at least you did so honestly?

2nd half where boks changed their line speed to shut down abs forward momentum.. you can see the boks clearly offside. There were about 3 or 4 occasions and yet only 1 seem to be called. bok was leaning on the back of his fellow bok at the back of a ruck. Forcing everyone who is a step in front of the d line before the ball was out, offside. Blatant for sure. Yet you didn't even manage to catch any of them.

Trust me there were 4-5 times the All Blacks were miles offside, like with all the Lineouts, that they didn't get called. Point being, the ref was terrible. Regarding all the offsides, Once I have the Wide angle, I can make a video on that because you see everything. With the broadcast angle it's almost impossible to spot offsides, unless it's next to the rucks. And even in those obvious cases, a lot of offsides were missed. So it's not a case of me just leaving it out. The video would be over 16 mins if I show all the offsides.

But I will say ABs momentum and pace in the first 15/20 minutes just blew us away and we didn't have a response until the second half. And even though we scored more in the 2nd half than they did we were too far behind for it to matter. But it is good we go into the RWC format somewhat humbled. It gives us a reality check and we can then figure out how to do better. It is also no surprise why ABs haven't lost in that venue since 1937. It was clear to me why that is the case. It's easy to pick apart the referee's game when you got 20 cameras pointed from different angles at the whole field after the game has ended. But the ref's only got two eyes to work with live and if he wasn't sure about something then other eyes could help him out if he missed something.

This analysis is fascinating and a useful tool but it can only go so far. As a referee for 15 years (some Men’s/Women’s university/college, some Div 2 Men’s and lots of high school boys), I can tell you that some Law is broken at almost every ruck, scrum and lineout. If you taped every senior referee’s game and laid this analytical ruler over the officiating, in varying degrees you’re going to get the same retinue of missed/incorrect calls. Every experienced referee strives to officiate the preponderance of seriousness of incidents and offending. If you blew the whistle for every tiny infringement, it would be a nightmare of constant stoppages. Assume this refereeing team officiated every single one of these issues, everyone including losing South African fans, would say what an awful game. Good refs strive for consistency trying hard to apply an even hand to how deep in to the Laws you dig to manage the game. If consistent trends emerge in a ref’s performance (in this instance Raynal consistently missed AB infringements into the space in the lineout) then post match film can help address these. BUT, and this is a big but, referees must manage partisan emotions of players, coaches and fans and, knowing that there is no such thing as a perfect ref, and that every ref in every game is going to make some mistakes, partisans always zero in on that one mistake that affects them at a phase if the game they deemed critical and hit you up about it after the game. To me, the issue is always the materiality of the decision-did it affect the outcome of the game, was it it a absolute howler of a mistake or was it one of those things with a 50-50 call like was it a forward pass (the most frequently contested decision by players)?
@tasanalytics
@tasanalytics 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the insightful comment. My issue with Raynal and the lineout was this, at the start of the game he gave a free kick to South Africa because of NZ moving away from the Mark of Touch. So that would suggest he knew about the law, but he just seemingly forgot about it the rest of the game. I could understand if he didn't call out NZ in the first lineout, because maybe the law was just not in the back of the head. Which would make sense because it's one of those small things that I could easily see a ref forgetting about it in a game. That is also where responsability lies on South Africa's coaches to inform their players about it so that they can tell the ref. But again, he did give SA a free kick when NZ did this and just forgot about it the whole game. And then I obviously agree with the consistency stuff you mentioned, like the neck roll of SA on the NZ player right before half time, it was definitely a neck roll and the TMO came in to help the ref. But then throughout the game we see multiple neck rolls (from both teams) and then we hear nothing from the TMO. So it was frustrating. And again, South Africa lost that game in the first 20 minutes of the game, we have only ourselves to blame for that. But doesn't mean I can't point out the inconsistency of the ref. Even if the ref was perfect, SA loses that game, we were outplayed in the first 20mins, it's that simple.

@@tasanalytics We all know that World Rugby have their ‘pet’ referees who stay on the international test panel for regional balancing and internal rugby political reasons and some are past their use by date or others were elevated above their competency. Raynal’s shortcomings have been on display for a while. Part of an international coach’s role is to prepare his team for the opposition on a particular day and part of the due diligence process is researching the ref and his weaknesses and Law biases thus coaching his team to pay to THAT ref. NZ are masters at this process of playing to the ref. The ABs exploited Raynal’s weakness - cynical I know but that’s the modern game I’m afraid. Materiality is also important in analyzing his poor lineout policing. More advantage should have been given to SA and if it were me, repeated infringements leads to a card warning then to the pocket which normally arrests the offending. Assuming he did what I said, how much would it have affected the outcome of the game? Ditto the neck rolls missed on Black players. Sometimes when you have an inconsistent referee all you can hope for is that he’s evenly inconsistent. One would hope that an analysis site like yours is viewed by referee coaches, and will assist in the preponderance of a particular aspect of a referee’s performance that really needs to be addressed. That I think it’s the usefulness here, rather than having a niggle about every tiny little infringement that was missed.

I think the 4 extra penalties we got were in that first 20 mins when SA was still waking up from being shell shocked. Clear daylight on the Kolbe try on the right side of the ball which means separation. I thought number 6 Smith got away with a lot of being offside and coming through the side on rucks, still a hell of a game from him though. Fafs line speed on defence was a bit questionable. ABs went away from being creative which allowed SA to find a groove again. Great game. Good luck for the WC.

Kolbe's try was a no try. The Grounding was all goods but as it leaves Barrett's hands he hits it with his left hand that's why it falls fast 1:00. At 2:11 isn't SA 5 also tackling AB 6 past the ruck? All Blacks got penalized twice for holding on but the first time SA didn't release and second time the tackling player didn't roll away. 8:29 wasn't a cheap shot as it was AB ball and SA 6 was still trying to play. Jordans pass was backwards out of the hands. Referee was too busy with his cramp to check Le Roux pass but it was 50 / 50. SA 10 should of been penalized for not releasing at 9:17. 9:46 is a tough call as Kolbe drops into it. Everything else is pretty much correct.

If what you're pointing out at 1:00, is the ball moving from Kolbe's hand, then it's irrelevant because it goes towards South Africa's touch line, meaning, it wasn't a knock on in the first place. At the very worst, it's straight down. We can take it a step further. The ref was asking for clear separation when Kolbe pushes his hand downward, from those angles, there was no conclusive evidence of separation. And then to add on to that, the TMO clearly said, he wants to see if Kolbe is pressing downwards. Now I have no idea how anybody can argue that Kolbe wasn't pressing downward. His hands is clearly pushing downward as he grounds the ball. SO the TMO literally shows himself the angle where Kolbe is pressing down. Then magically decides that Kolbe didn't press downwards. As for 2:11, I showed in the clip that SA cleans him from the side and off the ball. 8:29, whether it's AB ball or not, you can't play a guy like that off the ball. As for Jordan's pass, the close up replay, it looked sketchy. I will say this, It would probably be on field decision. But it's still concerning that it never was checked. Same with the WIllie pass, the ref's injury is irrelevant at that point since it is the TMO's job to help the ref in cases like that. He does not need the ref's permission to check a try. 9:17, again irrelevant because we're dealing with foul play. You can't drop a guy like that on his head. We're not playing WWE, we're playing rugby. 9:46, he definitely drops into it, but it's still a penalty. I didn't say it should be a yellow card, I doubt a hit like that would be a card. Especially considering Ardie didn't really use high force.

@@tasanalytics yup I did bro and especially in the start of the 2nd half your teams d line was already moving before the player even touched the ball and don't even get me started about the constant hands in the ruck. You could make a video just as long as this for the All Blacks. What does that tell you mate?, if the ref was on point you still would have lost.

@@tasanalytics I was just adding another thing Mathieu missed at that ruck at 2:11. 8:29 SA 6 has to release ball as its a penalty for AB but instead he carried on playing so it was his fault. 9:17 with the camera angles we need a closer look as it looks like his head hits AB 20 body then stops and AB 20 lets him go gently on his head to roll. 9:46 I was just saying it would of been a tough call on Ardie as he couldn't do much and if he lowered his body his shoulder probably would of connected with Kolbe's head but I wouldn't be mad if it was a penalty.

Well one thing is absolutely certain: no chance that Cheslin ever knocked forward. But the verdict was anyway "no downward pressure", which is absolutely ridiculous.

Very informative, more like very biased. Missed de Klerk’s deliberate knock down which should have been a yellow card…………didn’t mention Willie Le Roux’s forward pass to Kolbie, his try should have been disallowed.

Not if you unerstand the laws around forward passes. The ball is allowed to travel forward under the momentum applied by the speed of the player carrying it. It is not allowed to be directed out of the hands toward the goal line. As it was for Kolbe's try.
@maneeshdeva
@maneeshdeva 10 ай бұрын
@theonetruechiron yes- but in slow mo detemining momentum is very uncertain. Esp when a player is being tackled (hence his momentum is immediately halted) and you have to assume what the momentum would have been..

Pretty biased analysis only considering supposed officials decisions against SA. How about looking at the game in total. Excuses like this spoil the spectacle of the game. Boks, don't blame the officials, instead look at your own shortcomings!

What stupid logic that is. So let me get this right, You're not allowed to talk about players if you don't play professionally? Do I understand you correctly? or do we only apply that logic to refs? Always with the excuses for the refs. You do realize coaching and playing is also an incredibly difficult job right?

Awesome do what we can to improve reffing at every level of the game! The disallowed Kolbe try was a very very unlucky call for SA. That 2nd run of play that starts with a SA scrum advantage and goes on to show a side entry clean by SA, a neck roll on Ardie Savea, head on head contact by Sam Cane and finally a turnover and play on call just goes to show what a difficult game to ref it is and how much the players have to put their body on the line GO BLACK 🖤

I’m glad you picked up lineouts and mauls. It’s been like this every game for around 4 years now. I don’t know what the refs are doing and why they can’t see such clear offside joint the mauls and prebinding. Ruining one the greatest assets of the game. Even if there’s no try from the maul direct it ties all forwards in and gives back’s opportunity to attack against a small defence line. They really need to sort it out! Plus all players know this and are actively cheating. It’s pathetic
