Ben Wright is the halfback allowed to join the lineout for that first try? It was a great move just wondering the legality of it

@@abcd1234jason Don't think it was legal, ball hadn't left the lineout, and no ruck or maul. Not sure what I've missed if that is legit. Unless there's been a change to the laws since this.

Alasdair Duncan um? He's standing at halfback before the ball is thrown. If he's not halfback you can't just stand there it's called a "lineout" for a reason

@@abcd1234jason Was number 7 (Hamish Watson) standing in the halfback pos. Rule is not allowed within 2 meters (but usually generous) before ball is thrown. He is about 1.3-1.5 meters when its thrown but would be a harsh call to not allow. Its the same distance the 9 should be when its thrown so it looks about right (but a tad close). Hope that helps :)

One that will live long in my memory is one scored by Rugby Lions against Leeds in '97. There was a huge cross wind. Leeds players were behind the posts as our kicker lined up a shot at goal. Only he wasn't. He used the wind to send it across the pitch to our winger who touched down. You could tell it was planned as the winger was the only player that chased the kick. Plus I must add that I was a ballboy and he said to me to let him keep the tee.

The Stringer try was brilliant not just because of the body position which threw them off but because he was a player who nearly always passed, he didn't tend to go for sniping runs at all. Biarritz wouldn't have been expecting that and teams probably noted his passing mentality in their pre match scouting reports. It was great how he saved that unexpected snipe for the most important match of all (Heineken Cup Final).

I don't think the one who picked the ball up at 3:40 was onside, so I'm calling that one bogus rather than sneaky. He was unbound at the side of the ruck, having gotten into that position while the ruck was in progress, and then picked up the ball when it emerged.

I assume you are referring to rule 12.5b "When the ball is kicked: Opposition players must be on or behind the 10-metre line. Sanction: The kick is retaken." I would interpret that rule as any infringement would be caused by the receiving team, i.e. they are charging down the ball too early and therefore getting an advantage. Furthermore, a winning side could deliberately slow down a game if the kicking team had to wait for them all to return to their half. Therefore, a referee could allow the kicking team to play advantage if the receiving team took too long to return to their half. That seems to be the consensus in referee forums and I suspect that is what has been played in the video. I would, however, be interested to see any evidence to the contrary as it is an interesting rule and the Rugby Laws seem to leave it open to interpretation.
@goodmaro
@goodmaro 4 жыл бұрын
@@OblivionPlays Why would the opposing players be allowed to benefit from being in an illegal position? But what bothers me is that the players of the KICKING side were allowed to benefit from THEIR position ahead of the goal line when the try kick was taken. It bothers me that you can do that on a drop-out too.

Why? He was legally participating in the lineout (as one of the two from each side allowed to participate while not being part of the lineout), the ball left the thrower's hands, and he went to play the ball after it cleared 5m. He doesn't have to stay behind the lineout while the ball is in play.
