In the latest of our new series in conjunction with Front Row Rugby, Peter Stemmet chats to former Springbok Hennie le Roux. Hennie played under three different coaches and talks about how these coaches differed from each other. They also discuss the euphoria of winning the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the dissapointing end to his Springbok career.

There wasn't much said about your headline, Christie vs Mac, it was mentioned that Christie had a personal approach with the players, but have heard that he was either Mr or Coach whereas Mac was Mac. Rugby at that time was Luyt, Transvaal and the majority Transvaal players in the Springbok team were reluctant to buy into Mac's plan. If you check his record the losses were marginal. Possibly the structures and the players didn't give him a fair shake.

Different people will have different opinions and the backs and forwards may have had different experiences. Back then Provincialism was also very rife and we all supported our own way more than we would today. So its no surprise Mark and Hennie backed their own Provincial coaches. Hennie moved from 10 to 12 and Mark moved from 5 to 8 which was a lot more challenging.

Very careful with his comments but I’ll say it as I saw it. Connected frigging idiots chosen as Coaches. You have talent to work with, don’t try teach them the game, work with the strengths you have and implement strategy with buy-in from the players. That’s what makes Rassie such a successful Bok leader. And the provincial favouring displays lack of knowledge and normally leaves you failed results. As indicated by Hennie, its combinations or a lot of practice to combine well. Those same idiots that were threatened by the player association show how poor they are at leadership, bullies in management are a Verkarmte old plass mentality. Great leaders never treat the most valuable part of the business, the players poorly or are jealous that a player is paid better than the admin. Poor coaches, Karel, Strualli, Markgraff and you wonder why we lost so many games, even Mallett threw the respect he built to the wind when he became bigger than the game and took the team leader Teich out of the RWC 1999. Took a long time to kick the Boetiebond out of SA sport but when you look at the current squad, I cannot offer 1 player who does not belong there and the team keeps winning.
