@Mr Right White It's fans like you that give all Kiwi fans a bad name. Two weeks ago, Retallick's injury was blamed on a "cheap shot by RG Snyman" by someone just like you, someone who now believes rugby is a contact sport and injuries are part of the deal. That can't only apply when your team is dishing it out. In this instance, Barrett clearly tucked his arm into his rib cage, turned his shoulder towards the action and used it as a battering ram. I do not believe it was malicious, but the laws don't allow the referee to decide that. The words that the referee used in explaining his definition are the exact criteria needed before red carding a player. Barrett got what he deserved on the field, and now it's up to the citing committee to mete our whatever further punishment they deem necessary. For the record, those are the laws of the game; if you don't like that, then maybe it is not us who should go watch another sport...

It is tough, but with all do respect to Barrett and the fact that there was one mitigating factoe because of Michael Hooper's low body height, he could've taken Hooper ball-and-all or at least not lead with the shoulder/forearm to Hooper's head. In my opinion it was a deserved send off.
@vulturnuszan4 жыл бұрын
some issues here, letter of the law you can easily argue that its a red card. but.. initial contact was not to the head it was to the upper back then slid over the neck and head, the main reason why Hooper was unhurt and didn't even need a HIA, HIA wasn't even requested from the sideline. There is an initial tackler involved which changed the angle of hooper before contact. replays from Scotts left show Scott did actually attempt to wrap his left arm. This all happened well less than three feet off the ground. Barrett got so low his Knee was on the ground. Contacts like this or worse happen more often than they should and they very rarely result in even a penalty. The main factor is a ball carrier going so low and leading with his head where the defender doesn't have access to make contact with the ball, chest, legs or hips. The first point of contact is going to be the head, neck or shoulders. If Rugby is going to get serious about reducing head injuries the next rules have to be on ball carriers. If a ball carrier does not reasonably allow a tackler to make safe contact with the ball, chest hips or legs then the chance of a dangerous contact skyrockets and you have to say that the blaime for dangerous contact becomes less the fault of the defender and more in the ball carriers hands. The majority of unsafe contact now happens either in situations like this where a ball carrier is leading with the head close to the ground making it hard for a defender to make a safe tackle or where a tackler gets their head in the wrong position when attempting to make a tackle.

vulturnuszan but Aus player was already held so shoulder clash was a possibly very dangerous action. If he was free of a tackle, Aus player could bounce off with less risk of neck or head injury. Rugby is getting soft, I understand the need for safety but when the attacking player is so low down it’s mitigating. If a player is stood up and get hit high then a red card should be shown but not when they duck, slip or dive forwards
@tomcleland88794 жыл бұрын
Looking at the incident, I think it would have been difficult to spread the arms to make a tackle in the confines of the maul, also Barratt was only a few metres away and would not have time to get to a full speed. It was clear it was a shoulder charge ,but maybe should have recieved only a minor penalty , maybe yellow card? It certainly benefited the Wallabies, the ref was doing his job, but it was tough.
@Number9s4 жыл бұрын
"I think it would have been difficult to spread the arms to make a tackle in the confines of the maul"; they play at the highest level and they're supposed to be the best for 80+ minutes. They work within the finest margins. In this case, his technique, timing and judgement were wrong so he hit a bloke's head with his shoulder and he paid the price.

I can see this as a Red Card. But earlier in the match the ABs scored and a shoulder charge was made to the kicker but because ABs scored the refs didn't bother to notice or check it. Same story...direct force to shoulder, neck, face and intentional as the ref described this incident. At least deserved a yellow for that offence aswell

Stuff up by Barrett. Did not look good - wasn't good. According to the rules, it was a red card offence, so no problems with it. (NZ supporter by the way.) ABs were struggling even so and probably would not have won. Barrett looked as guilty as hell when he walked away, didn't he? I better make this clear that I meant when he walked away from the ruck, to clear up any confusion. Check it out between seven and ten seconds. As soon as the ref makes the signal for the tmo he knew he was in trouble.

Most rugby fans on here aren’t giving players like Hooper enough credit for their preparation and intellect. Today’s players, especially captains don’t get paid handsomely to sit around doing nothing between matches. Captains and coaches spend hours upon hours of video analysis on the opposition to find the slightest vulnerability in the opp to exploit. Hooper def knew this about Barret so decided to plant the seed in the refs head earlier in the game. When the opportunity arose, Hooper made sure he didn’t miss it by placing his body in just the right position and angling low towards Barrett’s shoulder and yes, right in front of the ref. Barret fell for it hook, line and sinker. Red card?? Possibly...... but Hooper got what he was playing for in that pick and go.

Back in the day, there were no cards, a try was worth 3 points and you were allowed to forcibly remove opposition players from your side of the ruck by jumping on them; you could carry the ball back into your 22 and kick it directly into touch, you could kick the ball over the dead ball line, scrum time was two groups of people collapsing into each other at random, you could not lift in a lineout and the ball was made of leather; international stars travelled by boat and had to take time off work to go and represent their country, for which they were not paid. While the historic games are fun to watch, I prefer the modern game, laws and all...
