Welcome to our first video where we are comparing two budget friendly rifles, both chambered in 308 Winchester, the Ruger American vs the Savage Axis. Using a variety of ammunition, both bullet weight and ammo quality, we show the 4 shot groupings at 100 yards. Both are great options to plink with, hunt with, or begin to refine your long distance shooting while also on a budget.

Thanks for the vid. Constructive ideas: louder on the voiceovers, do an after action with groups circled and labeled with some final thoughts about what you saw. Very hard to pick them out from the corner thumbnail and would be nice to see same groups side by side for both guns at the end.

We've shot the Axis II out to 500yds using 308 and 6.5 creedmoor rifles. Pretty solid starting gun, I wish our groupings better represented their accuracy but first videos are tough lol. I've been wanting a 300blk bolt gun and the Ruger American seems to feel better in my hands than the Savage version.

Thanks for the comparison. I’m looking for a deer rifle that’s light enough to carry on long hikes and cheap enough where I wouldn’t mind if it got rained on in the field. I also like .308 as a caliber because it wouldn’t be too expensive to take to the range a lot. I’m leaning towards the Ruger right now but it looks like either would serve that purpose. Great video keep them coming!

I'm kind of partial to the Savage but that's probably because I own an Axis in 308 and an Axis II in 6.5CM. Yeah, the Ruger trigger is lighter out of the box but MCARBO has a trigger kit for the Savage that is stupid easy to install. You don't need the XP version of the Savage either since the scope that comes with it is pretty garbage so save yourself a little money right there.

You didn't take them apart and clean and loctite everything! The scope and rings that come with them are junk and need thrown in the trash. I just bought a AXIS 2 308 Winchester with the ACCU trigger and put on a 25 year old simmons scope I had in the closet with new heavy rings and it will shoot a 1 inch group at a 100 yards all day long. Both of those rifles are capable of much better accuracy than that. The 1 and 10 twist barrels like lighter 150 grain bullets. Enjoy the guns guy's and good luck!

With some elemental gunsmithing both rifles should get 3/4 inch groups all day; try an aftermarket trigger, fiberglass bed the action and then load 155 grain nosler custom competition bullets paired with either IMR 3031 or 4895. Last mod is try a front AND rear sandbag!

Wish yall had some Winchester power-points in 180 gr. My Ruger American 308 is really taken a shine to. All I did was lighten the trigger and put a vortex crossfire scope on it. The only ammo I could find at the time was 2 boxes of 180 gr. Power-points. It took 4 shots to sight in at 100 yds. After letting it cool off for twenty minutes, the first 3 shots punched a single jagged hole that measured .64 in. Please try these next time and if it doesn't like em, make sure all the screws are Tite on your guns and re- try. I won't buy anything else for my Black Ruger American rifle in 308.

Comments are okay, but help is needed. Practice but perfect practice leads to success. Don't go and buy expensive ammunition. Begin by using a rear bag plus try to maintain contact with the rifle stock. Every time that you lift up your head, the human eye falls into a different position. When I shoot one sitting, I will limit the number of rounds shot; jerking the trigger is a bad habit to break. If you guys have a 22LR bolt action rifle use that to train, or even Ruger 10-22; transition between the two firearms. Also, I've been to Minnesota the Moorhead/ Fargo, ND for whitetail deer last there in 2009. I got my buck over 200 pounds with a 30-06.

Your not wrong, both rifles are capable of better groupings. I'm sure with match grade ammo like Federal Gold Medal Match and other high end ammo they would show that. The Hornaday Black was good out of both rifles, the Savage was 1.5 MOA and the Ruger would've been similar if I didn't pull the 3rd shot. Human error will always be apart of accurate shooting. That's why I made follow up videos with just myself as the shooter, unfortunately the scope failed internally on the Savage before that video. The groupings weren't as good as expected and we may make a follow up video using a lead sled or something for stability.

Video was fine, but "forgive the groupings". Nah, sorry. Hard to establish how good or bad the rifle is, if the worst part of the experiment is the shooter. Having said that and assuming that the shooters are ok, that grouping was piss poor with all brands, last group possibley being an exception. The Ruger is noted for having an accurate cold hammer forged barrel - doesnt look like it. I'd say well away from them. For $200 more you can get a Tikka T3X and a whole lot better rifle in all respects.

In most cases won't the human element always be the worst part? 90% of the firearms in the world are probably more accurate than the person behind it. Knowing what we know now and with all the comments talking about the groupings, which aren't stellar I agree, I wouldn't mind revisiting this test in the future. Either way we appreciate the view and comment.

These are really lousy groups. I have a savage axis as a spare gun and it is a tack driver. I have not shot a group with any ammo that Is as huge as these groups are. With match ammo, definitely under 1 inch and even with hunting ammunition, darn good and at worst one and a half inches.

@@Northwoods.Nobodies Apologies, I dont agree that the human element is the worst part. A good shot and a shit rifle does not get good results. I can shoot to 1/4 or 1/3rd MOA with a hunting rifle. I spent 22 yrs in the Brit Armed forces using 2 MOA rifles. Who is the problem, me or the rifle? My groups were the best you could expect of the rifle and 2 MOA was much better than that woeful shooting in your video.

No both are trash. I don’t want to come off being mean but both guns can’t hold a group. I would put the Remington model 700 up against both of those, rifles same ammo same wind the 700 will win I would bet my house on it.
@Northwoods.Nobodies

I certainly hope a Remington 700 would beat both those rifles 🤣. I put more stock in us shooting like shit that day but both rifles are plenty capable. Further load development would help as well but both rifles seemed to like Hornady Black. Which makes sense it's the highest quality ammo we had that day.

More than likely it was us. Both rifles are very capable, first videos are tough. We could've scrubbed the whole thing and shot again but we opted to release our findings as they were that day.

I like the newer stock of the axis. But rugers gun is more Aesthetically pleasing. However the prices on the guns keep going up and up. Now days for the price for another hundred or so you can get into a better rifle. I own the American in 7mm08 and an axis in 6.5 creed and both were around 300 when I purchased them

The price is almost out of "budget" rifle range, over Black Friday the Axis was on sale at Cabela's for $350($300 for a club member). I tend to prefer the Ruger stock as well but I haven't tried the Savage 110 line yet.

@@Northwoods.Nobodies I own two of the savage 110 models one is a savage hog hunter in 338 federal which has become my favorite cartridge and the other is a 110 predator in 243 Winchester. @@Northwoods.Nobodies yes 338 federal. It’s kind of the cartridge nobody has ever heard about. At the same time it was supposed to be released hornady released a cartridge we all know the 6.5 creed. Which basically took all the press away from the 338. It’s a 308 win necked up to accept 338 bullets. However it’s a light magnum in performance. I can push a 160 gr bullet at 3050 fps giving it around 3400 ft pounds of energy. Which puts it on par or surpassing the 7mm mag. With 200gr to 215 gr bullets I can get 2650 to 2700fps all out of a 20” barrel. It’s devastating on deer. But the gun has a nice stock and action on it. At the time which was about 5 years ago I paid 399 for the gun.

If you're looking to buy a new rifle both have left hand offerings. Both have pretty nice actions with the Savage possibly being a little smoother in my opinion. I haven't used a new Ruger American lately but I doubt they've made any major changes, the one used in the video was a used gun when I got it. - Patrick
