Budget friendly rifles capable of sub moa and 1000 yard hits, we compare the Savage Axis, and Ruger American Predator.
We go over the similarities and differences between the 2 rifles.
The higher cost Ruger American Predator wins straight out of the box with a better trigger and bedding system in my opinion.
The heavy barreled Savage Axis, with its lower price and quality heavy barrel lends itself to a fantastic project gun.
Check out the video and see what you think.

I own both. Savage in 223 and Ruger in 6.5 creedmoor. I love both rifles. One bit of advice I can give is dump the crappy stocks and replace with laminate wood. It’s will make a world of improvement.

I have an Axis in 270 and Axis xp II in 6.5 creedmoor, along with two of those Ruger Americans in 308 and 243. I didn't think the Axis was in the same class when I bought the .270, it just didn't feel or operate as good but I bought the creedmoor with the accu-trigger and it changed my mind. It's amazing how a simple trigger can improve something. Also the long action magazine in the 270 just doesn't operate as good as the shot action creedmoor. The big negative for the Axis is the bolt throw, I mess up and smash my thumb against the scope all the time.

I love both but the Ruger is better in every way with the exception of not having as heavy a barrel as the Axis .308’s heavy barrel. That’s not to say the Axis is bad, it’s a great rifle and generally much cheaper than the Predator (at today’s prices) but the Ruger is my favorite of the two.

I'm really liking the savage axis 2 xp . If I get this rifle I'm considering changing out the stock later on . Might cost a bit more but I think it would make it a better rifle. Just a simple all around hunting rifle. On the ruger American the videos I watched its hit and miss with that rifle but I did watch one video about the synthetic stocks on both the savage and the ruger is part of the acrecy issues .Any ideas on this ?

I watched all the videos of guys complaining about the Ruger Predator so I went out and bought one in 223 cal.. ($430 w/tax) I took care of all the complaints, ..freed up the barrel so it floats, lightened the trigger, cinched down the receiver bolts, put on a 20MOA rail, threw on a Nikon 4-12x 40mm BDC scope, added a bi-pod and took it to the range. Once I got it zeroed at 100yrds, ..my three shot groups averaged .650, my best was .450 using 68 gr Hornady HPBT bullets, 24.5 gr of Varget. Plus I was 100% on 10 shots at the small steel pig target up the hill at 500 yrds. The Ruger's a shooter and for the price, it just takes patience and a few minor tweaks. ...I'm more then satisfied with the Ruger.

Picked up a Savage Axis XP in .223 lastnight. Zero slop in the factory 5.5 lb trigger. A simple polishing brought it down to around 4 lb. Blindfolded, theres no difference between this and the triggers in my Mossberg Patriot and T/C Compass other than the center blade on those triggers. Granted, some people like their triggers down to 2 lb or so, this trigger is nice and crisp from the factory with zero slop and play. After sales tax and a mail in rebate, I'm looking at a $208 investment.

I have the RAP in 6.5 Creedmoor. I stiffened the Ruger stock fore arm by routing out a channel for an aluminum arrow, used putty for glue dams and epoxied it in place with JB WELD. Now the fore arm is very stiff in all planes. I use this plastic stock for mountain hunting B/C it's 1 lb. lighter than the excellent Boyd's stock. MY RUGER AMERICAN PREDATOR UPGRADES: 1. Timmy trigger (most important upgrade for better accuracy) 2. Boyd's Classic laminated stock (cinnamon color & fish scale checkering - amazing quality for the price) 3. 20 MOA picatinny rail 4. MAGUL modular sling W/ flush cup swivels 5. SWFA 3 - 15 x 42 SS. mil/mil turrets and reticle, side parallax knob, First Focal Plane reticle With Hornady 140 gr. ELD-M ammo I get 1/2 MOA accuracy off a bench & cast iron rest. 143 gr. ELD-X accuracy is 3/4 MOA.

I wonder why a rifle mfg (like Savage) wouldn't angle the bolt handle to be more ergonomic? Unless they're reusing an "off the shelf" bolt they already make for another rifle, there's no cost to designing it from the start with just a bit greater angle to aid the shooter. Weird... I just picked up a Savage Axis with the Accu-trigger and the action is pretty darn smooth and the trigger crisp.

If any of you are looking for some other options, I would suggest some of the savage cabela's exclusives like the 12 FV or the FCP-SR available anywhere. I got my fcp 6.5 out again this weekend and shot another three shot group around three quarters of an inch at 200 yrds using factory hornady match 120 amax. This is my first savage and I have to say that I have been very impressed with the rifles savage is bringing to the table. Tremendous accuracy and good triggers out of the box. I don't even think about anything from Remington anymore. Nice Vid man. Maybe one day I'll borrow a camera and do a review on my FCP.
@ADudeAndSomeGuns
@ADudeAndSomeGuns 7 жыл бұрын
I agree. If you have the money, the FCP-SR is one of the best packages possible out there. And you can pick em up for about $600. No need for modifications, its just good to go. I just wanted to see what was possible with the "lowest end" Savage.

I got my FCP for just under $600. I am still really wanting the ranch like yours. Out here in Utah I can't think of a better truck/ranch gun. It would pair well with my mini 14 as well. Keep up the good work on these. I love showing my buddies your videos when they have told me time and time again how much they invest for a "good" or "accurate" gun. My goal on my FCP was to be under $1k with glass and gun and I did. Keeping your gun price reasonable just allows us guys to shoot more.

I bought one about 6 yrs. ago in a 22-250. It was the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. After sighting it in, I shot a 9 shot group which ended up consisting of two holes in the target at 100 yds. (the one "flyer" was less than 1/4 inch from the hole the other 8 shots made) However, with the heavy barrel, it was just too heavy for this old man to lug around when hunting. I sold it and bought the Ruger American Predator in the 22-250. Not quite as accurate but still keeps my groups at 100 yds. under 1".

I actually had to take a file to my Axis bolt so it would clear my scope and the factory bases stripped out when I tried to use a one piece base. But my Axis 2 with accutrigger and a box of bullets out the door was $298. The Ruger is a better gun in my opinion but when the axis is on sale it's a hard deal to beat. I bought mine as a cheap 4-wheeler/truck gun so I don't mind it's imperfections.

Savage.. the definition of accuracy! Can't buy this kind of accuracy for the $$$. On the axis; trim the trigger spring 1- 1/4 turns and file the sear pin smooth. Put a thin washer in the trigger pin to eliminate wobble. You now have a very accurate sweet shooting budget rifle.

Great video. With all that said I have to say personally they tie on the trigger because the Axis is available with an accutrigger. However overall I believe the American is a better rifle and if I can ever find one as cheap as I found my brand new axis II with accutrigger ($216 out the door) I will absolutely own one. But for now, my little my little cheap project savage axis precision rifle is more than I could hope for and cheap. I'm still getting my reloads down (working on neck tensioning, consistent OAL, and temp variations now) but she's a damn fine shooter. I'm wondering if the Ruger may not have an advantage there as well, seeing as the savage seats the magazine feeding area very low compared to the chamber, which puts a lot of strain on the projectile and neck during chamfering and has caused some consistency issues... Ah well, again great video and thanks for taking all the time and effort to do these awesome projects and tests man

So, new shooter here. Newish. Really want to get into long range shooting and am looking at the savage 111, Remington 700, and at the higher end, the RPR gen 2. Gonna be a super newb now and say the RPR is friggin sexy! Buuuuut its heavy, I'm newish to the long range game (like want to start new) and I don't load my own ammo...if I went with RPR, it would definitely take some saving up, but I'm patient. I've tried the savage 111 and really like the way the bolt slide. Dig the Remington too and want to drop it in a magpul stock. Any advice/guidance would be SUPER helpful and much appreciated

There is a lot more aftermarket parts for a Remington 700 than there is for both of these guns combined. If you are planning on customizing the rifle, I'd pick a 700 over either. Just keep in mind that Remington isn't clambering the 6.5 creedmoor currently since they have the 260 rem that they've neglected for years.

Your uploads are greatly appreciated. Now run down to the nearest dollar store and grab yourself a cheap door mat for your table- I cringe everytime you set a rifle atop that iron work patio table!!! AllMyBest (Browning AB3 Rocks the House)

6.5 creedmore savage axis ii xp or 6.5 creedmore ruger predator? what one gonna be the better

The 6.5 Creedmoor basically will shoot flatter on the long run. Anything under 200 yards is a crap shoot. Very shallow question. Depends on one intent of game, distance to shoot or targets likewise. They are two different animals.

To make is more even next time, compare the Savage Axis II, and a regular Ruger American, not the predator version. Otherwise it's apples to oranges. Not apples to apples. Still a sweet video, but I feel even the Axis one with a few mods, and a nice stock is a more well made, reliable action. Especially with the floating bolt head.

a question to ponder, what about the possibility the Ruger didnt copy the savage stock, but both companies for their lower end rifles farmed out their stocks to another company who basically makes the same design but with a few "differences" from the wish of the company be it Ruger or Savage? I like the Ruger much better myself, but while I agree I dont like either stock, Im seeing more 3rd party companies make custom stocks for the Ruger American then the Savage Axis, that is if your wanting to toss some money down for such "either" rifle... at least you have some more options through other 3rd party companies is all Im saying, for the Ruger is all... But the original stock, I think possibily both have theirs farmed out and each just have that other company do some minor differences is all... BTW, love your videos ADudeAndSomeGuns... keep rockin!

It's not just the stocks. Ruger also "borrowed" mag style, barrel nut, and floating bolt head. It's very nearly the same rifle under a different name.

ruger also used the 3 lug 60 degree bolt throw from the browning A bolt hunter. while savage used the traditional 2 lug from the traditional mauser design.

I think the savage axis 2 would make for a better comparison.
