We take a look at the Jeff Cooper brainchild, the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle. It's chambered in .308 / 7.62X51 and is one handy little rifle.

A huge selling point to me is the fact that they sell a left handed version. I know all the left handed people in the audience understand the pain of trying to find a left-handed bolt action rifle for a decent price.

I dont know if anyone has mentioned this but this gunsite scout rifle is capable of mounting a scope traditionally over the bolt. All you have to do is take off the back sight and notice the indentations on the top of receiver. Which those are for mounting Ruger's rings. So you are able to put a traditional scope with rings and if you choose you can mount a red dot on the forward picatinny rail. Love this rifle and hickok45's videos

I purchased this gun about 2 years ago and I love it. I have always loved the 308 and this is the perfect match for this size gun in the woods. I deer hunt and have never shot a deer with a 308 more than once. They also have it in stainless and if you don't want the muzzle break, you can remove it and put a thread protector on it or you can change muzzle breaks if you want. I purchased a left handed one just because I prefer to shoot a rifle left handed while I shoot my hand guns right handed. Great little gun at a reasonable price.

***** Since the US military defined a *carbine* as a rifle with a barrel length less than 18". Originally the term carbine simply meant a shortened version of a full length rifle.
@OOTurok
@OOTurok 9 жыл бұрын
***** Well take up your complaints with the US military & the ATF then. They are the ones who changed the definition of (carbine) to being any rifle variant with a barrel length less than 18"........ And technically speaking any rifle with a barrel length less than 16" is still a carbine too, but that little (National Firearms Act) thing reclassified such weapons as (short barreled rifles). If you are successful with your little semantic fit; then maybe my 18" barreled *M1A scout rifle* can be reclassified as a carbine with it's 16" SOCOM baby brother.
@OOTurok
@OOTurok 9 жыл бұрын
***** This is from Wikipedia... *"The modern usage of the term carbine covers much the same scope as it always had, namely lighter weapons (generally rifles) with barrels less than 457.2 mm (18.00 in). These weapons can be considered carbines, while rifles with barrels of 457.2 mm (18.00 in) or more are generally not considered carbines unless specifically named so, and depending on the weapon's power."*_______________ This is a very loose definition used primarily by the ATF, US military, NATO, & gun manufacturers. It's not an official classification, but in the general sense,... weapons used by the military, that are called carbines, have barrels less than 18", most commonly 16" or less. ______________ Just like you, I personally don't hold to this definition of carbine, but the term has been used in this usage so commonly now, most people recognize it by this definition. It's like the term (sniper rifle). Technically there's no such thing, b/c without the sniper... it's just a rifle.
@OOTurok
@OOTurok 9 жыл бұрын
***** I agree, but you know how it is. Slang language becomes official language with enough usage; especially when manufacturers give in to using the slang to market their products along with military & gov. agencies adopting the terminology.

A few years ago I took my daughters to Gunsite for the 270 Rifle class. One daughter and I took Ruger Gunsite Scouts. The other took a Steyr Scout. Five days and about 700 rounds later the rifle felt as comfortable and a pistol and hits from 20 to 400 yards were no problem for any of us. I can strongly recommend both the rifle and the course. Together they are wonderful and a great investment.

I bought an all weather Scout in .308. I swapped out the rail for an XS rail which had a rear sight mounted on it that had a larger aperture. The Ruger one was too small for these old tired eyes. The rail allowed me to put a Burris P.E.P.R. mount and a XTR Burris 1 x 6 scope. I also put on a Yankee Hill Flash Hider. It is a great all around rifle. So many uses. I also got a couple of plastic magazines to replace the metal one.

Have only held a scout mounted scope rifle once years ago and immediately came to believe that it may have offered the best combination for fast target acquisition (almost iron-sight like) and large clear sight picture. Checked around for awhile back then but didn't find much interest or come up with a scout mounting arrangement. Now, you put together a .308 (cheap available ammo), drop magazine, Ruger m77 action, attractive overall appearance, and reasonable price and it's a winner for me. My perfect gun!

Here in Australia We don't have a Bill of Rights as far as Firearms go but I would say to the "Nay Sayers" the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia used to have a Bumper Sticker that said "When Guns Are Outlawed Only Outlaws Will Have Guns" Why are People afraid of Law Abiding Citizens? Shouldn't We be afraid of the Criminals? People Kill People! More People are Killed by Knives so do We Ban Knives? Politicians are Nuttier than Fruit Cake They only look to see what is popular in the Media! And the Media Demonize Gun Owners! Not the Criminals!

With anti-gun people it's usually one of two things driving them: 1.) Blame the easiest thing to blame instead of the actual problem, i.e. Criminals. 2.) It's about the State having power over the citizens.
@GeorgiaBoy1961
@GeorgiaBoy1961 5 жыл бұрын
Re: "Why are People afraid of Law Abiding Citizens?"It is hard and dangerous work to go after criminals, whereas it is easy to persecute the innocent and claim that the actions taken will catch those who break the law. The other difficulty is that the outlaw generally doesn't abide by the law anyway, when obtaining a firearm - usually getting it in the underworld or black market. So, in order to be seen as "doing something" about gun crime, the government must go after the only "target" available - the lawful firearm owner. And of course, there are those in political circles who want ordinary people disarmed for their own nefarious purposes.

As a concept, the short, light, detachable magazine, bolt action rifle dates back to at least the Enfield no. 5 jungle carbine. That dates back almost 70 years ago. Looking at the rifle you were shooting, with the exception of the rail, it almost looks like a jungle carbine. Shoot it without the modern recoil pad and you would see why soldiers detested a short light rifle with a cartridge that kicks like a .303 or .308.

Hey Hickok I received my 308 gunsite scout rifle and took it up to the range a couple weeks ago and man that thing seems to have some pretty serious kick!, do you think a muzzle brake is going to help?. Also I ordered up a Ruger Mini 14 223 Target Rifle and was wondering if you have any suggestions on which brand of ammo to use for consistent accuracy?. I made the mistake of shooting into a paper target with my gunsite that already had been somewhat riddled by my 22 plinking so it was kinda hard to tell where I was hitting and after 12 or so shots I went back to my 22LR. You must be an awfully good shot to nail them targets 230 yards upstream with the stock iron sights, that is good shooting in my book.

I just got this rifle a few months ago. I also placed a high scope mount on it along with a 4.5-18X40 Bushnell scope. That way I can alternate between the scope and the iron sites. Very accurate weapon and great for hog hunting out here in central TX. To quote Col. Jeff Cooper, "Feral hogs beware, I descend upon thee." LOL.

I am always interested in Mr. Hickok and his review of various firearms. He’s the man!😎. Just a point of order however, Jeff Cooper, like all United States Marines, is a “Marine”, period! He is not an “ex-Marine” or a “former Marine”, or a “Retired Marine”, he is a “Marine”. And that’s according to Commandant, General James F. Amos, when he stated, “A Marine is a Marine. I set the policy two weeks ago - there’s no such thing as a “former”Marine. You’re a Marine, just in a different uniform and you’re in a different phase of your life. But you’ll always be a Marine because you went to Parris Island, San Diego, or the hills of Quantico”. Nuff said.

I have 2, Ruger Scouts. They are a joy to have. Both equipped with Leupold 2.5 power. Good magazines, short, and the forward scope really is useful. I take mine on hikes and often drop a coyote or other vermin with them. The forward scope makes tracking on a fast target easier. The mags are big but don't get easily misplaced in the pickup and work with my Savage also. It's not a pretty rifle but it works.

This thing is INSANELY ACCURATE, right out of the box. Long range shooting? Just so y'all know, I got this thing out to 800 yards (3 in a row on an 18in plate) with 175 grain ammo and I bet it would've gone past 1000 yards with 185 grain. Amazing rifle. You can't fucking miss with the iron sights either. And I'm no sharpshooter. Never believe the BS about short-barreled long-range rifle performance being no good. This thing puts them all to shame. Amazing work Ruger! And hell yeah @hickok45 for the great videos!

There is no point to forward mounting a scope on a gun with no stripper clip guides. Ruger should have made this work with m14 stripper clips.
@Trollygag
@Trollygag 9 жыл бұрын
trailduster6bt That's not true at all... Having both a scout with a forward mounted LER scope and several rifles with traditionally mounted scope, I can definitely say there are a lot of advantages to having a forward mounted scope, the most important being that the critical angle between the eye and the scope isn't as important, making it super quick to point. Even 1x magnification sights like the Eotech aren't as fast to point as a forward mounted scope like the Leupold FX-II IER, and sights like the Eotech obscure a lot of your vision around the ring that the thin edge of the scope does not.

I think it sucks that most modern hunting rifles can't use stripper clips. Might as well be using a Lee Metford rifle.

With shorter magazines, one of THE BEST things about a forward-mounted sight is being able to carry your rifle with your left hand over the action, at that PERFECT balance point...

you can reload the polymer mags from the top, but not the steel mag that comes w/ the rifle. I've had mine for several years, put about 800 rds through it. In order to cut weight I only use the polymer magazines and I enjoy being able to top load.

Second tip on this rifle, is on the bolt action operation. This bolt tends stick in places when it is not being pushed directly forward. I have found to really help with this, apply gun grease to the entire bolt assembly, on the top side of the case extractor bar that moves up and down and in the groove it rides in. Replace the bolt and work the action a few times. Now remove the bolt once more and remove any excess grease. Hope this helps anyone with this rifle. It did for me :-). Enjoy!

Modern CNC machining is of enormous benefit, but the drawback is that almost no-one hand-fits or hand-finishes fine firearms anymore. So you get tight tolerances on a new rifle, and you have to work to wear it in. An old trick used by the USMC back in the day was to use lapping compound on a new bolt and rifle - and via repeated cycles of taking a small amount of surface off, cleaning, re-lubricating and test-firing, those men were able to have bolt-actions that run very quickly and smoothly. Of course, the same process takes place as shots are fired through the rifle, but that takes time. Fine firearms are sort of like fine engines; the parts in them need to be "wear-mated" to function at their best. A new rifle needs some time to be broken in and worn into shape. Just as a new engine needs a break-in period to perform at its best.

I picked up a Ruger Gunsite Scout from Impact Guns in Ogden, UT. Have taken it to both an indoor and an outdoor range. Fired a bunch of Winchester .308 through it, as well as some Aguila NATO 7.62mm. The Winchester performed flawlessly, but the Aguila was less reliable. Had at least one or two duds, per box of 20 Aguila shells. Will be trying some Federal .308 and NATO 7.62mm next, just to compare. I am quite pleased with the weapon so far. Been using iron sights, which are a challenge for a guy who's had double cataract surgery. Even so, I've been putting rounds squarely on the silhouette at both 25 and 50 yards. Very few issues, aside from occasional "hesitant" bolt; once the gun gets really hot. There are definitely far smoother bolts on dedicated .270 and .300 deer rifles. But as a tactical concept rifle, I like the Ruger Gunsite Scout. The 10-cartridge magazine is great, for a bolt rifle. Love the powerful cartridge, which compliments my M&P 15. NOTE: my Ruger came with two polymer 10-round magazines, not metal, which may reflect a factory change.

I'm pretty amazed that so many people are here commenting about weight. It comes down to personal preference, but held in 2 hands (it's a rifle after all...) or shoulder-slung the GSR has never felt heavy to me. It weighs as much as one would expect from a rifle. You can put on a poly stock or do other things to reduce weight, but even fully loaded, with a sling I made out of braided para-cord and Harris bipod, my GSR feels slightly heavier than a gallon of milk. Definitely NOT "too heavy."

God bless Ruger for making this rifle, and Hickok for making this video. I'll buy one this summer. Like Hickok says in the video, THIS IS A COOL RIFLE. Thanks for the great video, sir! I shot in military Highpower matches at a civilian club. One man in particular had a bolt gun. We were all using of course either m16's or m-14's.This gentleman was shooting like a Remington 40x repeater and he would reload with 5round stripper clips. He was competing against Soldiers with Semiautomatic rifles. If you had seen this man shoot this gun you would not say this rifle isn't for self defense. He was a High Master if that tells you anything about his ability to fire this gun rapidly.
