The M14 was used in Vietnam all the way till 1973. It had been Dismissed as the military's prime weapon. But they were still used. And they were better than any 16 that was on the field. They did not file up. They always shot. And they were very accurate.

@TheWaldtige. I forgot to mention this part. They were collected and stored after Nam. The reason I know this I had to turn mine in. The best shooting weapon I have ever had. I bought a civilian model M14. It's got a tripod and a extremely good scope on it. 800 yd is not a problem with the M14. At least I thought it was 800 yards. The sergeant above me said it was a 1000 or 1100 yd. I don't think it was but I did not argue with him. He was a E7. I was a E5 at the time.

Civilian model is the M1a, yet you made that clear, but still called said weapon a M14. Huge difference in wordage. Btw: I do not believe your post. Unless you were part of a participant unit, the M4 platform was/still standard issue. 🤔 My tours. Only specialized M14’s placed inside Sage EBR chassis, were common.

@@Sasquatchmedic I was with the 25th Infantry Division , 3rd Brigade, 2nd Battalion / 27th Infantry Regiment - Wolfhounds based out of Orgun - E and Waza Kwah in Afghanistan 2004-2005. As well as Fob McHenry and Hawijah in Iraq 2006-2007. You are correct about M4’s being the standard issue rifles but we did have 4 of the M-14’s per company 1 per platoon. These were used only as designated marksman rifles as I stated earlier. We only had 1 in a Sage Chassis the rest were in the original stocks which were painted desert camo. @@davidholder-oe1oe I heard that brother, I liked shooting ours every time I got the chance and yes they are a very accurate rifle!!! I know you guy’s had a lot of problems with the new M16’s when they first came out. Since both of them in the beginning of Nam had 20 round magazines I would have definitely picked the stopping power of the 7.62 nato over a .556 any day for the same amount of rounds. Even if having to hump it around was a little heavier. I think it would be worth the trade off. Unfortunately I never got to shoot ours on full auto. The armorer’s took out the selector switch when they turned them into our designated marksman rifle. Guess they were going for accuracy more then suppressive fire. I could imagine that would be a handful to hold onto though !!!

That is great to hear, jts1991. When I've spoken to them over the phone they have been helpful and professional. I had an odd quirk with my rifle (case separation) but it has not recurred. If it does, they want the rifle back for inspection.

I've call customer service at Springfield several times over the years for various things. The may have the best customer service I've ever had to deal with.

Front sight on my SOCOM broke in half. Springfield sent me a new sight.

I was gonna say, its only a matter of time before a brittle cast bolt would snap. Forged metal is more flexible and durable for the long haul than cast metal universally. Tempering > case hardening. More expensive, but far better quality.

I had an M24 when I first got to Vietnam in '66. but a month later I was huey crew chief, and they replaced it with the M16. I didn't have to use the 16 much, mostly fired the M60 on the aircraft, but I always wished I could have kept the M14...

I also was in the Corps in 69 and qualified expert with the M14 with iron sights and it was the first time I ever shot a high caliber rifle. Semper Fi.

When & where? I was in Platoon 1056, series 1053, summer '73. We were the last series to go through boot camp with the M14 in MCRD San Diego.

Are you kidding me? I was in Platoon 1059, summer of 1973. I joined June 18, 1973 and only because my Draft Number was 12 and I was certain I was going to get drafted, so I did the 9-month delay program. Small world, isn't it? I am also one of the Camp Lejeune Water Contamination victims. I was at Disbursements School at Camp Lejeune right after boot camp--was only there three months--but the frigging water gave me incurable/terminal cancer. I was diagnosed 15 years ago, got 100% disability from the VA 13 years ago, and am one of the first to file a claim with Parker Waichman. Instead of accepting a settlement offer, I am going for the full-blown lawsuit since I endured 6 years of experimental chemotherapy at the University of California, San Diego and my diagnosis cut my career there as a Chief Administrative Officer by 8 years. Hey, if you went to Camp Lejeune and got one of the cancers eligible, I would strongly urge you to contact Parker Waichman attorneys. Jerry Parker helped write the legislation that resulted in Congress passing the law so we can get compensation. The deadline for filing a claim is August 9 of this year, since Congress put a two-year limit on filing a claim. Thanks for responding to my post. I love Hickok 45's videos! Cheers

The M14/M1A is by far the prettiest gun I have ever seen. It's a shame we never really used it much in war.

+Andrew Quesenberry I used it in "68 after a dozen junky M-16's nearly got me killed. I always kept1 mag of tracers to mark for the gunships. Everyone would have carried them if they could have gotten them.

Only tried air-soft M14's so no idea how accurate it is to the real steel for feel but have to say the safety on this guns is great for accurate shooting! I can keep my site line and disengage the safety without having to move anything but my finger forward and then back on to the trigger !

I learned on the M14, I qualified on the M14, and I carried the M14. Hands down my favorite rifle. But I have to disagree on the safety. I think the safety position and design is catered to the armorer, and not the shooter. I would much rather have a lever.

Totally agree. I recently purchased the Springfield Armory M1A and LOVE IT!!! I actually prefer having the safety where it's placed on the M1A for the same reason you do. We constantly reminded our Marines (back when I was a commissioned USMC artillery officer) that they should never put their finger on the trigger until just they actually aimed their weapon at a target they intended to shoot (I find that I have to remind my civilian shooting buddies of that same basic rule all the time.). Having that safety inside the trigger guard means the shooter has a tactile signal that the weapon is NOT ready to fire and allows them to disengage the safety with only minimal effort while keeping their finger inside the trigger guard.

Sorry you lost him. It's funny, but sometimes when I'm watching some old John Wayne Western made in the 1930's, I think about how my dad very likely went to the theatre in Williamstown, Ky, as a teenager and watch that same movie on the big screen when it came out.

wiipimp32 Well I don't think the U.S./Allies used an M1 that shot garland out of it as you said. We weren't exactly in the Christmas spirit with the enemy back in the WWII days. You may have been confused with the Christmas truce of WWI, although, that involved England and Germany and not the U.S. But, even that event was probably false. Medal of Honor was incredible for its day for sure. Video games don't have to be 100% right all the time.

The m1 shot 8 7.62 calibre rounds and was tweir primary battlerifle. The m1a didn't come around till the end of ww2 I'm prototype form. Perfected it became the m1a. I think it largely depends on how well the firearms are maintained. If they're shot a lot and poorly looked after it could happen to anything. I've never seen Berettas fail, but I never understood why that was the handgun chosen for military service.

Jamie Clement my building inspector ( US ) building inspector is a 74 year old active army man. He said he hit the shores of Vietnam a week after turning 17 with a m14 battled his way inland for 2 tours with it . Then one day the Brass brought them some plastic 223 rifles saying they had to change . He said his whole unit sighed a letter stating the only way that would happen was over their dead bodies and every man had just volunteered anoither 2 years of life to the cause. He explained to me they needed the 308 when being charged by a large number so as to shot one time and take up to 4 enemy out . And to penetrate the trees and brush in the jungles. He said he would work till his body stopped permitting him to . Nice ol gent. Nobody questions his inspections!

Maybe he's physically active and his time in the Army really defined him? At any rate, the last active duty Vietnam vet left service in 2014. 2 - only sniper sections used the M14 in Vietnam, anyone who says they got to choose is lying out their ass. 3 - .223 penetrates brush perfectly fine. 4 - Nobody may have questioned his inspections, but they should question his tall tales.

It took me 3 years but I finally got the SOCOM16 . It’s an amazing weapon, down to the high pitched ring after firing a round. It’s predictable and reliable. What else do you need?

I really want to get one of these. I'm in college so I would need to keep it at my parent's house; but in the least I can shoot it on the weekends. I just want a great semi auto rifle that is reliable and doesn't require the dang rifle to be disassembled to remove the magazine. California is so bloody Communist they may try to outlaw these so I want to get one quick and deck it out.

EVER Norico weapon I've held has felt of the highest quality (from a production standard) the SKS and Rem 870 clones are superb.
