I've had the pleasure owning 6 of these. Only lost one. When I hit the road for some work, I left the Speed Six with the wife. Somehow it became hers during the divorce. I miss that gun more than I ever missed her.

I inherited my grandpas 1972 Security Six. He was a security guard at a power plant and it was his duty weapon.

My brothers and I owned several Speed/Service/Security-Sixes over the years. We still have one in the family, a 2-3/4" .38 Spl. Speed-Six. The bluing is about 90% gone but the action is tight and fully functional. We stopped counting rounds through it at about 20,000 (not a misprint) and that was 20+ years ago. It was also stolen, thought lost forever and then recovered a few years later in a felony traffic stop hundreds of miles from home. Thanks to the Erie, PA police department, a family heirloom was returned.

My parents gave me a 4" stainless security 6 when I graduated from HS. In 83. They are both gone now still have the Ruger. Won't ever part with it. I have several Rugers but this one is my favorite.

As far as I'm concerned, the 4 inch .357 magnum still rules. Yah, I'm old.

We were issued new Security Sixes when I joined the Border Patrol in 1975 as the Border Patrol awarded Ruger the contract over Colt who had been their supplier for many years . Tough as nails and very reliable. Thanks very much for posting. Much appreciated.

When I turned 21 1st thing I did was buy a brand new Police Service Six SS and still have it today at 58. Was my 1st Ruger handgun but definitely not my last. Lol

I have a Ruger Security Six from the 80's that I got handed down from my dad. It's a powerful weapon but the kickback isnt bad at all with proper wrist control. Just one of these bullets will do what three 9mm rounds can. Thats why practice is important. Action is still as tight after 30+ years. And yes, Hickook45, I'm old enough to remember when damn near every cop in Cleveland had one of these on their hip.

My first firearm was the stainless steel .357 Security Six, which I bought in 1981. The guy at the gun shop told me that this will someday be a classic. He was correct. It’s still firing flawlessly to this day. I still carry it hiking and on backcountry camping trips and it’s a lot of fun at the range.

I bought my stainless with 4" barrel in '82, built like a tank and a great shooter.

My first handgun, (six inch blued Security Six) bought 2 days after my 21st birthday in 1977. Still the smoothest action of any of my revolvers, testament to lots of dry fire with snap caps back in the day. Still looks and functions like new after thousands of .38 and .357 rounds. Great underrated revolver.

My grandpa bought a stainless 357 security six in the 80's. Before he passed away in 2019 he passed it down to me. I remember when he would let someone, especially girls shoot it he would load it with five rounds of 38 special and one 357 magnum just to see the look on their face when they didn't expect it! In recent years he always watched your video on a gun before he bought it. He would be proud to see this one.

About 1999, one morning at 3 a.m., CBS news did a report where they went to a gun shop and bought two nice Service Sixes. They took them to a range, shot good groups ,then took them to a machine shop and chop sawed them into four or five pieces. Claimed those Rugers would never be used to commit any mayhem. I started "Ruger Rescue" after witnessing this abuse and have saved two Service Sixes and one Speed Six since then (no Security Sixes yet). Great all around woods walk revolvers!

in the mid 1970s I lived in my hometown of suburban St. Louis, Mo and managed to buy a new Ruger Security Six 4 inch stainless revolver. I had it at the same time as I had acquired a 4 inch S&W 44. For all practical purposes they were quite similar. Over time I kept the S&W and still have it but I traded the Ruger Security Six for a Glock 23. I was flush with .357 magnums but did not have a .40 S&W so this got me into the .40 S&W game. As is so often the case I should have also kept the Security Six but that is hindsight.

Thank you for this video. The one that I own I have had for 30 years. Security Six, stainless steel, the barrel measures 2” from the frame. I had it professionally cleaned earlier this week and the gunsmith stated “this is immaculate”. When I bought it it had Pachmyar grips equipped. It also came with a Bianchi #111 Cyclone holster. It is tight and it is home! Again thank you for this video! I had mentioned this during one of your segments on revolvers. Awesome channel!

I have one in stainless and one in blue. I call them "The Ghost and The Darkness". They're both the Police Service Six and look amazing. Bought them for about 350.00 ea. just 2-3 yrs. ago. Love'em.

Just got a used 4" police service six as my first ever handgun. It will serve as my hunting sidearm for the years to come.

Miss my SS Security Six, loved the gun, many rounds down range, regret selling it. Ruger designed them all to be broken down with the rim of the cartridge either 38 or 357, no tool required. Of course the screwdriver was easier to use, but the factory Ruger grip screw was made to accept the cartridge rim, great idea 💡

Hickok I have a special place in my heart for the Security Six, it was my very first handgun when I turned 21. I picked it up at the very first gun show I ever attended. I was going to pick up a S&W 66, but I decided to think it over to the next day. When I went back the 66 was gone, but the Security Six was still there and I picked it up instead. Now I'm very glad I waited a day.

Good video. I got my 4" stainless Security Six new in 1979. It was my only gun for decades, although I never shot it all that much. It was nice to be able to shoot .38s as well. I've now got several, much newer semi-autos for target as well as conceal, but I still enjoy taking the Ruger to the range. I love its simplicity. No, it's not for sale. ;)

I swear the simple breakdown of this revolver was a way to repent for the difficulty of breaking down Ruger 22 Mark 1-3 pistols.

I got mine in "76" carried it on duty for yrs. I really liked it.

I bought a Security-Six in 1972 in blued. I sent it to Armoloy in Texas and had it Armoloy coated. Looks and works great and finish is impervious to rust and scratching and is much better than stainless.

I've had a Security-Six in Stainless since March of 1976. Came with a 2 3/4" bbl, sent it back to Ruger for a 6" bbl. In those days they returned the old bbl to you. I've shot many thousands of HOT .357Mag handloads thru mine, it's as tight as the day I bought it. Bought a Blue Speed-Six a few years later, had carbon steel hammer & trigger back then. Bought a Stainless Service-Six with a 3" bbl in 1988, only year that bbl was offered. And "round-butted" it, to fit Pachmayr Compac grips. In 1976 the Ruger Instruction manual said to use a Cartridge Rim to remove the grips. Ruger brought out the GP100 in answer to the S&W 686/586, NOT because of any "weakness" in the smaller frame. The correct HKS Speedloader for the Six Series is the MKIII, or COLT Mark III. Not the K-Frame 10-A. Now that I'm thru complaining, that was a Great Video.

I was a Cop in the 70's and 80's, my carry weapon was a Ruger Security Six that came with a heavy target barrel and target grips. I never saw another one. I carried it for 8 years, it never failed me once.

I love my Security Six. My dad bought one new back in the day and ended up trading it and later got an L-Frame Smith & Wesson. I bought the gun from the guy he traded it to and have no intentions of selling it ever.

90 year old guy sold me a Security Six Blue 4” at a gun show in Texas 20 years ago for $180. He said the 4” provided even distribution of balance to mitigate recoil. Had been kicking myself the last 4 years because it was part of a trade for a bus. Thanks to Buds Gun Shop I’m not so sad they posted those SS Service Six like the one in the video for low $400 or so in fair condition I didn’t hesitate and bought two. They came in my opinion great shape besides a little dirty. Watching your video just pulled out a dime, some hopps, and the mothers. They both are not only excellent shooters but absolutely beautiful. Won’t ever make the mistake of letting one go. Can’t say thanks enough to Buds Gun Shop and Hickok45 you should just send a check over to Bud and keep that loaner. Thank you Hickok45 for turning me onto Buds and I am certainly thankful all the wonderful deals that Buds has provided.

I have a speed six stainless in 357. I have owned this since the early 80's Bought it new. Did some work on the trigger polishing and bullseye springs. It is a Awesome shooter. Also have a security six in blue finish with the oversize walnut Ruger grips. Both are great guns.

I have a stainless 4" Police Service Six in 357 magnum. I've had this revolver for a long time and haven't had it out in a long time. Just watched your video and had to get it out. It's pretty much mint condition and is a great shooter. I have also seen a Service Six, but not sure of the difference. After watching this I need to take it to the range. Thanks for the memories.

Security Six (+/- 4" barrel) was the first .357 I ever shot - circa 1975. It was my college roommate's. Loved that gun. I wish I'd thought to try to buy it from him.

I started in the revolver sport in 1982 when I purchased a S&W 19-4, 6inch. I too, never ventured into Ruger “sixes”. Fast forward 40 plus years and low and behold I found a 2.75 inch Security Six in stainless. I have redeemed myself too. 😄

The Police Service Six (4", blued) was my first handgun. Great revolver. Still have it after 41 years and have no plans to get rid of it.

Been a while since I have shot mine....shot it today...come home to see this video. Loaded up some 158gr federal fusion projectiles and H110...pretty accurate.

Taking that Security Six apart or cleaning a black powder firearm can't be any more difficult than taking a Ruger Mark I,II, or III apart for cleaning. It's a labor of love. You just have to be in the right frame of mind. In 1980, I bought a Mark I and one day I will get a Mark IV. But the Mark I is going nowhere. I've been a subscriber for 10 years and I've heard you say how much trouble Rugers are to re-assemble. And keep a bucket on the table or on the ground near the table for your spent brass in.

They look incredibly well made too, they look like they could handle a hot .357 magnum all day, every day. Bill Ruger is a highly under estimated genius of revolver design and development. My Stainless steel Security Six was my first handgun on my NYS pistol license in 1999. I have fortunately left NY far behind but I have my security six!

My grandfather left me a security six when he passed. It's my first revolver, so I'm just a little biased, but it's such a beautiful and reliable gun

A great gun! I carried a 4" stainless Security Six as a member of my town's Police Reserve in the early '80s.

Many years ago my dad gave me a ruger security six, stainless steel, with a 6 1/2 barrel. I love that gun.

This is a Harry Siegfried design. Harry used the same lock work in the High Standard Sentinel revolvers. Early work at Winchester he developed the micro motion trigger for the M52 target rifle. While at Ruger he was responsible for the .44 magnum carbine and the 10/22 that fallowed a year later. The security Six and the GP 100 and Redhawk all use the same design of lock work. Very underappreciated for a long career of firearms design. Few know of him.

I'll take a Ruger revolver over a Smith any day. Tougher simpler, and they will take full house loads all the time and come back for more . You can say I love my Ruger revolvers.

My second handgun, traded my first a PPK, for it back in the 80’s this Ruger started my collection of many Rugers

I've had one with the 2 3/4 inch barrel that I should be beaten for selling, and a 4 inch heavy barrel stainless one that I bought in 1982, and still have. Both have had well over 10,000 rounds through them and still are just as tight as when new. The stainless one has had a steady diet of hot magnum loads, been carried creek wading in my back pocket while spending a considerable amount of time submerged, but still looks and operates like new. I loved that they could be completely disassembled, unlike the current crop of Ruger revolvers.

My first six gun was a 6" Security Six. That was in 1992. Over the last twenty years I have added a snub Speed Six, the only one in stainless that I own, and finally added a Service Six in 38 special, with a 4" barrel. The last belonged to a friend who has passed away and was his service piece in the Air Force. It has the US in a circle that denotes US property during the 1970's. All three are wonderful to shoot and I still use them. I might add that only the Service Six has no box. I got the original boxes for the first two.

My very first gun 69.95 1976 brand new. I have the 2 3/4 all SS one. Still have it with the box and all paper work, even the Ruger plastic bag.

I remember when my Dad brought the 4" stainless home in the mid 70's. He said ruger advertised you could leave the pistol in water for a year and all you had to do was clean it change the stock and all the springs and it would function normally again. He laughed and got a kick out of that. Lost Dad a few years ago and now its my only large caliber revolver in my collection. It looks brand-new just like the day Dad got it, and we shot it a lot. I had two of the Police Service Six, which was the fixed sight version of the Security Six. Still have one 40 years later and it's still a great gun. They have a lousy trigger. A trigger job, Hogue combat grips and a red ramp sight are all that have been done to mine

Recently bought a speed six in blue in great condition for 600$ serial number -1974 It was a friend of mines and I've been wanting it forever.

Mine was issued to me used in 1988 in the PA State Police. Ours were 4-inch stainless with adjustable sights. In the Academy we had to clean them to squeaky shinny perfection after each shooting. Have this revolver to this day.

I remember The RUC police force carrying Ruger Revolvers in Northern Ireland, right up to about twelve years or so ago when they finally adopted, The Glock. It had changed it`s name by then of course to the PSNI. The Police service of Northern Ireland But the Ruger had served them well, for many years, alongside the Mini 14.

In 1977 I purchased a Ruger Security Six and also Had a Service Six. Low priced compared to the Colts/and Smith's. Both weapons were exceptional and hard to put down for a wheel gun. Your right that most Police departments carried a revolver which if my memory serves me mainly were S&W .357...Alas though along with my Mini-14 and my Colt Python all are just a memory. I still have the Dan Wesson's .357 along with Tarus .44 mag..Still love the wheel gun feel.

I have a stainless steel Ruger security 6 bicentennial model manufactured obviously in 1976. It's all original. It has written on it made in the 200 th year of American Liberty.

US Marines carried this exact weapon on US Embassy Duty in the late 70’s through early 80’s.

I am in the "love em' " group. If you do decide to get into them they changed the grip slightly beginning with the 151- prefix in the serial number. The earlier grips are very hard to find. The Smith 19 is prettier but I love the SIX.

I was a peace officer in the 80s and 90s and started off in law enforcement using "wheelguns." I had a Smith and Wesson Model 66 and a Ruger Security Six. We had some goofy rules on the department I served on. The Security Six wasn't an "authorized duty weapon" for us, (with some exceptions) so I couldn't use it on regular patrol duty, but in spite of that, I could get away with shooting my quarterly qualification scores for record with one. I did that because MY Security Six was more accurate than MY Model 66 was with the range ammo we used. It was easier for me to shoot accurately, too, because it weighed a little more and the grip shape fit my hand much better. When we went to the Beretta 92F at work, my .38/.357 Magnum revolvers became "civilian use only." For me, the Security Six was far more "useful" recreationally. With lower-powered .38 Special, it and I were accurate enough to head-shoot rabbits with. With full-throttle .357 Magnum, I had enough "juice" for close-range blacktail deer. To me, it seemed better at handling .357 Magnum than my Model 66 was. I have no idea how many rounds of ammo I've shot through mine but it's been A LOT, as it has always been one of the firearms I shoot and use the most recreationally. It still looks and shoots like new. I don't know that I'd ever buy another one, as I already have one, but I'll not be parting with the one I've got.

I have the 2 3/4 inch stainless version. It is one the best shooting handguns I have ever fired.

I carried a Security 6 back in the day, I wish I still had it.

Bought my Ruger Security 6, 357, in 1979 while stationed in Alaska. Mainly as a carry weapon while out fishing or as a back up while hunting. Primarily have fed it 158 grain wad cutters when out in the bush but .38 the rest of the time. Gun still works like a dream and had a 6" barrel. The only thing I changed on it was the grips and I went to Pakmayer because they fit my hand better. It still one of my favorites but I have to admit I am a Ruger fan from way back and love the fit of the weapon in my hand.

As an old timer in law enforcement this was my first duty weapon later moved on to the Glock 17.

Those first models security six , speed six and service six were the best double action line that Ruger ever had in my opinion and I have owned S&W revolvers the ease of maintaining these revolvers are unsurpassed Ruger wrote the book of simplicity and durability of the double action revolver.

I bought my new Security Six, blue, 6", in 1973 from a sporting goods store in Long Beach, California for $143 out the door. It has been a fun gun to shoot over the years and it will go down to my son when the time comes. I have never stripped the gun and I had no idea how easy it comes apart. Thanks for the tutorial.

Back when I was a Navy MP back in the 90’s we carried the Ruger Service 6 in 38 Special. For 4 years I never fail to qualify expert with my Ruger. The trigger was like silk in double action, so I went out and found a Ruger Security 6 stainless with a 6 inch barrel, that one also had a very smooth double action trigger. Like a fool I traded it for a S&W model 13 4 inch . To this day I regret that trade so much 😔
