I feel so sorry for people in UK for not having 3 phase in their homes. Being able to charge your car up to 3x faster is a nice thing to have. Here, domestic 3 phase socket can supply 7kW at just 10A using a 5x1.5mm cable, which uses 40% less copper than 3x4mm minimal for 32A installation, and 2x less than 3x6mm recommended.

Also helps to balance the network, maybe the UK government should be investing in upgrading everyone supply to 3 phase instead of pipes for Hydrogen which will never happen.
@deang5622
@deang5622 6 ай бұрын
@@liberatodelgreco4430No it doesn't help to balance the network. Firstly most loads are genuinely not 3 phase: they are single phase connected across a 3 phase supply. And that is true for EV chargers. Second there is no control over who has 3 phase chargers, neither the quantity or what power dissipation they are or where they are geographically. Given this, it is not possible to balance the network with them. The balancing that is undertaken in the network is done through feeding different streets, different sides of the street from different phases from the distribution transformer.

While I agree with your points, the advantage is we have lower cost solar inverter/battery systems that can easily, and economically, cover 100% of a homes load. I'd rather a 100A single phase supply found in many British homes than some of the sketchy 16A supplies I've found in holiday rentals across europe. I'd still like 3 phase for my EV charger though!
@edc1569
@edc1569 6 ай бұрын
@@liberatodelgreco4430 It doesn't really help balance the network as phases are rotated, this is done at a charge point level as a lot of cars, often hybrids, with type 2 don't actually have 3 phase on-board chargers. It is a little more efficient maybe a couple of percent due to the effective higher voltage - anyone done any studies on this?

Heat pumps and EV's feature in the massive disinformation campaigns being use by big oil/gas who are facing existential crisis if net zero is anywhere near achieved. Energy pricing structure in the UK is also still crazy. It acts as a direct disincentive to use electricity. Renewable energy price is locked to gas price and also carbon taxes are placed only on electricity but not on gas making electricity 4 times the price of gas per kWh. This suits both the renewable sector which gets higher revenues, and the gas generation sector which guarantees an above market energy price. The consumer is the one that loses.
@doublehaven
@doublehaven 6 ай бұрын
Heat pumps might be four times as efficient but the cost of electricity outside of off peak is currently at least four times the price of gas so the claims of money saving for heat pumps are not there for most. Given they are much more expensive than gas boilers and can only be made viable with a Government Grant it's not really a surprise that the majority of the public don't believe the hype. In the cold weather there is less heat to extract from the air and that's when it's needed most. Ground source is not an option for most. They are not generally compatible with microbore pipework either, there are many 1970s and 1980s houses with this and a re-pipe is very disruptive. Also don't forget that your heat pump is very likely to be powered by a gas power station in the middle of winter on a cold still day when there is no solar or wind.

1) If you have any solar, or battery storage you can start shifting the numbers in your favour over gas. 2) That gas burnt in the peaker plant is still delivering more heat into your house than if you were burning it in your boiler. I do think we need some joined up thinking from the government, there needs to be a serious build out of generation infrastructure.

I've had a 7kw ASHP since last March. there's no hype, they work as well as claimed.. it draws about 3.5kw when it's around freezing outside, less when it's not as cold. House temperature set at 20C and keeps the house a lovely constant temp . So you have to count how many sub freezing temp days you expect over the year for worst case. Also I have a storage battery so that runs the heating until mid morning cheaply. Hot water is done cheap too, intelligent Go gives you 6 hrs at 7.5p / unit. Octopus Cosy gives you two periods of cheaper power but Go is good for me. With solar pv it's even better as you can usually top up battery or hot water during the day.

While the first item of news sounds somewhat positive, I have concerns that businesses have now simply moved the cost of the transformer upgrade at the DNO from their own business expense to that borne of the British public's utility bill. I think my ultimate problem with it is that its encouraging people to charge their car at work instead of over night at their own home. Charging overnight at home means less demand on the grid (flattening the duck curve) and less requirement for such a aggressive expansion of the grid. Charging at work has some positives though, I will admit, and it does give lots of people security in the knowledge that they have another guaranteed place to charge and encourages the adoption of EV's across the broader public. I simply think it would be better to have more night time charging tariffs and EV charger incentives.

I have an EV van. Its just the same except it cheap to run. I plug it in once a week and it charges when i sleep. 209 miles cost £8. I'm not on a cheap EV tariff either. Dalkin heat pumps are silent, other cheaper HP'S or badly installed ones do vibrate. Its all about a good planned installation and quality workmanship. Why is everyone so against new technology - stop believing what you read and try it yourself.

They can install as many super chargers as they like but the grid will not be able to cope, so therefore no advancement, even the 10 minutes charging is too long when you can fill up in half the time and give yourself twice and in some cases three times the range at an ICE petrol /diesel fuel station.

Re heat pump noise I'm not convinced. There was a case in Norfolk reported last week where a council fitted heat pumps to a school, gave itself planning permission afterwards, and now has the neighbours complaining about the noise to their MP. At a school there should be room to fit the pumps well over a metre from the property boundary so if that's an issue on a site like that think what it will be like in a densely packed urban environment like my first starter home.

@@efixx just to add a different point of view, we had a heat pump installed earlier this year, and it has been great. We had about a week of disruption (we had microbore pipe everywhere, and while it could apparently have worked with that I wanted it to be as efficient as possible, so we had all the pipework changed and new rads fitted), but now it is in we've found it to be much more comfortable than the old gas boiler because the heat is constant all the time, not on and off like the gas boiler was. Noise wise most of the time it is hardly audible, certainly quieter than the fountain in our garden pond! It was working a bit harder last week when it was -4 here and the pump kept the house temperature at a consistent 20, but even then it really wasn't noisy - no way our neighbours would be able to hear it even if they were in their back gardens at -4 degrees in the middle of the night 🤣🤣🤣

@@efixx A view of the live Gridwatch site shows that "Renewables" (wind, solar, hydro and contentious biomass - tree burning) rarely exceeds 50% of generated capacity over the year. For "Carbon Neutral" (wind, solar, hydro and nuclear), peaks of 60-70% are reached. Across the year, the lion's share of English power generation continues to be CCGT - combined cycle gas turbine. My current place still has 'old fashioned' electric storage heaters - but I haven't switched them on for 3 years and just wear more clothes!
