Learn rumba columbia patterns in this video lesson. Columbia is a fast rumba, in a triple-pulse (6/8, 12/8) structure, and often accompanies the standard bell pattern struck on a guataca ('hoe blade') or campana. Columbia originated in the hamlets, plantations, and docks where men of African descent worked together.
Latin Percussion LP City Wood Congas 10" & 11" Set: amzn.to/1Uz3kQK
Columbia originated from the drum patterns and chants of religious Cuban Abakuá traditions. The drum patterns of the lowest conga drum is essentially the same in both columbia and Abakuá. Instructor Edgardo Cambon will be covering three columbia rhythms known as Matanzas, Habana and Ñongo (aka "del campo" or "del monte").

So far loving this course.Already completed a bongo course of dance papi that put my bongo technique a long way.In the middle of this conga course.The teaching is broken down to learn a rhythm in stages.Something to sink my teeth into.Originally I am a drummer,I much love percussion now.The other courses on this channel will keep me busy as well.A learning journey and adventure.

Hello my friend, I just want you to know that I truly enjoy your lessons and your profession and detail. Playing these rhythms on these instruments is more difficult than I had imagined, but it is so enjoyable to hear these rhythms and to appreciate the timings and skills it takes to master them. Thank you again and I hope life is good to you and your loved ones. God Bless You.

Love it. For me that space on the bar 2 creates an anticipated bear which I’ve always loved. Of course for those that already know it it’s expected. On that note I’m reminded of how Jerry Gonzalez took his solos with Cunjunto Libre at Central Park NY where we jammed at the fountain in the 70’s. Thanks for the great breakdown.

Thanks. I learned Matanzas style in Matanzas at a drum workshop with AfroCuba and Munuquitos in the late 90’s but when I got back to NewOrleans I was hearing Havana style and got very confused. They would also play rumba clave plus the short bell pattern with Columbia which really made my head spin.

Just to clarify something I feel is a bit confusing to many. 6/8 means six eight notes or corcheas per compass, first number is the amount of notes per compass while second number is the value of each note. Example: 4/4 means four notes of quarter note or negras value. Also 6/8 can be counted a 123,123, making it a bit easier than 123456.
@rob26b

Hi. When you play the heel-toe technique, does the heel happen on the downbeat (for example the 1) and the toe happens on the off-beat (the AND of 1)? Or is the heel-toe happen only on the downbeat as a quick movement and only counted on the 1? Also on a 6/8 rhythm where would the heel fall in the rhythm and the tip?

@@Eddysuconga Hey Edgardo, Rob Holland here, long time Bro! Good to see you! About the bell name, My dad, Milt Holland traveled, to Africa lot for drumming and came back with one of the names for the bell pattern, “Ácha” , but he said it was played so much everywhere and it must have had different names in different places. By the way, I learned a rumba Columbia that came from Pablo Moso quite a few years ago when he was in the group “Skins”, if I recall correctly, and they mixed dulple and triple meter parts, the way we are on the old mango Santa Maria albums. If you want some time I’m happy to share it with you.

Sdo you.tune the drums to notes? Masterly presentation.
@Eddysuconga
@Eddysuconga 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, sometimes I tune to specific notes, but most times I tune by ear. Generally starting in C-440 (middle C) and the lower drum, a third or a fifth below. But frankly: I am not too picky... My tuning depends on many things, like If I am playing with a Salsa Band, or Folklore music, or a Pop band, etc etc.
@elkunchwar
@elkunchwar 4 жыл бұрын
May be your ears are so trained that you automatically tune to root key(s) of the main performer.... Why I asked is because Indian drum (tabla, dholak etc.) players are very particular about the sharp drum tuning. The base (dagga) is tuned with ear.. In this video the sharp (middle) drum sounds in perfect tune. That is why the curiosity. May be you upload a video on this topic with tuned and untuned drums and with a guitarist/ soloist in company... Am I askiing for too much?
@Eddysuconga
@Eddysuconga 4 жыл бұрын
Rishikesh Elkunchwar , I have been told by my fellow musicians in my band, that I have “perfect pitch”... Sometimes I ask my piano player to play middle “C” on his piano for reference. I will try to make a video on tuning, maintenance and taking care of your drums. But the likely of doing a video with other artist is small, as everybody I would consider to do such a video with me is very busy. But in my website: www.musicandela.com there are many videos of me playing with various ensembles and bands. Thanks for your comments. Edgardo
