I have been using a variation of this - I call it the shifting two and shifting four. Same steady weak hand pattern but shift where you place/start your double stroke and four stroke with strong hand. It’s building on the independence quality of the exercise. And then reverse hand duties for balance.

I would demonstrate the 6/8 bell pattern and play the pulse with the foot and clap the hands simultaneously before getting into any patterns. The student needs to internalize, know where the one is. For beginners knowing where to come in on the one is difficult with 6/8 as well as not drifting in time.

Eric, thank u. Have taken about a 20 yr. hiatus to drumming/ in my late 60’s & with covid 19 & health issues I find myself home more than ever before / have a 20 piece PEARLDRUM SET that has been in storage / no room / always loved congas / timbales/ bongos. So I’ve been thinking of starting with bongos & working my way up to congas if my interest holds true. Anyway, thank you for ur vids / need to go buy some bongos so I can start practicing/ better late than never lol 😂 wats a good brand ( starting point). Thanks again Eric. WILLY CA. 🦅🏍⚒☠️⚡️🌎🇺🇸🥁😎

With all due respect the first exercise is not as easy and simple as you indicate in the video. I've played congas for decades in my own "style" but have decided to learn the correct manner in which to play them. The overhead camera is very helpful; however, if you could slow down as you introduce the exercise(s) it would be greatly appreciated especially before you speed up to the correct rhythm. I sincerely want to learn what you're teaching but am struggling as it's too fast. Appreciate all of your time and effort.
