We are aiming to interest you in many different genres and techniques of dancing. Cuban Rumba and in particular guaguanco is one of the most complex styles, considering both the music aspect and the dance.
This is the first class of the series. We will build it up over time.

I have been searching for dedicated Rumba classes on and offline for years because thats the only way I can master a style. Sporadic onetime workshops, or odd you tube videos here and there never worked for me. Anyway now I have. You are filling a major gap in the online market place. After an initial explanation If you can make another one where we can just practice with 'music only' with you. that would be the tops. 'Muchas Gracias' :)

Hi, I am so sorry it takes me forever to reply to comments these days. Real life is slowing down my KZfaq activity. Thank you for all your comments, I read them all (even the last one that was somehow removed, probably by YT because of the external link, but a copy of it came to my email). I am really glad you are enjoying our videos. I completely agree, that there is a big gap on the market when it comes to afro-Cuban dancing. People are joining workshops and festivals, but there is a lack of general understanding of basic concepts. Our goal was to show them to people, and then with this knowledge and a bit of experience you will be able to interpret afro performances and demos by yourself and learn from people a lot better than us. We have done actually a few videos, in which we practice rumba a lot with music. Initially when we started recording for KZfaq I struggled to find good "rumba rhythmical loops", but our newer videos have always a bit more extended practice part. Check out guaguanco drills and rumba columbia and men styling series. Answering also your last comment from our podcast - you are correct, that I cut into thoughts of my guests. I am aware of it and I am working on it :) Sometimes it's very difficult to balance the conversation. If I let them talk freely the video would last for an hour or longer and we would drift far away from the original topic :) Especially, when I speak to Vlad. He is a fantastic storyteller. One day I will invite him to tell the story of his life (as a musician and also a Latin person living in Europe) and then I will let him say whatever he wants :) Thanks again for your kind comments and suggestions. I will try to apply them in the future videos.

I love rumba, the fluidity, the earthy pull, the drums, the mix of love and duel. But figuring out out how they do it, well, it's not easy. I'm having a party with you tonight, doing ALL of your guaguanco sessions. It might be helpful to see and hear the instruments you talk about. What is the carrots one??? - that sounds like 'kata'?
@LaSuerteDanceSchool
@LaSuerteDanceSchool 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, I just read your other comment, so I imagine you know now what is cata. From rumba point of view cata is probably the easiest instrument to listen, when you are looking for the rhythm. When you listen to commercial songs you will also notice it is usually the loudest instrument.

The whole point of learning the rumba is not to be able to apply it to salsa only my friend. The whole point is actually dancing rumba!

It seems worth mentioning-- this video, and almost all of La Suerte's fantastic material-- is starting on the Lead (left) foot. As much as I love doing these videos, I have had to start going contrary (which gets really confusing sometimes) because when I was dancing, what did I do? Style on the lead-- which made for some reaaaaaallly interesting (euphemistic) dances because the leads were like - okaaaay- and I would have to figure out how to get myself back to follow footing/timing. So, if anyone out there is listening - feel free to include follow footwork/timing/styling anytime. Thanks and LOVE this group.

Hi Melissa! It is quite easy to convert the styling which starts on the left foot on 1 to the 'women's step'. We can do a video on this to explain :) One of the easiest ways it to do an extra step on 8, so then the left foot is free for 1 and then to go back to the 'women's rhythm' do an extra step on 8 and then the right foot is free. i hope this makes sense :)

hello! maybe I'm wrong but I've been watching Cuban rumba dance for many years and I'm a native of Cuba, I see that they are starting the clave in 2 with the left foot and 3 in the right. I have learned it just the other way around. Begin clave 2 with the right and clave 3 with the left. 😉😊 Now you have questioned me... hehe how it would be correct, or is it accepted in both ways?Thank you very much and sorry for my english 🙏🙏😊

There is no preference for which foot to start with in Guaguancó. You should really learn to do most moves either starting with your left or right. Another difference with Casino, NY/LA Salsa or Son etc. is that it is acceptable to switch for starting on left to starting on right in the middle of dancing by reusing the same foot twice in a row. You do not want to do that a lot, as it will break up the flow, but Rumberos / Rumberas from Cuba do this also.
