Күн бұрынI am not sure we can call this class a "beginners" class anymore. We are responding to your requests and here comes a video explaining the fundamentals of upper body movement in rumba guaguanco.
We are aiming to interest you in many different genres and techniques of dancing. Cuban Rumba and in particular guaguanco is one of the most complex styles, considering both the music aspect and the dance.

In all of Latin America, in mid 1800s, Polish Mazurek + Redowa became popular, + English longways country dance, 2 French qyadrilles, Czech polka, schottische, etc. Mazurek called mazurca, is still slightly popular in Martinique of France, & 1 part if Mexico ( even some parts), even a few places in Philippines in SE Asia.

Really enjoy your tutorials. I live in Ecuador and learning Rumba here is tough. We are very limited to Salsa. I have a question from your tutorial. You say the rib cage comes forward on 1, 3, 5, and 7, right? Does the rib cage come forward at the same time that the arms extend? It feels a little awkward. I thought the ribcage came in when the arms extended. Do I need to change my coordination? Did I explain myself correctly?

In general in all afro - Cuban dances it is important to develop the grove / pulse (usually the downbeat), and usually, it comes from the rib cage. The basic movement changes when you want to accent or do something extra, but it should be relatively consistent, and in rumba rib cage pulse is definitely forward. There are some afro dances that the rib cage groove is "inside" i.e. chango or ogun, but in rumba it's out :)

Mine used to too. Then I had a lesson from a Cuban diva who fixed it. I was standing too upright, too much like salsa, with my bum kind of pointing back. She changed this posture to be more afro, the whole torso softly rounded forwards, shoulders too, bum tucked in a little more. Anyway that worked for me.

uh oh - I commented before watching the lesson and it looks as if I'm completely wrong - they poke the bum back and it looks excellent. I am sorry! SO hard to itemise this complex movement. But I'm sure it shouldn't hurt.
