After hearing all their influences, it's easy to see why I like them so muc, we have a lot of similar likes and inspirations. RatM, Suicide, Gang of Four, The Road Warriors, The Mars Volta. These guys are so good

This was me in the 1990s growing up on RATM, Deftones , tool, NIN, korn, cypress hill, dre, System of a Down etc etc - one of the best lollas I saw was korn, System of a Down, tool and snoop dog - then the 2007/ rock the Bells LA and SF shows were straight up legit. Public Enemy, cypress hill and so many more ....I flew from Singapore and spent 2 weeks in California.

For some reason watching El-P being reverential when talking about the Melvins gave me goosebumps. I love the Melvins and i know for a lot of people they are an acquired taste.

Without knowing that El-P liked metal, I always thought his production was the type of production a metalhead would do if they were working in hop hop.

See the Melvins live when you can. It's always an experience; the way they build a set, the way it flows, if you're a music fan you have to witness it.

'Chasin' down that hard moment'. I listen to ALL kinds of music and there are these 'hard moments' all over the place. Rap, dub and metal give more than most. Just discovered these guys and they've renewed my faith in rap. Their music has found it's time.

El-P even worked with Justin Broadrick on an industrial project. Broadrick is as heavy as it gets.

I've been a lover of metal and hip hop since 1987. Discovered it all at age 11 through some older lads and used to go watch the DJ battles at the local record store, face squished against the glass because I was too scared to go in. Also bear in mind that was in South Wales. Hip hop spread really quickly to the UK and there was a thriving b-boy culture in every little backwater town, even if it was just a few mates with a boom box and a copy of a copy. It was also thanks to this music that I learned of the American civil rights movement and had my eyes opened to the way humans can treat each other. Metal was the perfect counterpoint to that. I cut my teeth in Queen then guns n roses and iron maiden, quickly going to megadeth and Metallica then grunge in the early 90s. Then a decade of the most incredible music from both genres, particularly metal which just opened up sonically and went fucking mental. The two meeting was inevitable with the likes of Rage, the Judgment Night soundtrack, Bodycount and public enemy were sampling slayer in the late 80s on she watches channel zero, ahead of the curve as ever. Unfortunately both genres now suffer with weak mainstream acts but there's still as much good music in both as there ever was, you just have to look for it (which is now super easy, thanks interwebs)

Deftones, one of my favorite bands ever. I'd say second favorite after Tool. Nothing in any genre I've listened to has gotten close to what that music has offered me. It's past music. Literally is. Too long to explain but the Tool fans know what I mean. They created something bigger than a band.

Its interesting because the great musicians always give kudos to other genres and influences outside of the intended genre. You can't put yourself in a box and you have to be open minded with it comes to creativity.

One of the first concerts I ever saw as a kid was Anthrax with Public Enemy. Huge Metal/Hip Hop fan ever since that show.

I continually say there is a connection between hip hop and metal. There's something there. I just need a better way to articulate it. But there's a reason these guys like Waka Flaka are into bands like Lamb of God. It's a different kind of heavy, but it's still there. Are the lyrics for some of these new guys the best or kind of stupid? Yeah, but there's some stupid punk lyrics too. Things evolve. These new guys are punk and thrash will come soon. RTJ is just their own thing though. If you haven't heard El-P's Fantastic Damage, do yourself a favor and listen to it.

I love both hip hop and metal, RTJ is one of my favorite groups out there atm, I got to see them twice last year. The appeal that caught me when I first heard them was the visceral tone. While still hip hop, it reminded me of metal because of how aggressive and in your face it was and I’d have to say RTJ2 is up there on my favorite albums of all time lists

Another place to look for that good OG rap connection to metal is on the early Cypress Hill records, especially Black Sunday. DJ Muggs worshiped that dark, moody, noisy, psychedelic aesthetic that Black Sabbath represented.

Sometimes when I listen to music I just want it to be heavy: overwhelming yet exhilarating, a release of tension and a rush of new energy at once. These guys do it for me. RATM, Deftones, NIN for sure. Guess that doesn't make me a very tasteful or intellectual listener, but you can't deny power when you hear it and feel it. Digging For Windows goes so hard. When I got into RATM I discovered that song, but now I'm getting into RTJ and it makes sense that El produced the track.

As a devout hip-hop head, I vouch for this. I fucks with metal HEAVY. To me hip-hop is an extension of metal and metal is an extension of hip-hop.

As someone who gained an initial appreciation for music by way of 70s rock and 80s metal, I can say that I have always heavily appreciated rap lyrics and beats.

Grew up on both hip hop/rap and rock/metal. Huge fan of both and i kinda see the connection between them. It's not an obvious one but it's there. Maybe it's just my upbringing. But i know for sure, i'll always remeber the first time my dad showed me Van Halen- eruption and the first time my brother showed me Wu tang clan- CREAM.

Judgement Night Soundtrack, circa 1993. Huge names in hiphop doing tracks with metal stars. Mediocre film, but a fantastic soundtrack album. Blew my mind back then and I still stick that album on regularly. First heard El-P on a record by Brighton electonic duo Evil Nine in 2009ish and thought the guy was absolutely stellar back then and you could sense the metal vibes through the lyrics and delivery. Fast forward and he and RTJ exploded. The boys don't just love hip hop, they love music.

The synergy and appreciation amongst all of my favorite bands gives me a sense of vindication for the choices I've made. I appreciate the shit out of this video...

Killer Mike's getting those grays in his beard! Run the Jewels had the most crowd surfing I have seen at any concert, including all of the metal shows I've been to. Crazy show, go see them live. Some well dressed hipster crowd surfed on stage and Killer Mike commented about how it was the first time he had seen someone crowdsurf in hard bottom shoes. Great bunch of guys. RTJ played before NIN at Aftershock, and I was at first a bit confused, like "What's a hip hop group doing at Aftershock?" I had heard of them, but not really listened to them, but once they took the stage, it made total sense. Now I am a big RTJ fan and I am so glad they are bringing hip hop back to what it used to be.

There's been a crossover between hardcore metalheads and hardcore hip hop heads for a looooong fucking time. It's something you easily pick up on if you're heavily into either genre or talk to someone from the opposite camp and realize how much you relate to them. Love of metal is why I have a love for hip hop, and it's vice versa for allot of hip hop heads who find love in metal.

I read a long time ago the el-p was obsessed with blade runner and authors like Philip K Dick, i think thats where that sharp, rigid, futuristic sound comes from. I've been a fan since like 97 when company flow opened up for the beastie boys at the electric factory in Philly where he basically got booed off the stage. It's amazing to see the evolution from then to now. How can you not love these 2, greatest hip hop duo ever

i literally gave Slayer a shot because of hip hop super producer Rick Rubin and the fact they had albums on Def Jam Records. If not i would've only known Raining Blood. Slayer is easily one of my fav bands outta any genre of music ever. And im a young old-head, born in the 80s.
