On this episode of People's Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with musician, rapper, songwriter, record producer, record executive, and icon of the underground, El-P. They dig into a wide range of subjects -- including El-P's signature "noisy" production style, how Run The Jewels with Killer Mike came into existence, Zack De La Rocha living at El-P's house after Rage Against Machine broke up, and what led to the breakup of El-P's own group, Company Flow, around the same time.
Later Talib and El-P trade their stories on how they got signed to Rawkus Records -- the mecca of the underground scene in the late 90's. El-P also opens up about his song "Last Good Sleep," which outlines his own experiences dealing with domestic violence as a child. His record label Def Jux is also discussed, as well as what we can expect for his up and coming album "Run The Jewels 4" with Killer Mike.
The whole interview is filled with moments that are insightful, introspective, and often hilarious. (You have to see El-P's Björk joke.)

Interview Timing:
1:47 -- Talib reminisces on blazing a blunt with El-P at the late 90's Gavin Convention event in San Diego. El-P responds with concerns about early-onset dementia.
5:19 -- El-P explains the origins of his unique production style, finding its roots in the sounds of the city. He also gives his take on "old New York" vs. "new New York".
7:57 -- El-P speaks on meeting Killer Mike, which quickly turned into them forming their group Run The Jewels and connecting over shared influences like Ice Cube and Run DMC.
10:55 -- Talib asks El-P about Zack De La Rocha living at his house in Brooklyn after disbanding from Rage Against Machine. (The tracks they recorded are still not available to the public.)
13:20 -- El-P talks about he and Killer Mike finding their shared vision for what would be Run The Jewels' political angle.
16:01 -- Talib asks El-P if the testosterone-driven sound of his music is intentional. El-P opens up about the multiple lanes that Run The Jewels takes on lyrical content, evenly balancing politics and comedy.
20:28 -- Talib shares the first time he met Killer Mike, and dubs El-P The Björk of hip-hop. El-P speaks on growing up listening to film scores and mentions the soundtrack he did for a yet to be released movie called "Fonzo" starring Tom Hardy as Al Capone.
23:46 -- Talib asks El-P why his group Company Flow broke up after one album. El-P gives some detailed history on the group's early start -- sending their CD's through the Tower Records mail room while employed there.
29:46 -- Talib asks El-P if he ever felt any level of competition with him at Rawkus Records, both being members of leading acts there, even though they were worlds apart in the sonic sense. They trade stories of getting signed to Rawkus and zone in on its role as the main conduit in rolling out the late 90's independent hip-hop scene to the masses.
40:52 -- Jasmin brings up El-P's mentioning of liking to do things that scare him creatively and asks him what his next venture is on that front.
43:06 -- El-P reflects on his father's occupation as a lounge jazz musician, playing passionately with sometimes little to no applause. He tells how that visual never let him forget the love of music always comes paramount over anything else.
49:13 -- Talib asks El-P if he ever felt obligated to address race issues in his music. El-P wonders how people can be fans of hip-hop, but not be empathetic to the black experience.
1:01:52 -- El-P opens up about the lyrics to his powerful song with Company Flow titled "Last Good Sleep", stemming from his own personal experiences with domestic violence as a child.
1:09:23 -- El-P fills us in on how he came up with his name, then speaks on his record label Def Jux that he co-founded in '99, expanding on how the attention that it received didn't necessarily reflect the project's original intentions.
1:14:34 -- Talib asks El-P about self-care now, after years of not being a priority. He also talks about Mac Miller reaching out to collaborate a year before his passing and Talib asks El-P if he has any veteran advice for young emcees coming up.
1:18:11 -- El-P gives us insight into the next Run The Jewels project "RTJ4" and leaves everyone hyped for its release.
1:20:53 -- Jasmin puts El-P on the spot by asking about his stance on the upcoming presidential election. He conveys in detail how Killer Mike helped clarify his own participation in the political process.

El-P is the real deal. I've been to hundreds of shows and he's one of the few that really amazed me after-the-fact by just schmoozing with fans a bit in a way that felt incredibly genuine. Sounds dorky, but I'll never forget his attitude that night. Edit: This was in fucking IOWA no less. The thing people not from the midwest don't realize is that we KNOW we're from the midwest. We're not naive. We like good music too. When people like El-P show us love, it means that much more.

Great interview Kweli. I actually met EL-P back during a "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" tour show in Gainesville, FL. Pretty down to earth guy. I got a picture with him and an autograph for my Funcrusher Plus album copy. I still remember shaking his hand and saying "Thanks for all the music. Best of luck in everything you do. And best of luck with your label.". I could see on his face that the label comment registered as an empty compliment (He wasn't angry. He just sighed and said "Thanks".). I then shortly found out that Definitive Jux was to shut down. I also remember seeing Beezy from DEHH waiting for his turn in line behind me and EL complimenting their show (I had no idea about DEHH at the time). Good to see EL is still doing good after all these years (Healthwise, and musicially). Definitely looking forward to RTJ 4.

I met El-P in 2011 in Brooklyn. He was with Killer Mike. This is before RTJ and even RAP Music. I had no idea why they were hanging out but that was the beginning of a major run for both artists. These dudes are so much of an influence on my growing up. I'm from ATL so I could have only dreamed Killer Mike would join all this later. Rawkus changed my life man. I'm not a rapper, DJ, anything, but that shit made me move to NYC with no job. I just wanted to be in the city and to be around people like this. Rage Against the Machine was my bigtime mind changing group growing up. Their first self titled album & DJ Shadow's Endtroducing are still my favorite albums ever made. When Zack appeared and dropped that shit on Lyricist Lounge it was so amazing to send me more into that world. It was the cross between both worlds for me. I always knew Zack worked with Roni Size, Shadow, El-P back then and only a few songs got out and I always wish I could have heard more. Props to Talib for asking that question. I grew up in ATL on 'Kast, Goodie Mob, Field Mob, LaFace Records, etc all that while also being obsessed with the 8 Steps to Perfection buggin' like Rwanda type NYC backpacker scene made Run The Jewels turn into the craziest group. In my imagination they'd only get together if I won the lottery and put that shit together lol. I may not always agree Talib but I'll always respect his opinions. I love how relevant El-P has always been. To me he's the Trent Reznor or Maynard James Keenan of hip hop, love it or hate you still have to respect it.

@@kevinscott59 I was born and live in Birmingham so all that dense dark energy is very much part of the vibe here! Our city is ugly as sin so music is an escape from the post industrial bleak landscape. That said I love my city! I also love that music can be so particular but also so universal.

papanovembermusic That's dope. Not enough people take into account how the physical character of a town effects artists. I'm from Atlanta which has a ton of trees, and I remember Outkast talking about how that impacted the Dungeon Family sound. I think Black Sabbath are also from Birmingham.I remember Ozzy talking about the effects of the bleak industrial landscape on their music. Some of my favorite artists out the UK also included Throbbing Gristle(from Manchester),Test Dept.,Crass,Coil,Current 93 and Nurse With Wound.(Mostly cats from different parts of London.)

I have really enjoyed RTJs run, and it has been exciting to see his progression. I'm just now ready for another EL-P solo record. With him saying his heart was broken when things fell apart with Coflow, it probably was not as much as all the fans, Coflow was a cult classic in the indie scene. I feel if Coflow were to release an album today (highly unlikely) it would probably be one of the biggest releases of all time in his catelog hands down.

Great interview, thank you for sharing this conversation. Last Good Sleep is super powerful, it is interesting that he revisited that idea again later with Stepfather Factory. I started following El-P due to his super densely layered production style, still to this day there are only handful who create such deep musical landscapes and even fewer who do it right...then he lays these heavy conversations on top of all that with just enough humor interlaced so that you don't lose all hope.
