This idea is so simple, but it's so much fun and so beneficial that you have to give it a try as soon as you get a chance, especially if you're still working on your jibe or tack.
You simply run around your transition in a big space. Optionally, you can take a piece of rope or a long extension cord like I did, and create a 180° semicircle to follow as you run around your transition. This allows you to concentrate on your wing handling, as you make a nice even arc all the way around your transition. It also trains you to always keep your eyes on your intended path that you're going to take your board through. I'm going to use this more dynamic method for recommending land practice in all my future videos!
For those of you that live in landlocked location, or somewhere it's still too cold to get out on the water, this is a perfect way to practice your transitions. Just take your wings to a local park or playing field, go to the downwind edge of it, set up and go!
It's helpful to think about the wing as having a flight path that follows a plan, rather than simply wing switch timing. The wing angle and heading are both significant throughout the turn.
This new dynamic approach to land practice allows you to experience the flight path of the wing as you will when you are on the water!
It's great exercise and a lot more fun than standing in one place. Maybe more people will actually do land practice with this method, for longer than 5 minutes!
