I'm a beginner but apparently I'm lucky enough to be carrying my kitefoiling & windsurfing skills forward to Winging because after 9 sessions I'm jibing consistently and can stay riding for very long stretches. Here is my problem, I'm a 74 year old construction worker with mildly arthritic knees and without switching feet my back knee takes more load stress leaving me with a long recovery after winging. Will your technique help lower the back foot loads?

Question: I am trying to get on foil but the board is not lifting up despite fairly good speed. The nose of the board is yawing back and forth. Do I need to be farther forward or farther back?

This video is so instructive! Thanks a bunch! Having that footage with you narrating what is going on helps a lot to understand what is going on. I've watched it a few times the part about pitching... I am learning to wing foil and am now focusing on the foiling part of it using a foil drive assist. I seem to have gotten it down, except that the board keeps pitching either up or down, and eventually that pitching knocks me down. Played with the mast back and forth and think I have it in the right spot, using your technique. Is pitching something you learn to control entirely based on skill? There isn't much written about it, and I have no clue what I am doing wrong. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Initially I was unsure about the rather 'Zen' like approach of this tutorial, But after watching, and properly listening. I think this is one of, if not the best 'Tacking' tutorials, that I have seen. Certainly answered all the questions I had regarding my slowing down, stalling, mid tack. (not enough front foot pressure , I think?) Thank you.

Thanks for the video. The force diagrams are great as they really aid in explaining what is happening before and during the glide, and why it's necessary to shift your weight during the glide. Too often we are only told the 'what' (as in what you need to do), the force diagrams help to explain the 'why'.

I have a fanatic sky air 5’10” pump up board that is impossible to get on the foil , so with your centre of gravity check I found the front of the board very very heavy with the mast all the way forward . I have checked the weight of the board and for water within all ok . Have also tried riding the board with my feet and weight back just goes unstable . Is it me or the board ! Have you any ideas to make it work

@@wingcoachdavid I'm at the point of working out foiling gybes. The "L" foot positioning transformed in about 10 minutes my control of carving S turns and altitude which was a very pleasant surprise. I had a great session using less effort with a straight front arm, and generally working on the skills such as gliding, carving and habit of looking where you are going. I just saw your video of using counter steer technique to initiate lean instead of using the wing.

You could say that. But the flight path the wing takes is pretty different. Here it just rotates on your shoulder, in the Heineken it spirals around your head in a big arc. At least that's the Heineken I know and love. Both are pretty great!🙂

I suppose that if one was going faster than the wind through the turn, the jibe would look a lot like this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p65ng6tq0NrPfI0.html ? Hey David. Thank you very much for the guidance. I have an off-topic question. One of the locations where I get in and out of the water the rocks under foot are painful even through my wetsuit booties. Do the five finger shoes that you are wearing give good protection to the soles of your feet? I see that some of the models come with a vibram sole. Thanks! The season is sputtering to life here in the SF Bay ; )

Excellent wisdom! Breaking down complex movements into their components helps to learn better and (probably) faster. Love the tie in to meditation/mindfulness and flow, that's one of the things I love most about wing foiling. Thank you!
@wingcoachdavid
@wingcoachdavid Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I think breaking down skills needed into easier to learn parts speeds learning. You build muscle memory that can be "remembered" more easily, because you are aware of that specific skill and your limb(s) roles in it, with less complications from other skills being learned at the same time, and less falls. It's cool you also like to get "into the zone!"

Would this work if your board has footstraps ?
@wingcoachdavid
@wingcoachdavid Жыл бұрын
I'm not so qualified to answer, as I don't use them yet. However I would think it would be possible with most boards to position the foot straps so they were over the balance point of the board.
@r55551
@r55551 Жыл бұрын
No it wouldn’t work with foot straps. With straps you have to move the foil until the lift point is under your feet.
@wingcoachdavid
@wingcoachdavid Жыл бұрын
Thanks Rod. I agree this could be the case for some foilboard designs. It depends on the proper placement of the strap inserts and which ones you have chosen to use. Someday I could follow up with another more in-depth video, to suggest how to find the best place to attach your straps, but I'm not "there" yet! Unfortunately, the "L" stance I teach isn't well supported by the insert placements I've ever seen come on a board. On my (new to me) sinker, I've had to use stick-on strap plates for the outer ends of the front straps. But again that's a discussion I'll engage in at another time!
@hoppline
@hoppline Жыл бұрын
@@wingcoachdavid Like David said, this method is a good starting point and works best without straps. If you have determined your center of gravity, start foiling without straps and carefully watch your foot position in various wind and swell positions. Learn what foot position works best for your and place your straps here. Now you can make adjustment according to the weather conditions by moving the foil again (as it is much harder to move the straps). The whole thing becomes a little more tricky when you start using different front wings. Just changing my stabilizer I will have to move my foil 6 cm (!!!) forward. So in the end, it's still a lot of trial and error.
@oliverpolden
@oliverpolden Жыл бұрын
My initial reaction was yes because I guess you want the balance point between the footstraps, but if you have two front footstraps then you would end up with the foil further forward than if you had one.
