Two things to be able to finish an ultra: 1) nutrition has to be calculated and followed 2) your body (and I mostly mean feet) need to hold up. Take care of your feet, always. Good socks. Good shoes. Lubrication and friction management. Golden rules. Loved the video by the way.

Yes it’s a big difference even when you take the itra measures for km equivalent. 100m elevation equals 1km. You don’t account for how technically challenging the trail might be. For example my next run is 58km with 400 of elevation which would be the equivalent of a 100k run
@timedwards19213 жыл бұрын
@@mattschm5486 Wow. Interesting to consider that way of calculating it. I am registered for a 52K with 3,500 meters of elevation gain. Might have to rethink that one.
@mattschm54863 жыл бұрын
@@timedwards1921 you might. In my very limited experience. If you do these mountain runs. You can’t really go by splits but you have to go by percieved extertion especially on technical terrain. Expect to need way longer than you would on a flat run. You probably need to bring a running backpack with enough water and nutrition. I did a 39k run with 2400m of elevation in technical terrain and needed about 7:45hrs overall( i finished 89th/300). If you pace yourself and take enough minerals and energy it should be doable if you can run long distances. But depending on the terrain you will probably need double or triple the time you would for a flat run. By the way my run has 4000m of elevation with the highest point at 2500m. Unfortunately I had to cancel due to a business trip.
@mattschm54863 жыл бұрын
@@timedwards1921 that’s a tough run. You can probably expect to run way more than 10hrs. I would probably expect to finish in 11-12 hrs. But terrain makes a huge difference. My run was cloudultra.run

It's a whole new world, with a lot I need to learn while I increase my fitness and mileage. One questing I have is how many pairs of shoes you recommend having in rotation while training, and how you decide how to rotate them?

Awesome Kelly, really glad you've found us and you're enjoying the channel 👍 The Skyline races are epic, just get practicing on super technical terrain and you'll be fine! 😊 Obviously shoe rotation is a personal thing. I obviously change my shoes around quite a lot and I think it really helps with breaking up the repetition of running. Maybe have a shoe for longer runs, a bit more protection and cushioning. A shoe for shorter, quicker runs, a bit more responsive and a shoe for road running, if you do any road that is 😊 That gives you three shoe's to play around with during your training week 👍 Hope this helps, thanks for watching and welcome to our KZfaq family 🙏

I ran my first ultra, a mountain 55km, last summer, and one thing I really wish I’d done is trained for time on feet. I live in a very flat city, and in training I’d done a couple marathons - I figured that these were close enough to 55 km that I’d run far enough in training. Problem was, I’d trained for distance and not for time, and so I’d never run for over four hours. The ‘run’ lasted almost nine hours, and of course I was totally beat by hour five 😂
@Run4Adventure3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree Mark, I actually mention this in one of my videos 👍 We should always try and do a portion of our training on similar terrain you're going to be racing on. If you can't get to similar terrain then you should do your best to replicate it. I'm running 3-4 times a week since august. I don't have clear plans for next year, but last week I saw beatiful 47km trail run event here in my country Lithuania which should be in October 2022. It is around 470 meters of total ascent so I think this should be quite "friendly" to such newbie like me. I did few local trail runs last montj with 300 vertical meters in 5km distance and I survived. My dream is to run a marathon next year and this 47km trail might be my goal. Looks like win/win: first marathon + couple of more kilometers and technically that would be even my first ultra, right? :D Looks crazy today, but I have almost a year to prepare, so why not? I'm 36 year old guy who was fit enough whole my life, but it is my first time when I am so consistent with my slow running training and diet. 4 months of work and I feel that my shape is the best in my life at the moment and my motivation is still growing. There is no way back. This is new me and I am gonna try to do my first marathon next year! And I'm slowly shifting from road runner to newbie trail runner, because you guys look badass with your vests and other gear, I hope I will find best trail stuff for myself, because I have nothing at the moment except Hoka Challenger 6 GTX shoes which technically are hybrid shoes between road and trail.

any advice about back to back runs pls?
@Run4Adventure4 жыл бұрын
Hi Paolo 👋 As you up your distance back to back runs are a great way of upping your mileage in a way that's less likely to cause problems 😊 It depends on where you are with your distance or fitness levels but for an example you could run 10 miles Saturday and the 15 miles on Sunday. This will get you use to running on fatigued legs but is a lot safer than going out and doing a 25 mile training run! You'll also recover a lot quicker so you'll be ready to carry on training. Obviously if you feel this is to short in distance for where you are you could do 15 Saturday 25 on Sunday. Hope this makes sense and it helps 😊 Thanks for watching the channel and don't forget to subscribe to keep up to date with future content 🙏

Greetings from Arizona!! My name is William and I'm training for a 44 mile hike/run across the Grand Canyon, rim-to-rim-to-rim (R3). As a 63 year old, perhaps you could offer me some advice on my nutrition. I just did a trial run across the canyon, 32 miles, not quite an R3. I generally eat gels, nuts, crackers etc, and this seems to work for me. I was on my feet for 16 hours... yes! I'm somewhat slow! My question is, after mile 27 I started to really lose my appetite and was starting to feel the 'bonk' coming on. The last few miles, I relied mainly on gels, this seemed to help but not sustainable. Should I consider eating more whole foods, sandwiches etc. There are no eating stations on this hike! William:)

After being inspired by Alexanda Sorokin ive decided to try and run a 50k, so far ive done a 25k (2:40 6:24km pace) 26k (2:43 6:17 pace) and a 27k (3:11 7:06 km pace) over the last 3 weekends but my legs start to ache around 23 k onwards , the last 27k last weekend was a little cold and windy to be honest and that played a part only being 5'11 and 65 kg and I know i under fueled only taking on 100 g of carbs in the form of gels and nutbars plus 750ml water on all 3 runs (dont get me wrong i love the achey legs) but its getting in the way of my goal and just wondering if i need more time to build up the distance or im missing something in the fueling department ?

I have a 50km in a month. I’ve been running for about 1 year but I’ve never done a distance as long as that.

I hope the video helped and it gave you a few pointers Patrick 😊 Remember distance is just perception of the mind. If you think it's a long way, it'll feel like a long way! As a human being you are capable of so much more when it comes to distance. The main thing is to manage your body, fuel and hydration well on the day but most of all enjoy the experience! Best of luck with your first 50k and let us know how you get on. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel 🙏😊

How you keep your legs from getting sore/seizing up? I ran a marathon distance a few wks back(my 2nd one ever). I had thought about continuing to 50k but by the end was knackered(hadnt brought food or much water) so didnt. When I stopped running my legs suddenly became very achy and restless for about 5/10mins. Weirdly painful !!!!! Never had that before. I hate to think how they would have reacted if I did the extra 8k !! ....... So how do you get your legs used to that distance? Im amazed people can run 100k and their legs dont fail on them. Seems incredible that people can actually do that. Anyway gr8 video, tks for the advice.

Hi Rozormiller A marathon is a long way to run! Over the course of a marathon you'll burn somewhere in the region of 3500-4500 calories. The body can only store 2000 calories in carbohydrates so if you don't put fuel in while you run your body will get really depleted! 😔 Also it sounds like you need to be taking on more fluid. Running distance is all about managing your body, eating, drinking, keeping on top of everything. If you don't you'll just grind to a halt, the further you run the more important it becomes. If you took on 100k with a similar approach of not really drinking and eating, you wouldn't finish and you'd end up in a very bad way 👍 Obviously training and building your mileage up slowly is what conditions the body to handle the distance. I've been running distance for a long time now and the more you do it the more you learn, but you'll always have to go through some levels of discomfort, that's just part of it! 😊 Thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏

Not really Gazza 🤔 I don't eat meat and I try to eat as healthy as I can but if I want a bit of cake I have a bit of cake! 😋 Thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏

im doing one tomorrow, i normally run 10k 2-3 times a week but im going in the deep end tomorrow lets see how it goes im not going to drink anything too because even water gives me an energy dump
@Run4Adventure9 ай бұрын
Wow, that really is in at the deep end! You're not going to drink anything!! That really would be a bad idea, I would definitely recommend taking on some fluid and nutrition. Running an Ultra marathon is very different from running a 10k,best of luck 🤞🍀

yeah i quit after 22km i was really sad with myself, i really thought i could do it. i thought i'd take a rest and stopped at 22km to take a drink of water at a fountain and then i had a sudden case of nausea(probably from water or stopping for once, probably both). The day was not ideal too, Raining(moderate) my shoes and socks wet at start of the run and what really made me stop was the extreme wind against me, its like running through a force field it really sucked. i thought i could do it though. water did not help my body too@@Run4Adventure
@avinesh27469 ай бұрын
i think i would of kept going if the wind was not so bad. i like to think i can push my self to limits, my mind was just not ready for that. this run was all about pushing my mind to my limits. or maybe thats me making excuses for my poor performance :(

@@avinesh2746 Sorry to hear that but like I said running Ultra distances is a much bigger undertaking than running a 10k. It's something you definitely have to train and prepare for, it's the training that makes you physically and mentally tough enough to complete the distance. Running a 50k is definitely something you can achieve but you just have to be better trained and better prepared next time. You'll then be ready for when it gets tough, because it always does but you'll be able to push through and make it to the finish 👍😊

My age is 46 so I want to run 100 km so I am in practice. Can you tell which protein is best
@Run4Adventure3 жыл бұрын
That's great B Ramya, 100k is a great distance 😊 I get all my protein from my diet I don't really use powder proteins or anything like that. I do sometimes use Fuel 10k protein drinks but not all the time 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏

Could you kindly make me recommendations of nutrition for a 55k in a mountain?
@Run4Adventure Жыл бұрын
Nutrition is super personal Marlene but I'm a big fan of Maurten gels and their drink mix. It's not the cheapest but it works really well for me. I'd suggest trying a few different things out before your race and see how you get on. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel, good luck with your race 🙏😊
