I got my gait analyzed by a friend of mine and I found out I over stride and have a low cadence. 135 was my cadence on Monday and I felt light knee pain. So yesterday I focused on shorter steps and ran with a 162 cadence and had absolutely 0 knee pain. Your videos are insanely helpful and insightful.

Loving the ultra content! I never had any desire at all to run a road marathon. I jumped right to trail 50ks, and haven't looked back. My favorite part is throwing out the 'when to eat before running' rule. A stack of whole grain pancakes and bacon a half hour before a long run? Delightful! Ordered takeout for dinner, then decide to fit in a run right after? Out you go! Any run over 30 minutes I wear my comfy Ultimate Direction vest for phone, fuel, first aid... and TP! Lol

@@ezekielanderson9055 I'm definitely blessed with a strong stomach, but I had to work my way up to it. Eating within an hour or two was a guarantee that I'd be visiting the shrubs. Now I can just avoid spicy or acidic foods and head out. I didn't want to be sucking on nasty gels for an entire slow 50k, so I had to practice a LOT. The key was slowing down even more than my already slowed down pace. Lol

Same thing here. No interest in road marathons but did my first 50k ultra trail last saturday, the UTMB in Puerto Vallarta. I'm officially a finisher! I agree that eating- and specially drinking- is super important. I like to eat a protein shake with a nutella sandwhich 1.5- 2 hours before starting, maybe half a banana too. Realized this during the training runs. Then I ate something every 30 minutes along the race, whether a gel (which I happen to like) , an energy bar, or food at the stations. Temperature was above 90F (30C) throughout the race so hydration was critical too. :)

Only raced in half marathons, done full marathons in training which was fine, so know how I need double the calories to what most runners use which should be fun. Signed up for a 37 miler end of next month. Should be good, did a 12.5 trail run last week which was a total quagmire, came out fine and loved it. It served as a good dry run for this ultra I have coming. Only trick will be pacing, I'm usually 620w so might dial it back to 500w and grind it out. Wish me luck!!

Good advice. What you eat before, and leading up to the race is equally important. I suggest avoid any sugary food, slow release is the answer. So no yummy deserts, scrumptious cream cakes etc. Just listen to your body, great tip….leave your watch at home. Best advice I have had is concentrate on the long and slow training. Post run light exercise is very important, perhaps an exercise bike. Just my thoughts, though only done a seven hour race so far, 52k, 4000m in a weeks time.

As a personal trainer, Im doing my first marathon in a couple weeks and I can safely say that nutrition is MORE important than your conditioning, if you got the right fuel, you could technically walk the entire marathon with no hitches, but if you reverse that and do a marathon with little fuel but ALOT of conditioning, no amount of conditioning will prepare you when you run out of glycogen in your muscles, aka the WALL. Same with ultras, the theory is solid, nutrition, nutrition, nutrition. planning my first ultra next year assuming this years marathon doesnt kill me :-D
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience Жыл бұрын
Hey Kaizze! Coach Liz here and I have to agree! To be more specific, having a daily nutrition in plan to support the endurance training is key. It's not just what you do during the race, it matters what you are putting in before, after, and during the training phases. After hitting the wall with a loose daily nutrition plan myself, I have had to learn that getting the quality calories in is KEY! THANKS FOR WATCHING!
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon 3 жыл бұрын
Nice content. A good (but unpopular) advice I'd add is to skip 50K and do 50 miles instead. The lessons from 50K are misleading and gives the impression you are on track because you "ran an ultra" but it's just very different. 50K feels like a very long marathon vs. 50 miles feels like an ultra. You run a 50K, vs. you do 50 miles. E.g., real digestion issue usually comes later than 50K. Doing a 100K after that is worth it - not for the added distance, but to have some night trail run experience before jumping into 100 miles.
@benjaminbloedorn2922
@benjaminbloedorn2922 Жыл бұрын
I'd say this is unpopular, because it is pretty dismissive of those who have done or are planning on doing a 50k. Every run has its challenges for those who are doing it. If someone can jump right to the 50 mile, power to them, if a 50k is where they want to dip their toes, it can be just as challenging and rewarding.
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon Жыл бұрын
@@benjaminbloedorn2922 I'm sorry if it sounds that way as this is not the intent. If you'd knew me, you'd know I'm always cheering for others regardless of speed or distance. 50K? Good for you! 10k? That's awesome! High five! I'm considered a pretty positive and social guy on trails, and always help a fellow runner. From my experience, ultra runners are much less judgmental. We support each other regardless of level and celebrate any achievement because you are not racing others, you are racing yourself and pushing your own limit - making a better version of yourself. It's not a pissing contest! Be it a 10k, 50k, 100 miles, it doesn't matter. Truth is, there is always someone doing more than you, and there is always someone looking up to you thinking what you do is incredible and they could never do it. And all you have to do is help those people... But as for why it's unpopular, I think you are close to the reason. People wrongfully assume that a 50k is harder than a 50miles, that the training is harder. That a 50 miles is a more ambitious goal. That saying "i did a 50K" is not as impressive as "I did a 50 miles". But that's not true at all- a good training block for a 50k is just as hard and time consuming as a 50 miles, or 100 miles really. BUT, and that's why it is a good advice, the problems you are trying to resolve are different, and so the lesson and focus in training is different. You don't just take a 50k plan and multiply everything by 1.6x.... No need!. Easy difference to point are running at night, not caring about pace, including power hiking as part of training, and although nutrition is always important, it's 10000x more past the 6-8 hours mark. In short, what you solve for is fairly different, and the way you'll solve problem during a 50k build up may actually get you wrong habits (e.g., caring about pace, limit gear you carry, rely on aid stations too much them being closer, doing very short pit stop, never sit). It doesn't mean it's better or harder to do one vs. the other, it's just different. For example, I don't run marathon myself anymore. Why? Definitely not because it's too short or easy, quite the contrary,. I'm actually a pretty bad marathoner, but it's also not my vibe. Different distance = different sport, doesn't mean. If 50k is your jam, good for you!

I thought about doing the 32 but went straight to the 50 and glad I did. 32 is no joke. But the fact that you have 18 after those 32 just makes it a mental colosseum. So I 100% get that argument. I’d agree that if you’re gonna suffer through an ultra just go to the 50 you won’t regret it
