English - Welcome to another Schony747 tram presentation. If you like the channel content, hit subscribe for weekly updates. There is a new tram presentation on a Saturday.
New Preston Depot and Preston Workshops is the home to the former East Preston Tram Depot tram operations. Melbourne Tram Routes 11 and Tram Route 86 run from New Preston Depot. New Preston is one of 8 operational depots across The Yarra Trams Melbourne Network. There is a unique signalling system that allows trams to run out from the depot in a systematic and coordinated manner. This video will give you a basic view of that car out procedure.

I'm a recent subscriber. Thanks so much for sharing all the videos of trams. I've been enjoying riding them in the streets of Melbourne. I particularly like footage like that in this video, showing the non-public part of the infrastructure. I've been an electric traction fan since the late 50's when I was a kid. Cheers from the USA.

Only just come across this video, enjoyed it. Worked from the old Preston depot near Bell st. years ago as a Connie. Things have definitely changed.

Awesome 😄😄 another cool behind the scenes vid. Definitely need alot of coordination in a huge depot like that. I think I would need a few goes at training before I would be confident getting out of the depot. But I'm sure it all starts to make sense after a while with all the signals and route training out there. It would be so cool to have a look around at New Preston Depot, I would have so much fun there but I can't go in, haha. Thanks for sharing another great video Brenden 😄👍 I always enjoy these ones😄

Mate for me it was pretty easy as I was already using the signals at East Brunswick. It's not hard to learn and after a few goes you would get it.

Brendan please, please do more on Preston Depot . So much has changed if I am corcorrect in thinking Jim H is the manager Im sure some strings could be pulled for us ex trammies up here in Brisbane to be shown more eg the starters office loved the video

Jewels Grano (Michaels) is the depot Manager. Mr Hatzis is the administrator. YT have a media policy so it's hard to present stuff. The Preston Starters office is pretty slick. Next time I'm up there which is not very often these days, I'll get a photo.

@@Schony747 Thought they might be strict. Just amazing that the workshops are now a working depot. That was never on the cards years ago. Looks like it will not be long and they will need to build or expand other depots to keep up with demand. By the way C1s and D class trams must be coming up to major overhauls. Do you know of any plans for them. I thought 3 car D class trams were able to be extended to 5 car sets by installing modules, are there any plans ? Cheers Steve

When are they going to extend the West Preston route in Gilbert Rd to Henty st? long over due! As back in the 80's i can remember Premier Cain wanted a tram stop @ his doorstep in Bundoora..

Not for a while I wouldn't think. It's like the Airport West extension to Gladstone Park. It's been on the cards for years!

It is always fun to catch the trams when visiting Melbourne, quite a novelty coming from Sydney (before we have light rails). Question: who set the points for these type of operation? Central control room, local control, tram driver? How would the tram be identified and their special needs of change of direction be met. Also, say route #19 on Elizabeth St going to the Flinder Street terminal, who switch the points to the incoming trams and send them back to the other track?

Regarding Elizabeth St, the points leaving the shunt back to the suburbs are spring loaded so the point automatically position themselves so rhe departing train runs onto the correct outbound track.

2:32, is the ramp for loading W's, Z's and A's onto trucks for refurbishment and/or storage?

yes it is however its location is new . It was originally located parralle to St Georges rd which was the only way in or out.

All trams get loaded and offloaded there.

As Stephen said, the vacant land was the old Thornbury Depot where W class were stored and serviced

I think it's for loading/unloading tram carriages from trucks

As Vincent said, it's where the trams are loaded and unloaded for the workshops.

It's not a bad area actually. It's inner Melbourne so to speak and you need $ to live there now.
