In the fall of 2021, the Cross Country team at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, Maryland, hoped that they had a team that could win a state championship. But there was a problem: one of their top runners, junior Oliver Ferber, felt that he could not run because the championship fell on a Saturday, the Jewish sabbath. Forced to choose between his team and his faith, Oliver took a stand…and then pushed for a change.
