Trail runners visiting the Grand Canyon will typically run a double crossing of the canyon. But with the trail to the North Rim closed for repairs, we decided to explore the Tonto Trail instead.
Note: Drone footage courtesy of the National Park Service. Flying drones in national parks in the United States is not allowed.

Great video. Took me some time to understand why I was sure that you posted this video before… It was the diaries! :) Me and 3 friends did a very similar run just a couple of days after you, except we did a loop and ran the rim in the morning and came back up by Bright Angel. Such a nice experience and the flowers were amazing.

Not only are you running these long distances with everything that comes along with that, but you're also filming it all and at the same time planning what you want to include in the final video. I see you as a really good athlete and equally good content creator with an artistic sense of blending together clips, music, voiceovers and the overall pace of the video. My favorite video of yours is the Mont Blanc 2022. What I want to say is that I'm glad I found your channel. :-)

I grew up in Flagstaff and have hiked some of these trails before. It’s just mind blowing to see you guys running them this fast! I just can’t even fathom. Just going down and up Bright Angel used to kill me! The canyon can be so brutal… cold, heat, elevation. You guys make it look like a Sunday morning park stroll! It’s NUTS! Love it! Thanks for all the beautiful footage bringing me home to my roots! (Started watching your videos because my brother is currently hiking Torres del Paine O trek and sent me your video so I could follow along and see what he was seeing. So thanks for that as well!)

Wonderful doc. Every time I'm tempted to make content that caters to the algorithm, I watch these and am reminded that it's not about that. It's about sharing the authentic experience with people.

Guys!! This was spectacular!!! I've run 12 R2R's from the NR, and 4 Rim2River's, and have had my eye on the the Tonto from Hermits. I don't think I'm tough enough pull off the extended version, but certainly, the short-route. Awesome run conditions!!! Love how you put this together. Great narration, great editing, and the slo-mow was outstanding! Well done!

This was epic! I backpacked in the early '90s down Bright Angel and up S. Kaibab (KYE-bab, rather than KYE-bob) in '91, and the following year round trip on the N. Kaibab, the S. in 4 hrs. down, and 6 hrs. up, with N. Rim in 7hrs., and 10hrs, 40 up. Even though it was a different route, seeing what the Tonto Trail was great, since I never was able to do that one.

Ever since reading Man Who Walked Through Time I've been curious about running more of the length of the GC instead of just the "usual" in-and-out routes. I always love a connector, so taking Tonto as far as I can is the plan! Limited camping options are a challenge for a multi-day effort.

I’ve hiked most of the Tonto since my first backpacking trip in the Canyon in 1977, most recently last February when I ran S Kaibab to Phantom Ranch and over the Tonto to Bright Angel. More than 200 nights’ camping below the Rim. Glad to see you focusing on the Back Country. The North Bass Trail is maybe my favorite; you can hike and run in Shinumo Creek an entire week and not see anyone.

@@JeffPelletier also meant to tell you to take your friend’s suggestion and get to Grand Mesa. There’s a local race series there in July (the Grand Mesa Ultras) that takes you through one of Colorado’s biggest surprises: high meadows, lakes and enormous mushrooms that seem more like the woods of Finland than the American West. Wow Jeff. Another very nice video and a very impressive landscape. I always look forward to a new episode on your channel. Can you tell me about the setup you use to film such videos and whether you use a separate recording device for the sound? Do you only use the GoPro and Insta360 cameras outdoors on tour? Keep up the good work. Greetings Andy
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 5 ай бұрын
I mainly shoot on the GoPro and Insta360, along with a bit of footage from the iPhone 13 Pro. I never record sound separately, but sometimes the ambient sound that you'll hear in my films is actually added in post, whenever it was too windy to use the actual sound. There are a few shots where the sound of water I had to add back in, for example, in this film.

Thanks for the quick reply Jeff. It's impressive what's possible with action cams and smartphones. Everything is small, handy and especially for longer tours you don't want to lug around even more weight and equipment. You can't do it without PostProduction, but I'm very impressed with what's possible with Insta and GoPro. Thank you and I'm looking forward to the next videos. I find them very inspiring and maybe one day I'll manage to project my thoughts into the video world. Have a nice day@@JeffPelletier

Jeff, I love your videos. But I agree with the window person at Phantom Ranch. They've probably had their fill of people with cameras looking for social media fame, glory, whatever. Don't expect them to be happy to be included in your video. It doesn't help that runners in the Canyon already have a bad reputation for treating it like a trophy or rudely brushing past other trail users. I know you don't do that, but I've seen many who do.
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 5 ай бұрын
Yea, you're probably right. As a business though, Phantom Ranch is no doubt making a killing from that $5 sugar water that me and others are promoting on social media. That seemed to be what the person at the window was mostly getting paid to dispense.

That last line answered my question when you filmed this (2022). I'm curious if you're just like me and won't be back to film in national parks after they've put in.. or RE put in the no filming without permit rule at the end of 2022. Especially after what the national parks did to Eric Hansen, some disgraceful people running them at least down in Arizona, I won't be back with my camera that's for sure. It's sad to think about all the films like yours here that won't be told because of overt hate it seems NP higher ups have towards content creators.
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 6 ай бұрын
This was filmed in 2023 actually, after the new rules came in, so I had to pay for a permit. The cost isn’t exactly prohibitive, although it does require extra planning in advance. So no last minute adventures.
