In October 2018 the Consortium packed their bags and returned to the Grand Canyon for their second stab at the Rim to Rim to Rim. The infamous double-crossing often called the R2R2R, is run from one side to the other and back again in one day. Averaging 45 miles in distance, 10,000 feet of ascent, and 10,000 feet of descent, it's a formidable challenge for any adventurous ultrarunner.
The views are epic and jaw-dropping but the weather is often volatile... Expect the Unexpected.

My pastor invited me to attempt this with him in 2023. Thanks for the video to keep me inspired to keep training. It looks very challenging, but rewarding with and a lifetime of memories.

Great job guys! I did my first R2R on Oct 19th, '23, at 66 years old. I went South to North heading down the Kaibab trail. Very challenging and I'm glad I did it, the last 5 miles North of Manzanita were tough, finished in 14 hours :).

Good job, those GI issues are really tough to face, we still have them in 2022.

I’ve hiked up Bright Angel all the way. Last September I hiked down to Indian Gardens and back up. I was tired but ok. Only problem was not used to elevation. I am planning a group tour next fall for a North Rim to South Rim backpacking hike, but it will be 2 days down and 2 days up. Excited about it! But I would not do a down/up on the same day. You guys ROCK even if you didn’t get back to the other side! 👏

Been backpacking in the Canyon since 2007, and started running R2R with my then 15yr old daughter, in 2015. We've now done R2R 5yrs in a row, and I've done it twice solo, plus a Rim2River in the last year. LOVED this video because you captured what it's like. The gung-ho "WE'RE DO'IN THIS".....the logistics of travel, packing, bringing the right nutrition and drink.....the energy of "HERE WE GO!!" and then what it's like down inside. The Canyon just cracks me up. You go from the highest "I've go this" high, to the lowest, "I don't know if I can even get myself out of this d*mn place" in just a matter of a few miles. There's no way I'd do an R3. For me, and my ability to train for something like that, and the risk of permanently wrecking my already marginal knees....there's just no way it's worth it. But I love that you guys went back for seconds, I love the comradery, and I love guts it took. Blowing chow in the Canyon is about as real as it gets. I've been close, my daughter actually has. The last thing you want to hear from your kid is, "Dad, I just puked. You should do it too. You'll feel so much better." We've posted a couple of our runs there to my channel. Incredibly tough haul and I hope you go back for thirds! Sometimes the canyon wins, and sometimes you win. 👍

Hey Thanks Todd! I'll be sure to check out your stories as well. Ugh, it's one thing to experience it yourself but to watch your daughter do that - that's rough! You and your daughter are champs! The GC is like a drug, once she gets in you nothing else can really compare. Peak Highs and the Lowest Lows. Thanks for watching Todd!

Subscribed! I'm hoping to run the R2R2R this year (2021) and record my experience for my running channel too. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Epic experience - good for you guys. Did this in 2013 and 2017... that slog to the north rim is so beautiful and just brutal... and coming back into phantom ranch thinking - its only 13.5 more miles!! Thinking of doing it again in May/early June - and can’t decide if your video has inspired me to do it again!

Slog is a great word for it! I hope it didn't deter you. I've been a dozen times and that experience will definitely not be keeping me away. See ya there.

0:34 "...stopped just 10 miles short of the finish". Ok, what did you do 10 miles short of the finish (which would be the bottom of the canyon)? Did you ride mules out?

How do you stop 10 miles short on a r2r2r? Nevermind, now I get it.

Haha, I can assure you, only finishing a R2R when your mates complete the full thing is rough.

What type of shoes did you run in? Road or trail? Generally wear Salomon trail shoes but it looks like many go with something with more cushion?
@alexdtucker
@alexdtucker 2 жыл бұрын
I love Saucony Peregrines. Light enough to do alot of miles in while still being durable for tough trails like that. I've never been someone who needs max cushioning but it all depends on what you prefer. Salomons would do great there.

I watch you on Strava as well as YT. Have you thought of going back and finishing r2r2r? You’ve done so much you certainly have nothing to prove, I was just wondering if it was on your list or you have moved past it?
