Theatrical is what Kate does. She likes to present different characters in her songs, and the vocals often change accordingly. Also, she’s an astonishing lyricist. The maturity of the songs she was writing at age 17 is beyond belief. Going back to earlier recordings is a good idea. I’d recommend hitting“Babooshka” or “Violin.”

You can feel a connection to Peter Gabriel in the theatrical elements. Kindred souls. These guys should cover 'Don't Give Up". Her "Women's Work" is pretty heavy as are her anti-war songs. "Army Dreamers" video is devastating.

Nobody ever mentions the fantastic avant garde backing vocals on the last two minutes of this song. Go back and listen again and just pay attention to Kate's vocals behind the music.

Kate has always created from within her own universe that she occasionally shares with us. Her music provides a key to a secret door, but she has always been a full performance artist. She is true to herself and doesn't chase the carrot that leads to success, yet success still finds her because her talent is unique and boundless. Her music defies labels. It's enigmatic yet it always perfectly expresses who Kate is.

The thing about Kate Bush is either you love it or you don't. There is no middle ground. At this time in the 80s I was a metal guy and hated it, but as I got older and understood the vibe I became a huge fan of hers.

They have to understand 1) she sounds like no one else 2 ) She is not overdoing anything she just follows her own path. Nothing she does is derivitive of someone else 3) her dance and perfornane is 50% of her appeal.

Do wanna know, know that it doesn't hurt me" It's so deep, because she wanted to change places so he could feel the yearning, the frustration, the heartbreak that didn't seem to go both ways. The deep bullet that's lodged in her heart, let's switch, did you know that it was tearing you asunder? I mean, I've been right there. Epic poetry. Brilliant! In so many ways! I love 💕 the Celtic vibe of those drums, this song is so evocative, I'm in Ireland! :)

You need to hit Wuthering Heights - a hit she had when she was 17. She has an unusual voice and is extremely talented, she took time out to have a family but she is back touring again.

Kate Bush is artistically important and I hope you'll consider reacting to her again. Her vocals are powerful yet delicate. It may take additional listens for you to appreciate the strata of her musical genius. And she is very theatrical. That's part of who she is as an artist. "Wuthering Heights," "This Woman's Work," and "Don't Give Up" (her duet with Peter Gabriel) are some of her better known songs but really anything from her catalog is worth hearing. So glad y'all finally got around to her!

What is your opinion of Pat Benatar's cover of "Wuthering Heights"? It's clearly more mainstream, with Pat and Neil Giraldo really turning it into a rock song, complete with soaring guitar solo. But Pat has such a beautiful, operatic voice. I really think she does the song justice. She puts her own "theatrical" spin on the vocals.

True story: a friend set me up on a blind date in 1991 with his girlfriend's college roommate. While we were waiting for her to show up at his old rowhouse on Capitol Hill in DC, my friend's girlfriend warned me her roommate was a talented singer but a little unconventional. Just then, a hand appeared above the shutters scratching on the front window, and I heard a voice singing this line from the song "Wuthering Heights" in a credible imitation of Kate Bush : " Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy I’ve come home, I'm so cold Let me in-a-your window Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy I’ve come home, I'm so cold Let me in-a-your window." Thus I met "Cathy." One day shy of a year later, we were married.

There is a live version of "Running up That Hill" with David Gilmore on guitar, definitely worth checking though "Wuthering Heights"(78 she was 19) based on the 1800's novel 100% and totally respect checking audio over video but in this case I recommend the official video, because she is a performance artist and this performance is truly transformative. Warning vocals very high register and a bit odd, but for me is whats so alluring about it. She is a genius full stop. It was painful to watch the boys reaction because you need to check her earliest track to fully get her.

The whole middle school thing with this song! I was a little older than Andy and Alex when this came out and I have always thought it was met most accessible song to a mass US audience. Cloudbursting would also be up there. Her vocal choice in Wuthering Heights I think would be very difficult for them. It really helps to know the reason behind it. That being said, it was Wuthering Heights and the album The Dreaming that totally turned me into a big fan. She has so many great songs and she is one artist where her videos can really help as she is also such a visual artist. That being said I know a lot of people especially in the US just don’t seem to get her unlike so much of the rest of the world.

I've been harping on not just context, but lore. I mean, the moment in time and the framework is hard to convey, the synth has always existed for these guys, so has social media, Google, totally not their fault. Highly recommend her very first hit(#1 in UK) "Wuthering Heights"(78 she was 17)) based on the 1800's Novel, her most mesmerizing emotional track 100% and when David Gilmour took her under his wing. Totally respect checking audio over video but in this case I recommend the official video, because she is a performance artist and this performance is truly transformative She is a genius, totally unique and you won't fully understand her if you don't experience her earliest material. Her biggest hits in the US are the most big 80's produced. Andy, in this case I would not use the term Banger I would say transformative and an emotional journey. I think the big 80's production of Running up that Hill takes away. My suggestions (check official videos!) 1) Wuthering Heights 2) Big Sky 3) Babooshka

If you don’t like this song you probably won’t like her earlier work. Kate Bush is a unique artist. Her voice and delivery can be jarring to some. Others, like myself, love that she doesn’t sound like anyone else. I wasn’t aware of her connection to Gilmor but I know Peter Gabriel was a huge supporter. I think you can hear him singing background on this recording and I know she sang on some of his work.

This song holds a special place on my heart. Back in 1985-86, I would ride to school with my neighbor friend. This cassette would be playing. He was small in stature and big in personality - cigarette in one hand, coffee cup in the other, driving this giant boat of a car. Good memories. #RIPKurt

The album this is from, Hounds of Love, is a spectacular record, taken as a whole. Kate is a performer - writer, keyboardist, singer, dancer, videographer - her artistry shines through in whatever she does. Let me add, if you want to hear some of her later work with Gilmour sneaking in on guitar, check out Love and Anger from the Sensual World album.

I figured you guys might not totally dig - Kate Bush and other art rock/post punk/ progressive pop styles are usually unconventional and vibey and don't have a lot of banging solos like guitars, etc. but it's still great stuff. It was super appropriate for the times as well.

B? For Running Up That Hill? Kate Bush is one of the most unique, and brilliant, artists and this is one of her best songs. She is a genre all unto herself. For some artists, dipping your toe is insufficient. You should immerse yourself in Kate Bush, like a baptism. And afterwards you will be saved.

Listen to the words, guys. It's about a relationship "you want to know if it hurt me ...... see how deep the bullet lies". "Make a deal with God and get him to swap our places". She wants to see things from her partner's perspective to better understand and help their relationship.

The song is actually about a woman who wants to swap bodies with her lover so as to allow him to experience their relationship from her perspective ("come on baby, come on darling, let's exchange the experience"). Hence the dance at the beginning representing lovemaking, with the initial lyrics "It doesn't hurt me, do want to feel how it feels, do you want to know it doesn't hurt me ..." It astonishes me how this all seems to be above most reactors heads, no offence!

Interesting note.... The Head-set microphone was developed for Kate as she does quite a bit of movement when performing. She was friends with Peter Gabriel who also adopted this microphone.... and the rest is history.

A & A: The guitarist is Alan Murphy, a session musician probably best known for playing lead guitar on Mike and the Mechanics 1986 hit "Silent Running," including the haunting guitar solo. A song definitely worth checking out, also a rather atmospheric song, but one I believe much more suited to your tastes. Murphy unfortunately died a few years later from complications of AIDS.

Alan Murphy also did great work with Go West and the second incarnation of Level 42. His own band SFX was a great fusion album.

"Stranger Things" is so good this season, and I'm very happy they used Kate's song as an integral part of the show. I also love her "Wuthering Heights" song.

it is brilliant but Alex (nor I )are a fan of the big 80's studio production courtesy of Daniel Lanois. The writing and performance S-Tier I just wish it was a bit more stripped down but at that time the production had gone off the rails. Way too heavy handed and detracts from the brilliant material. Her very first UK #1 hit "Wuthering Heights (based on the 1800's novel (official video #2) 100%

You should check out the official video, Kate is an accomplished dancer and does an incredible routine in this video, Kate Bush is an icon, a pioneer for women in the music industry, an innovative one of a kind musical and artistic genius. Highly influential and respected by musicians, fans, critics, etc. world wide. A brilliant vocalist (with a 4 octave voice), composer, lyricist, pianist, producer, dancer, mime, choreographer, video director.

A lot of 80s music was about creating atmosphere and vibe and just sitting with it. Hard to explain how it hit our ears at that moment in time. We had been through 70s stadium rock which is a big exciting sound, as well as disco music which is about sped up tempo and obviously, dancing. So the atmospheric synth sound was a different feeling, it was like just being patient and sitting with it, and being almost hyper aware of every little key change. I loved it - it actually felt like suspense, and like being let in on a secret. It had a cinematic quality. There are so many 80s songs that created their own specific atmosphere or vibe but I won’t recommend them to you because it’s not your thing! I would recommend more Van Morrison to you though - one of my favorites from the era you guys are into.

Listening to the magical, unique, ethereal creature that Kate Bush is, is only a part of the experience....with some artists you just HAVE TO see the clip to see the performance that accompanies it. Kate is a theatrical/performance/dance artist, as well as songwriter and singer. All these parts need to be consumed together to really get the full flavour of what she is about. She's British....she has an English/British accent. Just listening to Kate Bush PERFORM is like watching a movie with a blindfold on.

I had a feeling Kate Bush would be a tough sell on the younger guys... she is an artist that really needs to be associated with the context. There were not many female rock artists in the late 70s, and even at that, Kate was remarkably unique. Also, Kate pre-dated Madonna with regard to the use of male dancers on stage - it was completely unheard of prior to Kate. She was a marvel beyond her years, but admittedly, an acquired taste. Hearing her vocals, even Geddy Lee said, "Damn, that's' high!" I loved her first album The Kick Inside when it came out and was very impressed with the production. Then this came out and the production went up 10 fold. She’s is a real talent who always does her own thing and never follows trends. A real treasure.

Kate is a legend. I love this song and the video, surreal and so dam fantastic. Been a fan since early 80’s. This track gives me goosebumps, it has an effect on one’s soul. So beautiful

Just find it bizarre that in the UK if an artists state their influences people have a look. A lot of American artists and not even the same genre have always said Kate was an influence but it's taken years for people to have a look.

I moved down to Houston Texas in the early 80s A few years after I graduated and a couple roommates of mine we’re really into Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, XTC, the Smith’s etc. and she is absolutely fabulous. You need to listen to her sing with Peter Gabriel The song is “don’t give up“

there's a live performance of Running Up That Hill that features David Gilmour, I like it a lot :D David Gilmour is also featured in some of her songs, like Pull Out the Pin (which i love) She's very theatrical in her work in general

It's great, worth checking out - Gilmour soloing instead of the synth blasts, real and very strong fretless bass instead of programmed bass, the song becomes more powerful, improved 100%

Try Siouxsie and The Banshees song "Cities in Dust" it is equally brooding but has dynamic change and movement and none of the weird "dramatic" like stylings in the vocals

"Rocket's Tail" is a Kate Bush tune that David Gilmour actually solos in. Also, backing vocals by the Bulgarian Woman's Choir make this selection even more ethereal. IMHO a necessary recommendation. Cheers Guys.

You also have to watch her videos. She was a classically trained ballet dancer and a master at choreography. The video for this song with all the dance moves increases pretty much anyone’s appreciation for the song. It also helps tell the story of the lyrics.

It's a concept album in 2 parts, side 1 is more "singles" side 2 is called "The Ninth Wave", you have to listen to the entire album. Remember she was heavily influense by Pink Floyd and this was back in the day of LPs so you had to change sides.

I love that she owns 100% of the rights to this song and will make all the profit from the resurgence. She owns the rights to the song writing, the production, the licensing etc. She is amazing. Check out her cover of Rocket Man. That is the first time I heard her and fell in love with her.

Dunno if it's possible or if it'd change your mind much, but you guys should really check out the official music video for this song. I normally wouldn't think to mention it when it comes to music but Kate is very different in that she really goes hard on making the videos(if the song ends up getting one made) a very complimentary, if not sometimes essential, part of the experience. I'd also throw in that maybe looking out for the applicable music videos in the future might not be a bad idea if you go more into her library.

You MUST listen you the whole album "Hounds of Love," to get her completely. She is a performance artist. She actually was the one who came up with the microphone headset with a coat hanger and wireless mic attached, so she could dance while singing.

Kate Bush for me was the two albums The Dreaming & Hounds of Love. Wondrously conceived, performed and filled with some eclectic sounds that don't necessarily seem to work during your first listen. But the talent and creativeness pulls you in and you eventually get "lost in the sauce" and become a serious fan. Also a killer voice (vocal range of 3 + octaves).

Maybe someone else mentioned this but Dave Gilmore let her stay in his house while she worked on her debut album. He supported her all the way. There's a great live performance of Gilmore playing this song with her on youtube.

Kate Bush is an artist that I freely admit I didn't "get" in the 1980s, when I was mostly into guitar-oriented rock: hard rock, metal, and punk. To my shame now, back then, I saw this kind of music as "wimpy." Again, I just didn't get it, and I didn't really give it a chance. The '90s and early 2000s greatly expanded my musical tastes, and I now think that she's a genuine artistic genius. The lyrics here are powerful and profound.

It's funny, because it was Kate's "Hounds of Love" album, XTC's "Skylarking," and The Clash's whole catalogue that opened me up to a musical world beyond Van Halen in the mid-'80s. Never stopped loving VH, but those three artists had me making room for so much more.

@@notabritperse Your account of your musical tastes expanding beyond VH is largely what happened to me too, except that my musical "expanding" beyond guitar-oriented rock came just a few years later, in the early '90s. In the '80s, I was a metalhead who was also getting into hardcore punk, which meant that when thrash metal started, I was very ready for it! :-) In the late '80s, I started to get into guitar-oriented artists beyond just classic rock, hard rock, metal, and punk, such as the Velvet Underground, XTC, and many others. It wasn't really until the early '90s, though, that my mind, and my ears, started to be open to musical artists who fit, broadly speaking, in the "rock" genre, but whose music was not guitar-oriented, for the most part, such as New Order, Kate Bush, and Tori Amos. I still love VH and a ton of other hard rock and metal groups, but my musical world is much bigger now than it was in the '80s, when if I didn't hear a guitar in a song, I wasn't interested. :-)

On top of producing her demos, David Gilmour was a collaborator on three of her albums up to 1992. (As was Peter Gabriel through the 80's). As for Kate, her growth, the arc of what she did with her music is up there with the best of them. And yes, she's theatrical, and since it sounds pejorative for you, well, it ain''t going to change on other Kate songs, so listening to more would probably be a waste of time. That being said, i don't find her singing any more theatrical than Bowie's, or P. Gabriel for that matter. It's like saying Freddie Mercury is theatrical on Bohemian Rhapsody. So...?

Kate Bush’s diction is outstanding so how you couldn’t understand what she was singing is unfashionable - she is a true artist, no compromising, no worrying about commercial success or sales - she records when she wants to and produces moments of perfection with every utterance. Because you have gorged on a diet of male dominated soft and dreary rock you probably don’t recognise real genius. Kate is one of the most innovative artists ever.
