If you want to lose weight you need to regularly burn more calories than you consume. This can be achieved by simply altering your diet or doing more exercise. If you choose an exercise, which sport is the best value when it comes to burning those excessive calories?
We have already looked at the difference between swimming and running in a rough experiment so we thought it made sense to now compare cycling and running. For this one, we are stepping things up and heading to the physiology lab at Team Bath to get a little sciencey!

getting high from exercise is super unhealthy. it is a result of high destructive cortisol that cranks out other steroid hormones to mask away pain - even if it still there. on the other side it reduces testosterone and is wasting muscle. this is why elite marathon runners look ugly skinny fat. not healthy like sprinters. chronic high cortisol sucks out your life and makes you age fast. on the other side alternating training in zone 5 and zone 2 has an anti-aging effect because you grow new healthy mitochondria. with SIT in zone 5, there is mitophagy happening, which is autophagy of the mitochondria (destruction of old defect mitochondria and making room for new healthy ones) so: never ever train in zone 3 (of 5), only alternating in zone 5 and 2

It depends on how hard the effort is. You can’t go full out in anything every single day. There are plenty of ultra runners who log that kind of mileage. I started riding 32 kilometers every day (6am) on my mountain bike but on a paved road, I was still stressed, so I added an afternoon ride (6pm) also for 32k. I ride a total of 64k six days a week and after losing 20 kilos (45 pounds) I'm 5 kilos (11 pounds) away from my target optimal weight. With a sugar-less diet, patience and a twinkle of OCD :) I have managed to keep the riding regimen and loving it.

I have spent all of last year cycling training. I lost some weight, but not nearly as much and as rapidly as I have over the last 5 months only running at similar intensity and regularity. The difference for me is the hunger generated. I feel a far greater need to consume a ton of carbs after my bike rides ( usually lasting an hour) v what I crave after a run ( same duration and intensity). I never feel desperately craving carbs after running compared to my crazy carb craving after cycling. And this difference in what I crave to consume for the rest of the day has helped me lose just over 3 kg running. So, that's an interesting phenomenon for me: how my body reacts to the running v cycling.

Same with me. Its crazy. I now do weight lifting and slow uphill walking on a treadmill whilst intermittently fasting. The best for weight loss as it taps into your fats and doesn’t burn into the stored glycogen in the muscles as much as cycling does. Hence i can get by with one meal (1000 cal) a day easily.

I think it may be worse than that... If a person actually exercises at the same rate for the cycle and the run (to make a fair comparison) then they would have actually done the same internal work/chemistry and used the same volume of oxygen. All they have shown is that heart-rate monitors, which come in a box with a receipt, are less accurate than VO2 meters, which come in a lab with a scientist. Not surprising. The differences between cycling and running are nothing to do with energy, they are everything else.

I don't know why it is, but I had been running more than 70 miles a week and my weight stablilized at around 170 to 176. But as soon as I started doing indoor spinning or the Flywheel app I have lost 10 to 15 pounds. And most of the miles I was running were at sub 8 minute pace. But I have also found that I can maintain my heart rate as high or even higher for longer periods of time while cycling. I still use running as part of my exercise routine but the indoor cycling has kept me injury free, and can substitute cycling for running with no loss of fitness. One Caveat my weight loss due to biking only works if and only I can spin at 200 to 270 watts per a 45 minute to 30 minute session. It is a formula that works for me, your formula might differ but probably not by much. Cheers.

I like to mix it up, and find I can comfortably manage 5km / 25 min running and 60 - 80km / 3 - 4 hr road riding. I see cons with both on their own...cycling doesn’t help with overall body tone and bone density, whereas running has greater risk of knackering joints, so a bit of both makes most sense IMO.

@@gunsmoke9388 Uhmm.. I kind'a disagree with that statement. I mean, I'm a runner but I ain't no newbie when it comes to bikes too tho. When it comes to bikes, specially mountain bikes, it's a common knowledge that majority of them have multiple speed selection specially if you're an elite biker who mainly focuses on cycling as a workout or training. I know it doesn't get easier even if you lower your MTB gear but hey, it actually gives you a little more room for comfort even when you're pedaling in a faster pace, coz you know, you're still sitting down and it's much lighter. Now when it comes to running, we all know we don't have gear options in oir bodies to make hill runs easier, our bodies are built as is and we use all of those muscles to push it to the top without even the slightest comfort of sitting unlike being on a bike. So yeah, I'd say running is harder though..

Thank you for the great video! The mentioned calorie difference is only valid by running/cycling in fitness. The real difference comes from: 1. Attitude difference - even by 100m you can tell there is a big impact. When cycling by descent you can just keep your low HR - in comparison by running you cannot "relax". 2. Uneven terrain - when you run, you need to pay attention and keep safe which increase the calorie burn 3. Duration - the fatique boosts significantly the calorie burn and by 2hours running well trained person is burning far more calories in comparison to 2h cycling My personal conclusionis is that with running I'm burning almost twice the calories in comparison to the cycling activity.

Historically I'm more of a cyclist but lately I've been doing a little of both in the home gym. I've started doing what I call an "indoor sprint triathlon" twice a week with a quick a 750m on the Skierg rower for the swim, 20 km on the spin bike, and then 5 km treadmill run to finish it off. All in all takes about an hour because I'm a hobbyist at best and I'm also spending some time changing shoes, etc. I do find it to be a good workout and the equipment changes keep me from getting bored. You can't really trust equipment calorie calculators too much but the 20 km bike and the 5 km run both say I am burning just over 400 calories each with the bike taking just under 35 minutes and the run taking just over 24 minutes.

When I started My first (and most nostalgia-evoking) loaded bike tour back on July the 29th of 2007, I weighed 95kg. By the 18th of August (21 days later and ca. 1.800km further), upon reaching the destination, I weighed 85kg. And it was quite the experience, too! Miss it dearly. I must admit that My subsequent cycle tours were less efficient in the regard of calorie expenditure, mostly because I was too complacent and consumed a lot of calories underway, in effect thus losing only 3-4 kilos per the same amount of time and distance covered. I've boxed for 4 years, done Brazilian JuJitsu for ca. 6 months, kick-boxer for a year and cycled fairly long and often since 1998 - and, while I was in a fairly good shape at 25 or thereabouts, none was quite as efficient in the sense of getting Me in shape as a loaded cycle tour, combined with a moderate calorie intake. HIIT (again, combined with a controlled calorie intake) was also remarkably efficient. As mentioned, running unquestionably will burn more calories than cycling, but I'm yet to come across a person who can run for 10 hours on end at speeds exceeding walking speed. Walking, upon the other hand, will only burn one-third or thereabouts as many calories as cycling will.

I know this seems like something that "logically makes sense" and might even be "technically true" but it is irrational to give this as advice without context. Running only causes damage when you do more effort that your body can currently handle. I know many people well above 250lbs who run but it does not hurt them because they run correctly and run at a volume/intensity which is not damaging with appropriate recovery.

I am out of shape and turning 50 in about 2 months so I am in the early stages of exploring cycling and running/walking fast in Zone 2 to find which is more effective and enjoyable at burning calories. Thus far walking at 3.0 mph at a 3% incline puts me in Zone 2 and is somewhat enjoyable. I do it for an hour each time. I tried a stationary cycle and due to burning in my legs I was only able to last 15 minutes in what I think was Zone 2. I am basing my effort on my ability to breathe through my nose, ability to speak somewhat easily while exercising, heart rate and wattage produced. I think that I would prefer cycling due to the relative speed but time will tell. Thanks for the video.

I enjoy your channel, and watched your two videos on what is the best way to lose weight. The results were not a surprise, because it all relates back to the size of the muscle Lats vs quad and hamstrings. But all of you are in great shape. For the person who is not in top physical shape, the problem with the bike is that it is easy to coast. You can get by little effort. Swimming some different. People in poor physical shape are taking a couple of leisurely laps (typically breast stroke) and get out of the pool. It takes training just to get yourself to a point where you're exerting energy. If you're over weight and take up running, the forces on your joints are brutal. The best place to start if you're trying to lose weight and are out of shape is walking.

If you want to lose weight you need to burn more calories.. Hmmm. Why are there a lot of fat cyclists, runners, swimmers? I've been cycling for 40y. I tended to be fat UNLESS I did a huge amount of cycling. That's at least 200m per week, including one 100 mile spin. That's a lot but it would knock 2lb off that week. Recent science has caught up with this. Ordinary amounts of exercise have next to no effect. You just get hungrier and eat more. What does work is stopping eating rubbish food, particularly carby thrash. I lost 40lb and have kept if off for 6y whether I cycle or not. I eat no rubbish and eat low carb food. It can be done also by eating very low fat, but that's much less palatable. The problem is that modern pseudofood such as Potato crisps etc., are addictive and allow you to eat beyond your appetite.

Exactly, I too doubt the validity of this discussion from the homebase. DOES anyone really cycle, or run, or both, to have more spectrum for food-input??? Looking into the psychlogy of overeating, and excercise, they do seem to be principally mutual exclusive - we may experience both in our own lifetime, but not simultaneously.
