In this video you'll see Windows 95A running on two very different configurations. The boot drive will the same: an IDE industrial flash module originally used on a 1995 MSI 4144 socket 3 motherboard with SIS 496/497 chipset. The CPU is an AMD DX4/100. (also released in 1995) Then - by using a PCI to IDE/SATA adapter - the same IDE drive will be put to work on a socket 1700 platform using an Intel 13th Gen CPU. What can go wrong?

My first computer was a Gateway 486 DX/2 66 and Windows 95 was running very decent. BTW, 6:09 I remember that Half Life is somehow playable on a 486 CPU but you need at least a 133Mhz 5x86.

I'm only 5 minutes into the video and it's interesting. My main criticism is your narration style. It's probably not intentional, but at the end of a lot of sentences you raise the pitch of your voice to make them almost sound like questions. Once I noticed it I couldn't unhear it which made it harder to pay attention to the contents of the video.

Thanks for feedback. I hope that gradually my voice over skills will improve. After watching some of my older videos I believe that now I'm better... but not there yet... I don't have the occasion to speak English on a daily basis... and it's quite hard for me to perform...

Well, not many comments to this playground. But it's a real time machine to tell our younger self how would OS of 90s work with faster CPUs :-)))) Just remembering wasting evenings on numerous reinstallations of broken Windows because of installing lots of programms from counterfeight CDs bought in stalls and then shared among pals :-) How much we wished to have those CPUs. And then hopes just were cut off with the knowledge that there are SUN&SGIs with many CPUs and the bright future is so nearby :-))

I would like to see this computer have the Y2K update installed and have the differences pointed out. I watched someone make a video about that but it did nothing because the Win 95 computer that was used was running a much newer update from 2001 which is likely the last update made for Win 95.

Well, Y2K update is in reality a tiny patch, you don't notice it... A very important update for Windows 95 is Internet Explorer 5.5. This update will make Windows 95A as compatible as Windows 98 when it comes to 32bit software. For example I can run HWiNFO 32bit a software from 2023... on Windows 95A from 1995... but only after IE 5.5 is installed. IE 5.5 installation kit is about 80MB(with some language packs) almost the same as Windows 95 installation kit.

Nice video. Windows 95 is the last OS for a 486 CPU. Anything newer is killing the CPU. In theory Win 95 should work with a 386 DX but in my opinion is just a nightmare.

I used a PCI-E to PCI adapter, because one PCI slot is not enough for Windows 95 compatible hardware. To make Windows 95 work is mostly related to patches: patchmem, cregfix, fixcpu... I'm planning to get an industrial ATX socket 1700 motherboard with 4 PCI slots to make everything easier when using Windows 9X/NT.

@@O_mores I have a pcie to pci card adapter too and Windows 98 uses PCIE Slots properly.

@@classicmgammer You can use PCI-E hardware in Windows 95 too, if you have drivers... I have a PCI-E to USB card that works in Windows 95 OSR2. Anyway Windows 98SE is better at managing PCI/PCI-E devices.

Hmm, could you do a video on running modern Linux on late 90s hardware? I tried getting an i386 Linux distro running on my K6-2 and 2+ machines, unfortunately it kernel panics citing architecture incompatibility. Intel would probably work better. I'm looking at building a Celeron 533 system, it should be fun to overclock by 50% and see how it does with modern talks.

This video helped me run Win 95 on the Asus Pro H410-C board, paired with old parts as well for video and sound to create a somewhat retro music production setup. Been subbed to your channel since I've discovered this! I am having big problems with DirectX however, as I need it for certain tasks in audio. After installing, it is stuck in a reboot loop and it's fairly bugging me out a bit. Don't know if you'll be able to come across this comment but I am needing some help. What can I do?

What DX ver are you using? Initially DX came with updated drivers for some classic peripherals. For example, it will update drivers for some Soundblaster cards or even S3 video cards. Depending on how old are your old parts - such a driver update can cause trouble. I experienced this with an S3 Virge video card. Also Windows 95 is not the best at managing resources you should watch in Device Manager if there are any conflicts.

@@O_mores DirectX 5. The graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TurboCache which would be fully working with 32 bit color until I install DirectX 5. I've had to utilize several backups now because of this. Any version under DirectX 5 seems to install correctly but theyre too old of versions for what I'm looking to do. For better context, I'm after the Falcosoft Midi Player to work but I believe I need at least DirectX 5 (it makes use of directsound only). An error message stated so when I tried to run it.

@@bvazquez90 It may sound silly but did you tried with newer versions of DirectX? DirectX 8.0a released in 2001 is the last release compatible with Windows 95. I'm also afraid that TurboCache edition of your GeForce might bring more trouble. TurboCache means that there is less video memory on the card - but it can use RAM to increase video memory. (this thing can be done anyway - but Turbocache editions will present 128 or 256MB RAM like it's already on the board, including diagnostic software)

@@O_mores Writing this reply straight after doing what you suggested. Windows 95 is caught in a reboot loop with DirectX 8 too unfortunately. I was still able to boot in Safe Mode however. At the time I didn't want to have to restore my backed up drive image. I uninstalled the graphics card from the Device Manager and I was able to reboot into Windows 95 successfully, sans 256, 16 bit or 32 bit color. Given your explanation to what you believe might be happening with current graphics drivers when installing DirectX, it probably makes sense. I'm going to attempt to reinstall the NVIDIA drivers and I can let you know of the outcome afterwards.

Does the Yamaha work for games like vanilla Doom in this configuration?

If vanilla Doom means the original DOS release by iD Software, most likely won't work. If you want to get DOS sound on modern hardware you should try SBEMU: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g6-Plrqj3J3dj2w.html However, DOOM '95 works 100% fine with sound on this configuration.

@@O_mores That's what I figured. I'm using a Sound Blaster Live on a P55 chipset and getting SB16 / Midi sound in Vanilla Doom and Duke3d in a 98SE DOS environment. Is that not possible on more modern hardware? And do you know when that stopped being possible?

PCI sound cards are relying on some PCI to ISA emulation done at chipset level to achieve Direct Memory Access (DMA) which is required to get sound in DOS. Gradually this kind of hardware support was terminated, I think Intel 865 released in 2003 is the last chipset where you can plug a PCI card and get sound in DOS games without any issues. There are also sound cards like Aureal Vortex which are using some very optimized PCI drivers and they still can work in pure DOS with some games even on modern hardware. I tested an Aureal 8820 on a i7-4790 and it worked in pure DOS with games like NQ Rally, Duke, Mortal Kombat IV, Screamer... (mostly newer DOS games) However many PCI sound cards do have good Windows 9x drivers with legacy support and they work with many DOS games while you are running them in Windows.

Yes, of course. But it's not the same thing as on real hardware. I mean I can use in Windows 95 a Creative Sound Blaster Live, an ATI GPU and so on... All it takes is to fill some unused PCI/PCI-E slots and a spare SSD with Windows 95 on it.
