Does the Yamaha work for games like vanilla Doom in this configuration?
@O_mores
@O_mores 2 күн бұрын
If vanilla Doom means the original DOS release by iD Software, most likely won't work. If you want to get DOS sound on modern hardware you should try SBEMU: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g6-Plrqj3J3dj2w.html However, DOOM '95 works 100% fine with sound on this configuration.

@@O_mores That's what I figured. I'm using a Sound Blaster Live on a P55 chipset and getting SB16 / Midi sound in Vanilla Doom and Duke3d in a 98SE DOS environment. Is that not possible on more modern hardware? And do you know when that stopped being possible?

PCI sound cards are relying on some PCI to ISA emulation done at chipset level to achieve Direct Memory Access (DMA) which is required to get sound in DOS. Gradually this kind of hardware support was terminated, I think Intel 865 released in 2003 is the last chipset where you can plug a PCI card and get sound in DOS games without any issues. There are also sound cards like Aureal Vortex which are using some very optimized PCI drivers and they still can work in pure DOS with some games even on modern hardware. I tested an Aureal 8820 on a i7-4790 and it worked in pure DOS with games like NQ Rally, Duke, Mortal Kombat IV, Screamer... (mostly newer DOS games) However many PCI sound cards do have good Windows 9x drivers with legacy support and they work with many DOS games while you are running them in Windows.

Programmable graphics chip before shaders. With just a little bit more performance it could become a real competitor to fixed pipeline chips. I wonder if it would be possible to have more than one DSP on single card and how the performance would scale.

There are some articles about Mpact 2 chip as early as November 1996 - but the card was on the market in 1998, it was too late and this basically killed the entire company. If drivers would have been ready in late 1996 - it think this card could have been a good competitor for 3dfx Voodoo Rush which was 30% faster but it had compatibility problems with many games and no MPEG2 decoding.

Like a fever dream, I barely remember this era of hardware. I guess PCs were so weak that you needed additional hardware just to watch a DVD. IIRC, 512x384 performed better than 400x300 on the Permedia 2 due to something with the texture memory. I was using D3D wrappers for a lot of things until OpenGL 2.1 started getting used on eveything...maybe the late 2010s? Scitech GLDirect was worth the cost back in the these days of mega janky hardware.

Yes, back at mid 90s, late 90s you would need a decoder card to play DVDs as a Pentium II at 233 MHz was too weak for that task, however with the Pentium III 500 MHz you would be able to play DVDs by software decoding, with some screen tearing, but also at that time most video cards would start to include dvd acceleration (motion compensation) to help the cpu.

I guess it's doable, but also you might consider performing a fresh Windows 95 install, do every upgrade necessary and save *Windows + Program Files foleders + root files* into a zip - then you can unload that zip onto a fresh DOS bootable partition. If something goes bad you just replace Windows folder with the one from the zip. I do it all the time. If you make this move on a different hardware, it will work, Windows just have to discover your devices once again. I know that a fresh installation can give you a certain peace of mind... but from my experience using a preinstalled Windows folder is practically the same.

I've been having great struggles trying to run this on my H410 motherboard.. I do not have one of those bootable VIA PCI cards that you have showcased in this video and others, so I tried to make an installation on a virtual machine, attempt to install UniATA for next boot, clone the vhd onto a physical hard drive and try and boot with the drive ultimately connected to the motherboard. This worked when I made my Windows 2000 installation, but for NT 4.. even after making sure I did everything right as instructed from Alter's guide online, I have had no luck. I even tried installing from MS DOS, with the I386 folder copied onto the drive. Prior to preparing the MS-DOS installation I attempted to slipstream the UniATA driver. A message appears stating it cannot find 'uniata.sys', the very driver I attempted to slipstream, before the installation even begins. Any suggestions on what else I could do, or is it one of those situations where a VIA storage controller card is absolutely needed?
@O_mores
@O_mores 17 күн бұрын
When you get the message with cannot find "xxxxfile.sys" you can manually copy the file into temporary installation folders (those starting with $BT/$LS) and you won't get that message when you restart the installation. With uniata.sys - even if you bypass this message - this does not guarantee that your drive can be initialized. Most likely you will get 0x07B. From my experience, during setup UniATA works only with known controllers. For example UNIATA will recognize my VIA 6421 PCI to SATA because the ID hardware is already embedded in the driver. But won't work with an unknow SATA controller, like the one I have on my H610 motherboard. In this case the solution is to install UniATA while Windows NT4 is installed and running. It worked for me. If you want, I can give my NT4 folder with UniATA already installed.

Well, in Windows 9x you don't need very specific chipset drivers, everything will be pretty standard based on x86 architecture and Basic Input Output System... (BIOS). This is enough to have disk access, keyboard and mouse input, display output etc. Next if you use the right hardware with Win 95 drivers you can get a full experience. There are universal AHCI drivers that will deal with the SATA ports - and these are like the only chipset drivers. Also on Core 2 Duo and first generations of Core i moterboards (up to 4th Gen - Haswell) you can get USB support by using NUSB drivers.

Either you a have a crazy gaming motherboard or something more business oriented like this Asus H610M- C D4 motherboard I'm using in this video - you end up with an AMI BIOS. Being the only provider did cause trouble in Windows 9x world. A tiny bug in AMI BIOS CSM module caused all Windows 9x installations to crash into a "VCACHE Windows Protection Error" That's why "cregfix" is needed on modern hardware, generally anything released 2020+.
