"We consider love to be a relationship. We consider love to be a feeling that takes place between two people. Love is not a relationship. Love is the dissolution of relationship, it is the collapse of relationship. It is not possible to love another person. In the experience of love the self and the other dissolve. That's why Rumi said this beautiful thing, he said: 'True lovers never really meet. They're in each other all along.' Love is not a meeting of two people. It is the dissolution of the apparent separation between self and other and a revelation of the prior unity of these two apparently separate selves So love is not an experience that the separate self has, it is the dissolution of the separate self, the revelation of reality, the revelation of consciousness. Consciousness is love." ~ Rupert Spira

I am a little confused by the end of this speaking... What do you mean exactly by "losing it"? Threats? Verbal abuse? Physical abuse...? "Losing it with him was an expression of my love and deepest understanding" - Surely anger or hatred cannot ever be an expression of love? Love is... love, it cannot ever be anything else. If anything, your sons actions (of course I cannot know the extent of them) would be a test to your self of maintaining... love

+1ferrozoica Anger and hatred, as well as parental discipline for that matter, are all only ever expressions of love. Anger and hatred may be love of self, in action, or possibly an immature rendering of love of self. All of our "emotional states" are only "lesser degrees" of Love, usually showing up as "love of self".

I find this difficult to comprehend... Is fear a "lesser degree" of love? Surely actions born of fear cannot ever be love. You can believe that they are (stemming from the false self) but that does not make it so. Rape, murder etc are always justified in some way by the perpetrator (except perhaps in the case of psychopaths) but because I believe an action to be justified does not make it so

The observation here is that all "negative" emotions are simply conditional, egoic, contracted, "immature" forms of love, usually for the ego self. We could call it the "primary/fundamental narcissism'; we could say that the ego is really only love for itself. Yes, fear is a "contraction" due to love of self and the corresponding defensive physiological reactions. This fear reaction could be rational or irrational depending on the reality of the perceived threat which triggers it. This is not in any way an attempt at the moral justification of these emotions or any corresponding negative behavior; that is a completely different set of distinctions.

+R. Valentine As far as I understand self-love or total selfishness when taken to its extreme can only be love for all. Self and other, subject and object. To conceptualise the self is to separate it. You only love yourself in terms of other. How would you define love? Do you think there is such a thing as pure love?

The word "Knowing" here is not such a good description, Awareness is better I think. We all look from the same "Knowing"/Awareness at experience , but we all can interpret the same experience differently. Knowing/Awareness does not care for interpretation, only person/ego does.
