I visited these Northern California towns: Redding, Mt Shasta City, Weed & Yreka. Afterwards, Nicole and I had dinner at Redding's landmark restaurant, Jack's Grill.

The summers may be hot, but the creeks, rivers and lakes make up for it. My childhood was filled every summer with spending time swimming, camping, walking to town and bike riding to the plunge for a day of fun. On the way home I'd stop at Hinkle's Market to get a a pop. Great memories♡

41:02 Back around 2010 we visited northern California and southern Oregon. After spending a day visiting the Redwoods it was getting dark and we stopped at a bar southeast of Eureka. My wife said the place looked a little sketchy so my son and I went in and scoped it out. Everyone including the bartender had a gun strapped to their hip, I felt right at home. I told my wife and daughter to come in and we were welcomed as if we were long lost friends. I asked if they had a menu but the bartender said every night they put out a potluck dinner and if you want food put some money in the kitty. The food was phenomenal. I mentioned that I always thought California frowned on firearm ownership and what did the local law enforcement think about everyone being armed. The bartender pointed out a man at the end of the bar and said that was the local sheriff, he just looked at me and smiled. We ran into similar circumstances in almost every western state. I've noticed that the big cities and a narrow strip along the interstates are blue, everything else is as red as can be. Another cool tour, thanks much!

I live in Redding and a retired truck driver. My route was from Redding to Yreka and stopping in Mt Shasta to also unload daily. Yreka was never like that. That encampment is something more recent. I think the county is struggling because of the lack of any sort of industry in the Yreka area. They don’t have the tourism dollars like Mt Shasta. Things changed drastically since Covid. Especially in the attitudes of government. We have all the same issues as the big cities on smaller scales. Lots of illegal grows in the surrounding areas and big drug issues with the transient populations. We however live in a beautiful area we need to get crime under control. The state has made grave errors in their bills easing consequences for crime. Small towns with little to no income feel it the worst.

I strongly believe the high cost of housing has driven people out into the streets. My dad one said, “One day people who have paid their houses off will no longer be able to pay their taxes and will become homeless”! Here we are. People in my town are really struggling and many rely on our food bank and meat ministry because they can’t afford groceries. I bought my house 10 years ago and since the value of my house trippled. Rents are rediculously high. You would expect these rents in big cities but not in the most isolated rural town in all of Idaho.
@Abbybabby29

In California, they have section 8 housing. The other thing is I live in Sacramento. I am from the east Bay area. I could never in 1 million years afford to live there again so I don’t even attempt to. There might be multiple reasons why someone doesn’t move, but if you cannot afford to live somewhere move where you can don’t stay there and live on the street. The other thing is our local police department just went through and talk to 87 homeless people one person took them off on the many offers they gave them for multiple agencies to help them, so they need to get them off the street they need to be supervised housing. Drug rehab, counseling etc I don’t think it’s acceptable to leave mentally ill people on the street. I think it’s cruel and disgusting and I would think most of them are from what I’ve seen.

Also CA has Prop.13- your prop taxes cannot go up by more than I think 3% a year from your purchase price UNLESS you do massive additions or renovations, add a bath or more than a room. It protects exactly those needing it in their original homes but not those who have money to burn on big improvements
@sgraham4533
@sgraham4533 Ай бұрын
@@seaneendelong8065 Thank goodness for Prop 13. I wouldn't be in my home if it wasn't for that proposition. I just paid off my home this month. Lots of people and agencies want to abolish that prop because they don't think it's fair and the state wants the additional $$. However, if that prop is abolished there will be a lot more foreclosures and homeless. It takes sacrifice (being fiscally conservative and responsible) to own a home. I hear from a lot of parents that their kids can't afford homes; but those same kids are spending their money on new iphones every time a new model comes out, elaborate vacations, new clothes, expensive dining, and they live for a Pinterest indulgent lifestyle. They don't want to sacrifice. Plus, they only want to live in high class towns with no commute. I'm 54 and I've had to commute for 34 years; been in my house for 27 years and am still "fix'n" it up.
@BirdDogey1
@BirdDogey1 Ай бұрын
California passed Prop 13 back in the 70s. It protects people from the rising cost of property tax. Housing inflation drives up the property tax on purchases. However, you don't suffer under increasing property tax once you've bought it. In fact, you can leave your home to your kids and the tax won't go up so long as they don't sell it.

On December 23rd, 1970 , I was 18 years old and traveling from Monterey CA to Salem Oregon with my new husband and my 17 year old brother to visit my parents who had deserted us in CA to move to Oregon. We wanted to spend Xmas with them. Unfortunately, a huge snowstorm closed the highway at Weed and our Volkswagon bug quit during the storm because the engine cover was chopped. We spent 2 days in Weed getting the car fixed and I'll never forget how kind the motel and car shop were to these infantile travelers.

There are homeless in virtually every town, they just werent shown in this video of Redding. If a town is civil and makes any attempt to help the homeless population they will be overrun in the extreme very quickly. Chasing the homeless around like they are stray dogs and not letting them settle anywhere is the usual plan of attack. CA is livable more or less year round, of course homeless head here rather than freeze to death in other states.

During the late 80’s and thru the 90’s we passed through Redding regularly, on one occasion we stopped at the park to have a cup. That lasted about 5 minutes and Reddings finest arrived issuing noise violation citations, gotta love it we thought ❤️

I'm not sure why you call them Reddings finest when all it takes to get hired is a heartbeat and a high school diploma. I'm sure there's some good people amongst that crew but I'm sure with those standards there's also some bad ones. Kind of like the military. Except in the military they get rid of the bad apples because they don't have a union protecting them.
@NBZW
@NBZW Ай бұрын
@@meghancass3187 So I’m assuming of course, a high school graduate doesn’t qualify, only college will be acceptable. In that case you need to research the study the military did in the 70’s in an attempt to find why so many were failing the academy entrance examinations. A 1940 California high school diploma was the equivalent of a 1955 state university minor graduate, doesn’t say much for the education system today...So much for that. Now, The city’s finest, has always been a reference to the Police Department, at least in my 90 years. Another small item I wish too add: we no longer have a system of education it is now a system of indoctrination.

I lived in the Redding Area for 25 years. Had dinner at Jack's Grill and saw John Mayall at the Cascade Theater. Back in 1987 I hiked up to the top of Mount Shasta. The view from the top was amazing. I look forward to your next video Jack.

One of my favorite videos from you. I have been to every town you visited and still learned something about every place. I always laugh when I pass through Weed and wondered how Yreka came up with their unusual name, and never in a million years could I have imagined it was from bakery spelled backwards. Enjoy Oregon and I really hope you visit Bend, as that is one of my favorite places and a place I know you and Nicole will love.

Siskiyou county where Mt. Shasta, Weed & Yreka is one of the biggest Marijuana growing & cultivation industry in California! Besides many fires that have displaced families from the Happy Camp mountain community near there, many young people came up to that part of the state to make a fast buck harvesting the smoke. Besides the northern costal towns between Humboldt to Del Norte County being large Marijuana growing areas, Siskiyou is , too, and I think that has contributed to the large encampment of homelessness in Yreka. So sad but true.

A lot of that is way west from Redding though. It's too hot here Mt Shasta and the weather is too harsh there. California is a huge state, so pot growing is much farther west for the most part.

The scenes in Jack's freaked us out!! We lived just south for 15 years and the wife and I had many a steaks at the same table you were at!! We used to call it our table, and now its a KZfaq star. If you make it as far as Washington, follow the Columbia River on route 4 from Longview west. Lots of Lewis and Clark stuff including Dismal Nitch where they sheltered from a storm. Along the way there is a charming little town named Cathlamet which was settled by James Birnie.

Another very nice video. All the towns had some very nice housing. The cost of living in Yreka is probably influenced by the high crime rate. I'm not a fan of snow so these towns don't tempt me. I grew up in Utah too and am glad to live in the Texas Hill Country. Driving in snow, as you mentioned in the video, isn't fun. It sounds like your limp is back a little. I struggle with my legs myself. The food looked great. It is good you are closing upon the half million subscriber mark as eating out like that is a tad bit pricy. Your income from KZfaq should be covering the bill nicely. Thanks again for another entertaining video. The cats were indeed a nice bonus. We have a Himalayan Blue Point here at the house and a Chihuahua, the state dog of Texas :) Looking forward to the next video.

As modern architecture goes, the Shasta County Courthouse is relatively attractive. Definitely like the post office. Bradford Pears were blooming everywhere in Maryland weeks ago. I work in a garden center and occasionally have customers looking to buy one and I have to tell them that we don’t sell them-haven’t for years. They’re like dandelions, beautiful but insidious weeds.

$48 for a steak in a town with a high poverty rate. My aunt was married to John who was born and raised in Yreka. He hated it, never wanted to go back. His father owned the only pharmacy in town and was prosperous. I visited his father's home in Yreka in around 1980. The home was very nice and it was obvious that he was privileged. I believe the home was on the perimeter of the park at 36:50 of the video. I was in Yreka for the dedication of headquarters of the US Forest Service which the father had been involved with in some way.

Thanks for the tour of Redding. Except for visiting the Sun Dial Bridge, it has always been a place to drive through on my way to Lassen or further north. At 19:50--Black Butte has always fascinated me, I'd love to see the view from up top someday. While Weed isn't named for the "herb", they certainly don't shy away from trading on the association. I doubt any of the "I Love Weed" trinkets in the gift shops are sold to people who want to remember Abner 🙂 Speaking of Mark Twain, the Francis of Assisi quote brings to mind a saying of his I think is also appropriate: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." See you in Oregon next time!
