I laughed so hard when I realized almost 40% of the podcast is gaijin's therapy session for his Playstation sleep paralysis demon. It was a bit a shame that Stories 2 was not discussed a bit more, in which I would say it's understandable as there is only demo content to discuss now and going nostalgic on the first game would kind of left Ruri out of loop. I personally cannot wait till Ruri plays the entirety of Stories 2 so that you get the whole experience of Stories and discusses it.

This was SUCH an entertaining podcast! Thanks for moderating and fueling such a great conversation Ruri! So many great points of interest were brought up here. 1) Vibing with Gaijin's Sony tirade; completely agree! They're totally dropping the ball. And as someone who was once never interested in xbox, I'm loving their current renaissance! 2) The comment from Capcom regarding all the MHR DLC is extremely disappointing. Regardless of how it was intended to be read, it doesn't change how pathetic the event quests are (now and roadmap) vs the landslide of paid DLC. 3) Talking Gaijin Palico is a WIN! 3) Please bring Shepard back soon, absolutely LOVE hearing all three of you!

I cannot do math. I struggled my entire life, no matter how hard I tried, even though I stayed after school for tutoring with my teacher. They gave me the minimum passing grade bc they pitied me and I had perfect attendance and did homework. But I failed EVERY test. I have dyscalculia and numbers/formulas get all jumbled in my brain 🤯. Even after being diagnosed with ADHD, they never got me extra time for test taking like they said, but tbh it wouldn't help for math.

First monster that showed me the ropes back on MHFU was Tigrex. It was my first monster hunter game I ever played. I was using long sword. But I got wrecked by tigrex. Nothing I could do helped me win. The lesson I learned from that fight is, not all weapons are good vs all monsters. Once I built a gunlance, and I could block tigrex’s attacks, I finally got my win. Which started my long love affair with gunlance!

Catching up on old episodes now that I’ve finished MHS2 (it was great). Loved this episode; probably my favorite of the bunch up until this point. Everyone in the room is an expert and knows what they’re talking about, and with such a breath of topics too. So fun to hear all the banter on movies and other games. I just bought Dragon’s Dogma for $9 on my PS5. Ready to boot it up later tonight. Also sourcing a PSVita for soul sacrifice (seen all the content on Gaijun’s channel). Very excited about that too. Rise Ultimate is definitely gonna be DLC that will have it's own subtitle, like Iceborne. You can also buy MHR with the expansion bundled with (though it will probably be separate download due to cartridge size limit). Rise with DLC will be sold for the normal game price, Rise alone will get 25-40% price cut and DLC will be 29-39 bones separately. And it will include whatever they wanna call G rank in this gen.

For me math in monster hunter IS relatively simple. The problem is, there is only specific situations where I'd actually need that stuff. And it's really easy to end up in a rabbit hole with all the buffs the game has and how to optimize damage that it CAN start to feel overwhelming. I like to keep things quite simple. Not even considering motion values or anything overly complex. Generally I do fine with knowing monster hitzones, my true raw/element and how many hits a sharpness I have. Some interesting things are things like counting hits to break parts, cause paralysis or poison, but anything beyond those it gets a bit too much. Motion value isn't something that's truly necessary outside of knowing your main combo either.

I'm a teacher in Seoul and I sympathise with what Gaijin is saying. Seating lottery is just a cop-out that takes the responsibility off the teacher. That being said... You absolutely, 100%, can not just "put the problem kids at the back and put the kids who want to learn at the front". That is *one* step away from saying "This 12 year old has different learning needs to my daughter, so prioritise her." Not cool, and most definitely not the move. No 12 year old child is equipped to decide whether or not they "want to learn", nor is it our job to make that distinction.

If anything, you move the “problematic” ones closer to you (the teacher) and think of how you can give them roles in the class that will interest them while also benefitting the class at large. Classroom management can be difficult, but failure to do so appropriately negatively impacts all of the students. Putting “bad” kids in the back so they can do whatever they want while the “good” kids listen intently to you just shows that if any “good” kid didn’t want to respect you anymore, nothing bad would come to them. The weak short term fix will cause most students to lose respect in the mid to long term. Weak teachers sometimes chance upon success in the classroom. Strong teachers engineer it.

As a math teacher, I find the start of this episode really interesting. I think the thing with Math is that it's not really about being able to calculate the numbers. I think it's much more important to understand what the numbers mean, so you don't even need to calculate anything to see which weapon is better for example (unless the difference is minor) I think a good example is the misconception that crit is better on weapons that hit more often, because you crit more often (In the absolute sense; %-wise there's no difference of course). However, this only applies if you monster dies is less than 20 hits or so and even then it only means your damage variates less; (on average the damage is the same). Large monsters take way more than 20 hits though.

GH and Shepard, both of my original teachers for MH! Nice. On the topic of math: I've gotten over it by now, but up until I was 23 or so I had an actual mental block as soon as I saw formulas written out. Like actual mind = blank moments. I actually almost failed one of my classes because of it around that time. Why? Because my math education was absolutely horrible. I always needed to start cramming months in advance for tests, I had to take private lessons, and I still only barely scraped by. My middle school math teacher was an abusive piece of shit that would bully people that weren't up to par. So everything with numbers became a blur. It wasn't until I got deeper into games like competitive Pokemon and Monster Hunter that this mental block was lifted. The moment I learned I could actually apply math in a field I enjoyed to get better, that was the moment I snapped out of it. With World and Rise it's not as big of a deal, but before damage numbers were a thing, knowing where to strike with what motion based on the numbers presented to me was a big deal. So yeah, if anyone in school wants to overcome their math hate, maybe start with Monster Hunter calculation. That stuff is something you like, so it may just act like a gateway drug. And trust me - once I overcame my most hated subject, my school life became quite a bit better too - lessening learning-related stress can do wonders. By the way: I HATED the teaching profession for most of my life. Nowadays I'm just very critical of it because teachers can make or break a kid mentally VERY easily. As a result, I loved my great teachers (I had... 3... great ones throughout my entire education) but loathed the bad ones. People who are great at it, I look at like I look at Monster Hunter speedrunners - it's a tough job and now I know it and I could never do it properly.

I only started getting good at maths when I started DMing for D&D when i could visually and physically see the math layed infront of me with the dice. I had terrible teachers for maths and even when i worked as a baker I struggled despite having decent teachers (maths is a huge part of bread making and if you get stuck you can loose your job). But it's interesting when you do maths in something you are interested in you're more likely to pick it up and get better with it but maths isn't the easiest subject to teach students who are visual kestheic learners and untill that changes problems learning it are always going to be present.

I think Rise Ultimate is going to make everyone eat their words. People forget that the last game of every generation has been extremely stacked with content. MHFU had a G-Rank weapon for every path in the game and at least three viable, best in slot type weapons for every weapon archetype, even more for weapons that were elementally viable. MH3U still retains a relatively active community, and what it lacked in pure volume it made up for in innovation across the board, from new weapons, to new moves, to new monsters; entire categories of new monsters. And that isn't to say it lacked in content either. Easily comparable to all of Iceborne, in my opinion. And we haven't even mentioned MHGU. 70 different ways to play across fourteen weapons, almost every monster ever added to the previous generations, not to mention a mass of new ones. I doubt there's anyone on this planet that has done even close to all of the content in GU. If the trend continues, then Rise Ultimate is going to be an absolute banger, and a fitting end to the fifth generation.

I think the way to fix elemental damage is through monster behavior, not trough "increasing elemental damage". I'm fine with certain weapons having stronger DPS through elemental. What I'm not ok with is that element does absolutely nothing for other weapons. Now rise does have the monster specific elemental blights they can get afflicted by, but those are through utside means, not trough your weapon. I think elemental blights and certain monster behaviors like "reaction to ice or fire" should be a thing. Maybe by afflicting a monsters leg with enough ice element it slows doen that part of the monster, or makes it easier to break that part. There are dynamic things you can do with element that would help you as a hunter, but wouldn't maybe effect the "meta chasers" who would still just hit the head doe to being the best hitzone. Now you could say that bows and dual blades would still benefit the most out of this system as they output the most element, not necessarily. Not if the dynamic elemental reactions were tied to another "status bar" similar to exhaust. Exhaust in my opinion is one of the best "hidden behaviors" that monsters have, simply because it can behave in tandem with rage and makes monsters "unpredictable" due to that.

I've fought Ruiner Nergigante so many times with Charge Blade that I didn't even know it was such a big hassle. The shield helped quite a lot, especially against the roar followed by the aerial slam.

I found Ruiner to be annoying with Dual Blades where there are no counters or shields. You have to I-frame dodge the roar or you'll get hit by the following slam, his quick jabs may barely do damage but they stop you in place, which is fine with weapons with shields or immediate counters but with Dual Blades it sets you up to get hit by the following attack. I love Normal Nergigante as a Dual Blades main but Ruiner Nergigante is a horrible matchup for the weapon.

The association I have with A and B for buttons. A: Accept B: Back I totally get Gaijin's rage with the flipping the buttons though. I can accept when buttons are flipped position-wise between consoles. Though I remember playing Call of Duty Black ops on the Wii. If you were using a classic controller, all the controls were mapped to match the Xbox and PlayStations button positions rather than the labels. Which results in the game telling you to press B to accept things and A to go back. I hated it so much.

Jep Rise is great When your favorit weapon is elementel phial charge blade is just so rewarding to play, The Water charge blade is especially great for element phial "jyuratodus charge blade". But will All that you can do more phial dmg on specific monster with fire element, not sure if the monster with a fire element weakness just have better hit zones or just a greater elementel weakness

Has that JAKOB Dos video become infamous within the MH community or something? I think it was interesting and had some valid, compelling points such as regarding Monster Hunter World's narrative.
