I thought of some other Rush lines when you were talking about GorgonTheHybrid's persistence..."Leave out the fiction, the fact is this friction will only be worn by persistence, Leave out conditions, Courageous convictions, Will drag the dream into existence". Powerful lyrics written by the great lyricist...Neil Peart, from the song Vital Signs.

When I got into Rush in 1981, they had a ton of fans, but they were also hated by a lot of people, and being a Rush fan could be rough as a kid. Such amazing vindication to see them in the RRHOF, and to see generations of people who weren't even born yet back then get into and fall in love with their music. Also, back then it was pretty much white guys in the audience, so to see so many women and POC do reaction videos and totally love them is heartwarming, as it should be music for all people who appreciate quality soul-stirring music! Rush on! Peace & Love! ~Gary

Me too! I was like 14. On the same day I bought The Shining (book) and Farewell to Kings. I was reading the book listening to the album in the house alone. I flipped it to side 2 and kept reading. The book had me scared pretty bad and all of a sudden my stereo started with those tubular bells and the distorted voice. I literally screamed, threw the book up in the air and fell off my bed.

Hemispheres was my favorite Album in High School. I went into the Navy in 81, and was at Sub School in New London CT in Jan/Feb of 82. I was very homesick, by myself in the barracks , looking across the roof tops of the base, on a cold, wet January Day., probably a Sunday. “A boy alone so far from home, endless rooftops from my window. I felt the gloom of empty rooms on rainy afternoons” from Circumstances played through my mental jukebox(Neil phrase). I felt it so deeply it’s hard to explain. Rush laid the soundtrack to my life after that. Hemispheres will always be one of my favorite Albums.

Can you imagine having Book I on one album and then you had to wait for the release of the next LP to hear Book II?! And Rush named Cygnus X-1 a “Black Hole” before Science was able to make it official. In 1974, Stephen Hawking made a bet with Kip Thorne that it was NOT a black hole but he really hoped they could prove that it was. The wager was settled in 1990 but there’s more info still surfacing about Cygnus X-1. Rush was ahead of the curve on the Science. Thanks. ✨☄️🤪

Good job guys and bravo to Alexia for dealing with your back pain through that epic. Amazing to end Farewell to Kings with Book 1 and open Hemispheres a year later with Book ll...crazy concept. Really looking forward to you two getting into their 80s to early 90's stuff in the future. Even as their sound changed somewhat they still produced a bunch of great albums/songs. Presto and Roll the Bones are fantastic albums throughout, while Power Windows, Grace Under Pressure and Signals etc. all had mulitple good tracks. Geddy's voice matured a bit as they evolved as a band and their musical influences changed. That's what made Rush who they were...a band that could change with the current influences of the times throughout the decades and keep producing good music that was relevant at the time..and maybe moreso 40+ years later. Kudos to you both.

Holy smokes. So happy to hear the two of you react to these classics. Hemispheres is Rush’s prog masterpiece. This record was incredibly difficult to record. That difficulty led to Permanent Waves and an attempt to be more powerful in shorter songs. Significantly important to the development of the band. Now, I highly suggest a live stream reaction to the Clockwork Angels album in it’s entirety. This is Rush’s final album, their only true concept album, the album they’re most proud of and a damn masterpiece. The Garden will have you (and all of us) in tears. Lastly, Lex is a warrior! Although, I would suggest she stay off that horse. He obviously wants no part of being rode! Appreciate the perseverance Lex! Thank you both once again for a great testimony!

Neil's lyrics to Book 2 were a reflection of how he was always striving to balance his logical, rational, thinking left brain with his sensitive, compassionate, feeling right brain, similarly to how I've been striving to balance my sensing/thinking left brain with my intuitive/feeling right brain. And Lex, I feel your pain; I have recurring lower back pain myself, and what I've found to help includes sleeping on my left side with my knees bent towards my chest, and doing yoga twice a week. Hemispheres as an album is RUSH's masterclass. Perhaps not as popular as Moving Pictures or Permanent Waves, but the album is a perfect 10 in every way. Hemispheres as a song is simply breathtaking. This song really shows how under-appreciated Alex Lifeson truly is. From the pinch harmonics in Prelude to the ripping solos to his amazing dissonant chord structures... just truly brilliant. Listen to it a few more times, loud and with headphones on.. you'll discover something new every time you listen to it.

Well, a perfect 6. Side one is crap that I can't listen to with anyone else without them wanting to get out of the car but side 2 is a masterpiece. Cygnus X-1 and 2 while being technical, have some interesting bits, etc.... is not something I can play with my wife in the car. Trees and La Villa Strangiatto on the other hand are. I used to listen to Gentle Giant in the 70s. I found that none of my friends likes it though regardless of me finding their music very technical. I've never listened to them since. In the end music is art. Most people with a good background in music will listen to La Villa Strangiatto and be highly impressed. I mean I went out and bought every Rush album after I heard that (the album just came out). My background in musical taste is classical, jazz, rock, prog rock, fusion, new age, R&B and more. I can listen to ELPs live album "Welcome Back my Friends......", especially to the song Tarkus which on that live recording is 27 minutes long. I find it 27 minutes of bliss. But 5 minutes into any Cygnus crap and I want to wipe it off the disk but it's there because I have whole albums on my playlist. This isn't the kind of music a reaction video is good for. People make money off of their content. There needs to be some appeal to the music and it's only Rush die hards that tolerate these kinds of songs. Not a good way to start building a following.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

You have just reacted to the most proggy Rush song and a classic in the genre. Their creative peak in my view. The song opens with Alex' signature chord. “It's the opening chord from Hemispheres by Rush,” John Petrucci says. “It's the F sharp major with the added 4th and the flat 7. That should really be named 'the Alex Lifeson Chord,' because he invented that.”

There’s a certain kind of music lover that gets into RUSH. People either love them or hate them. I’m pretty sure it was 1977 with “Closer to the Heart,” that I got hooked. Then came “The Trees,” and so on… So I’ve been a RUSH fan since I was 12 and I’m 57. Wow!

Great reaction guys, now read up on the story and re-listen you will be amazed how much more you get out of it, because the music is great, but the marriage of the story and music is the true genius of Rush. That is what makes them the greatest, followed closely by DT. DT matches (at least) musically, but no one matches Neil lyrically.

To see the two of you look at each other, and then hold hands, was beautiful. This is what music can do. The spark still flies Reflected in another pair of eyes There is no other band like Rush; not only unique music and lyrics, but three inventive, articulate musicians who found each other in different ways and became friends who cared for and loved each other. Lex, take care of your back please. The livestream and now this marathon? You are a trooper! The Show must go on!

Back in the eighties, I used to play along with this masterpiece mostly on the Alex Lifeson guitar parts. But I couldn't resist the Geddy Lee bass riffs on so much of it. Many years later I have forgotten most instrumentally after years of other things. But those times were awesome and this brings back a spirit in me for Rush. Thank you for appreciating and communicating your experience of this whole piece. It is awesome!!!

I love both of these great pieces of music. Book I impresses me for the ways in which Rush used music to evoke the sense of drifting in the serenity of space, the looming terror of the concentrated forces of gravity at the edge of the black hole as it absorbs all, descending into the chaos of the event horizon as seen from the perspective of the venturers, and then - post-cataclysm - the eternal desolation (and seeming quiet) of space with its gravitational violence rehidden. Book II is, to me, more like an opera, with the introduction of the musical themes, before introducing the conflict between reason and love, and its resolution by Cygnus, the bringer of balance. The musical storytelling is only rivaled by Neil Peart's poetic lyrics. When you consider the other songs on "A Farewell to Kings" and "Hemispheres", which the Cygnus duo straddles, it is no wonder that the band, was exhausted after completing "Hemispheres," and that these two albums continue to be, for many Rush fans (self included) among the greatest albums of all time, not just for Rush but in general.

To be honest, the concept and message is relatively simple: two hemispheres, logical/emotional, a concept that has been used in literature since the dawn of time (I'm a college professor/ musician, music aficionado); but the music is beyond inspirational. Very unusual compositional structure with great variation in keys, dynamics, rhythms, time signatures---not for your average top 40 fan, but for the ages.

Book two will always be my favourite. I saw Rush a gazillion times, and once saw a tribute band play “Cygnus” in total. Until they did I didn’t realise. To listen to the piece as a whole, you begin with book 2, and at a certain point it blends into book 1. Book 1 is played all the way through, and then you segue into book 2 to the end. As soon as I got home I glued and pasted from the albums and made it myself. Next time I saw the tribute band I gave them a copy of it. Love your reactions to the stuff I grew up on. More ELP please (try Pictures at an Exhibition, live. Mind blowing. First vinyl LP I ever bought). Kudos to the seated warrior. I have mild back issues so I know a little of what you’re experiencing.

Rush can play every song they have ever recorded in concert. On this tour, they had a movie screen behind them that had a starship getting sucked into the black hole. 🚀 Cygnus is def one of their heaviest songs. Hemispheres is right up there with Close To The Edge.

Love both books, but especially 2. They have two other epics, both off their Caress of Steel album from 75. The Necromancer at over 12 minutes closes out side 1 and The Fountain of Lamneth at almost 20 minutes takes up all of side 2. They don't both need to be listened to in one sitting for the sake of Lex's back. Hope your back gets better

Rush is my #1 band ever. And this song is amazing. Your reaction is amazing. Alexia, I am so sorry to hear about your back problems. 😞 I have a small request, for an amazing band whose drummer recently died in a traffic accident: Could you please react to "Moron Police"? It's an amazing prog rock band from my country (Norway). Requested song: "Moron Police - Beware the Blue Skies." Very sadly, the drummer died in an accident in january of this year, electric scooter hit by a car. 😞At the very young age of 34. So I think, at least for his very amazing talent, we should pay tribute to him. He was AMAZING. Definitely the entire band was "rising star" in every sense of the word. Best album of 2019 in my opinion is "A Boat On The Sea" by Moron Police. You should also check the band's youtube page, as they have some camera footage from the drummer's perspective.

I really hope you enjoy the lyrics, as I sat here singing them to myself...this is some of the best early Rush! Geddy really used his voice to it's fullest, using vibrato on many high notes shows his vocal talents alone in just these songs! I'm a rhythm guy, drummer, so I always had major respect for his vocal chops as so many dismissed him!! Thank you both and GREAT JOB Lex!!! That is HARD!!!
