That bit you were dancing to was from was the 1936 song "Powerhouse". Of course Rush gave credit where it was due. Most of us know that from Loony tunes cartoons, whenever they showed a factory or some sort of Rube Goldberg machine.
@JohnBrooking4
@JohnBrooking4 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, what I read was that they didn’t give it credit initially, because they just didn’t know where it was from. They’re of the age that they probably heard it first on Looney Tunes, as I did. But they did step up and give the composer, Raymond Scott, credit after his estate contracted them about it. Scott was an interesting guy himself. He sold the rights to most of his 1930’s music to Warner Brothers, then went on to be an early pioneer in advent-garde electronic music in the 1950’s and ‘60’s. That Powerhouse bit has been used in tons of other songs, including by another of my favorites bands, They Might Be Giants (“Rhythm Section Want Ad”). The Wikipedia entry does has a huge listing of references. Raymond Scott’s original, quoted section starts at 1:14: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p8dzY9l_scqwpo0.html

When you consider that this album came in the middle of a stretch of nine epic releases in eight years from their debut in 1974 through Signals in 1982, it’s hard to think of another band who’s put out so much incredible and inspiring work in a lifetime, never mind in less than a decade. I’m lucky to have been an early adopter to this band, and can remember the time I played each of their albums through for the first time.

What was it like hearing a lot of this 60s and 70s music when it first came out? I heard of Rush before this album came out but I didn't have any of their albums. We had a couple great rock stations where I grew up that during off hours, mostly night they would play all KINDS of music including what you would call fusion, almost jazz. The first time I heard this I was driving alone after getting off work late in the eve, taking the Long Way Home, and THIS song comes on the radio. Now, the long way home was driving around a small lake, so almost no traffic, no lights, just a slow drive to calm the mind so just like a person who gets to lay on a bed and put on headsets and listen to this for the first time my brain was allowed to engage with the music, and having listened to classical, jazz, rock and prog rock through my childhood, this song was a musical feast. I proceeded to the record store the next week and bought every Rush album up until that point and learned the lyrics of almost every song on every album, except the first. I only liked about 3 or 4 songs off the first album.

So, the great thing about Rush, and I say this as a fan of the band for 40 years (since I was 11), is that while it's truly special to watch people like you hear this for the first time, this song, like much of their music, literally NEVER gets old. It's fantastic every single time. Their musicianship and creativity is incomparable, and it's a sheer pleasure every damn time! Write to me 40 years from now (God willing I'm still alive) and tell me I'm wrong. ;)

I have seen Rush live many, many times over the years. I'm still not over the fact that I will never see them again. Neil was one of the greatest ever, as are the rest of the band. I saw Lex get chill bumps during a song I have heard thousands of times. It made me cry. Nick and Lex, I've enjoyed watching your channel for a few weeks now. It was 1978 my HS grad year. It was as you imagined Lex. For me and my friends there was a sense that something very special was coming from our head phones, turntables and the 8-track decks of our cars. My first Rush concert was the year prior, "A Farewell to Kings" (1977) and nothing was gonna keep us from "Hemispheres" and a chance to see them play this epic live in 1978. Rush was and still is a San Antonio favorite. We never missed a show whenever they came our way. Our late great radio disc jockies would say, "Three guys from Canada......just three guys!" Can you beleive it. They surely made beleivers of us all. Thanks Nick and Lex

I remember when this came out! I had seen Rush in December of 1977, for the first time, on the A Farewell to Kings tour. That album ended with "Cygnus X-1, Book I" with a "to be continued" at the end. I knew that the Hemispheres album started with Cygnus X-1, Book II, but I had no idea what it would sound like. I was so enthralled with Rush at this point in my life -- I was 14 -- and I was a passionate drummer and Neil Peart fanatic (along with guys like Phil Collins and Bill Bruford). But...WOW...did Hemispheres take me on a mind-bending trip! And that was just side 1 of the album! Side 2 was incredible too but La Villa Strangiato just took it to a totally different level. I could not believe what I was hearing from my favorite Prog Rock 3-piece from Canada! OMG! Such memories!

Agreed, J.C.A. but I think they, like Yes, had to evolve to survive the "end times" of prog rock which saw its unfortunate fall from music stage after the horrid disco era. People just lost the capacity to patiently listen to great music unfold over the course of 10+ minutes or so. Rush did an excellent job morphing into a tremendous prog/rock hybrid band in the 80s and 90s and I personally enjoy much of what they played over some 20 years after "Moving Pictures."
