Nothing wrong with the bands you grew up listening to, STYX, BOSTON, ZEPPELIN, etc..., are great bands. BUT, RUSH is a completely different animal 😆. I'm glad you find them well worth the wait! ☮

The last part is a direct connection to Cygnus-X1. The protagonist goes through a black hole and is torn apart. He ends up in Olympus for his act of bravery. The little drum patterns and guitar riffs in the background that seem displaced are from part 1 to make the musical connection.

That CHORD you like - sometimes referred to as the Alex Lifeson chord is an F# plus 4 flat 7th A few years back, John Petrucci went out for a drive with the folks from Cosmo Music(opens in new tab). In the resulting Rockstars in Cars video, the Dream Theater guitarist talked about his favorite solo to play live, his mix of technical and emotional guitar playing, and more. Best question in the video: “Desert island chord: You got one chord you can play forever. What is it?” “It’s the opening chord from Hemispheres by Rush,” Petrucci replies. “It’s the F sharp major with the added 4th and the flat 7. That should really be named ‘the Alex Lifeson Chord,’ because he invented that.”

I trip out when you young guys listen to Rush for the first time. I'm 57 yrs old and this was my all time favorite band...still is. It took a long time for alternative rock to catch up. Honestly, their aren't too many bands that are that creative. Their creativity is what stifled them in the music industry for quite a few years up until the permanent waves album came out. They weren't heavily promoted. But their grass roots fans ,from the tons of touring that they did, is what garnered them album sales and the record execs finally succumbed to the brilliance that is Rush.

"They have a sense of humor with their choices" - hahahaha, you have no idea, John. These are three of the funniest people on the planet. Neil was the most serious of the three, but had a very dry humor that was incredible. Alex is basically a stand-up comedian with a guitar - watch his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction speech. Geddy was between the two - so focused on the music, but completely having fun with it. They challenged the listener on many levels, and I will love them forever for it! I am of their generation, and I feel they have been dear friends for over four decades.

The "cartoon" music segment was "borrowed" from their childhood memories, but later found out it was written in 1936 by a Hollywood { I think ] soundtrack composer. Rush's legal advisors inquired and it turned out the protection on the piece had expired, but the band sent the (then still living ) author a cheque...just because. Oh, those good Canadian boys, Eh?

The Cartoon segment came out in WB introduction to the Time Warner Frog. In the beginning of the cartoon its a shot of a city and there is some construction going on of a high rise building. Cranes moving, mechanical noises and that segment of LA Villa Strangeiato is playing in the background, very industrial sounding, but yeah that'd where it's from. A construction worker finds the frog singing some old timey tunes like Hello my darling, Hello my ragtime doll. And he plots to make money off the singing frog. But the frog would never perform for an audience no matter how much he tried.

Funny thing about your comment that everyone does a solo but the singer. The singer is the bassist and and keyboards and yes he's he plays both bass and keys while singing. The reason everyone has mentioned watching Xanadu - Exit Stage Left live is because it will answer all your questions. Yes, Neil plays a full percussion kit including: largest drum kit of the time, triangles, tubular bells, cow bells, wood blocks and a multitude of other percussion instruments. Alex Lifeson plays a double neck 12 and 6 string guitar plus for peddles. Geddy sings, has a double neck bass and six string and plays synth

Yes, Xanadu from Exit Stage Left is a must! You will see these guys in action! There are only three of them. Also, Cygnus X 1, The Fountain of Lamneth.. The song Circumstances, Neil Peart the drummer who was also the lyrist wrote this. It was before he joined Rush. He was frustrated that his drumming career wasn't going the way he wanted to so he moved to England for awhile and things didn't work out there as well. He moved back to Canada and later joined Rush. I think he was about 19 at the time. Did you notice the French phrases? La Villa Strangiato is about a series of nightmares that Alex Lifeson the guitarist had and yes that was old cartoon music in there. There was a copyright issue and even though the copyright had run out they still made a one time payment for using it. This album is truly a masterpiece! I know you mentioned synths but if you like something different please check out Jetho Tull where Ian Anderson rocks the flute! Locomotive Breath is a good one. Cheers

So a “post Prog” band that are this creative (yes, they’re still active, just released an album) that has excellent musicians, plenty of synths and lots of heart is the British band “Marillion”. If you can only listen to one, go with “Neverland”. Some songs, about one per album: “Script for a Jester’s Tear”, “Grendel” (1983), “Assassing” (1984), “Misplaced Childhood” (concept album, 1985), “Sugar Mice” (1987), “Easter” (1989), “Brave” (1989), “Estonia” (1997), “A Few Words for the Dead” (1998), “Interior Lulu” (1999), “This is the 21st Century” (2001), “The Invisible Man”, “Ocean Cloud”, “Neverland” (2004), “Whatever is Wrong With You” (2008), “Sounds That Can’t Be Made” (2012), “FEAR” (concept album, 2016) and “Murder Machines” (2022). Highly recommended.

The structure of Cygnus X-1, Book 2 is in the nature of an opera; the first segment introduces the musical themes that will be explored throughout the the balance of the piece. It is like symphonic rock, performed on rock instruments by three virtuoso musicians.

Damn right they’re telling a story. That’s why it’s important to read the lyrics, which were written almost exclusively by the drummer, Neil Peart. Alex (guitars) & Geddy(bass, lead vocals & keyboards) wrote the music. I am 63 & I have worshipped RUSH since I was 15. That’s over 40 years. Great to see you younger people discover the astonishing power of these 3 guys. The whole album of Hemispheres is about the 2 separate hemispheres of the brain. The emotional side & the reasoning & critical thinking side. One of the best albums ever made!! You should listen to the first side of their album “2112”. It was recorded in 1976 & the whole first side is one song with 7 separate parts. It’s over 20 minutes long and it will blow your mind. Peace & RUSH to you from an old RUSH rocker!! 🤘❤️🤘❤️

Thank you for doing the whole album. Listening to music can be a very deeply personal thing, but it is also very much a wonderful shared experience with other people. If you want to take on another Rush album, but one from there synthesizer dominant era I would highly recommend the Power Windows album. In the time of listening to individual songs, it is wonderful to find someone who is willing to go and have the entire album experience as bands of the past intended their songs to be experienced. Again, thank you, looking forward to the next one, keep up the great work.

It's pronounced "sig-ness" X-1 , an actual stellar body in fact.. You should have started with "A Farewell to Kings" before "Hemispheres" . " Kings" transitions into "Hemispheres" and a farewell to Kings is a damn good album in its own right, one of the top five easily . Top 3 for me but i'm 55 lol played guitar since I was five . Rush's "Fly By Night" was the album that got me hooked on music . And BYW those weren't pinch harmonics , just open harmonics . It's kinda cool watching some one beginning to discover RUSH . Happy journey my friend , it only gets better on so many levels .

Yes, I found those bits in the beginning funny too. :) *ding!* Full album reactions may take a lot of time, but that is how most of us heard them originally when they were released. I think that is more authentic to what the band meant for people to experience too in their song selection and order. For an album like Hemispheres with that long single sided masterpiece, I don't think it gets much better. :)

How wonderful to discover a new love with the entire discography available. Bittersweet, however, since there will be no more. You are doing the entire album, so kudos. Bands like Rush create entire albums where song order and styles are part of the whole. To be an olde farte(tm) -- and a smarte ass -- back in the day, there were things called "records" which had "album covers." They were a part of the package, especially the cover art. The inside covers or liner notes contained the answers to a lot of your questions... lyrics and especially about instrumentation. Neil's list was about 10 long lines. Geddy's list grew quickly over time. Interior photos showed Neil in a godlike nimbus of light, and Alex (left?) with Geddy (the other).

Yes Hemispheres is based on Greek mythology and per my previous comment, the protagonist goes through the black hole in Cygnus-X1 named Cygnus. Part 1 is based on an some research that Neil read about a real blackhole created by a distant star named Cygnus-X1.

This is the story of the age old battle between heart and mind (left and right brain - hemispheres) within each of us as well as collectively. In part one (from A Farewell to Kings, our hero falls into a black hole). In this part two he wound up in the mythical Olympus where he meets Dionysus and Apollo. They are sad about the state of affairs of the world they see through his eyes - a world splitting into warring hemispheres. The God of Cygnus symbolizes humankind's evolution into balance and a single perfect sphere (world). Neil Peart's writing is pure genius! Thanks for covering this song. I'm so glad you liked it!

Literally, Music of the gods This to me is the greatest album ever made by any band from any genre. I mean Close to the Edge sometimes takes its place at #1, but it definitely has its turn at #1. 2112 is the greatest rock composition ever written however, and contains the greatest guitar solo in VI. Soliloquy in all of Rock. period. The cool thing about a real musician hearing the greatest rock compositions of all time for the first time is you can practically see their synapse lighting up and their brain expand. Fitting for Hemispheres. You know often people can not appreciate or even comprehend the complexity of the bass part on Circumstances and singing at the same time. It is the hardest song I've ever performed as a bass player and singer.

Every song on Hemispheres has at least one section of the song that is bliss, the little harmonic part in prelude, the synthy bridge in circumstances, the trees bass groove/guitar solo, and Alex's solo on la villa is nuts, one of my favorite solos of all time. Xanadu is my favorite Rush song, but the best album goes to Hemispheres, which is head and shoulders above all other Rush albums for its consistency throughout. @@paulhaden8362 The lyrics of "Anagram (for Mongo)" are fantastic! Some might've missed the idea of those lyrics but It helps when you see them in front of you... Rush often encouraged us to think and Neil Peart wrote most of their lyrics of course. In that song he literally taught us about finding anagrams. :-) Words are important and when you really think about them you might come to this conclusion: One sentence here and there doesn't at first have sense... just a part of it. When you hear and read more you start to realize that sentences do have sense. Take care and I hope you're having a great day.

In The Trees, Neil is using what are called temple blocks, they’re a set of five or six hollowed out blocks of different pitch. Neil had a number of various acoustic percussion instruments used in classical orchestras. Tubular bells (aka chimes) orchestra bells (glockenspiel), 4 or 5 cow bells of different pitch, triangles, and the aforementioned temple blocks, there may have been others as well. This is probably my favorite Rush album because of the creativity and imagination put into it! Glad you enjoyed it.😎

It's literally about the Greek Gods . A man from earth traveled to the heavans on his rocket ship the Rocinante' , which is a nod to Isaac Asimov I believe it was who wrote the book "journey of the rosinante" I read it years ago I may not be totally accurate on the name and author if it wasn't Isaac Asimov then it was some other prominent sci-fi author, but I digress, I could go on all day about Rush, anyway back to the story because Apollo and Dionysus "the Gods of love and reason, sought alone to rule the fate of man" . and the gods we're so impressed by the Earth man they made him a god , the god of balance. You would spot some of the references from the previous album. The first song has snippets of the last song of farewell to Kings which is I believe all of side two of "AFWTK's". And just so you know except for the first album almost all the lyrics to every song except maybe three and I doubt it's that many , off hand I can only think of one that Geddy Lee wrote the lyrics to on 2112 called "Tears" . Man you're going to have a blast getting to learn all this stuff for the first time. Kind of envious over here. You'll love "Circumstances" .

I don't know if your Hemipsheres travels yielded info that you needed or not but I'll tell you yes you have a Greek mythology story mixed with the story of Cygnus, a traveler from the Album 'A Farewell To Kings' with the first Cygnus story ending with Cygnus flying in space who flies into a black hole. The Hemispheres 2nd story of Cygnus details Love & Reason battling essentially splitting the Sphere into Hemispheres. Then Cygnus appears formless but retaining memory and awareness and the Gods feel bad for him and make him Cygnus the God of Balance to restore order. Deeply intricate music and words. Even the music itself tells its own story. Neil Peart was a treasure that more people should be aware of. He not only drummed but he wrote most of the bands lyrics and mixed philosophical and spiritual tones. Thanks for posting your reaction to an album I have played on repeat for years and years.

Sig-nus X-1. The first black hole discovered. In the constellation named Cygnus the Swan. Fun fact: John Petrucci (Dream Theater) calls the opening chord "The Alex Lifeson Chord." Alex is basically self taught, so I like to say "he doesn't know what's wrong." He's like a music elemental. I love this album (it still has some goldish powdery leaf like substance in the crease. It the classic de-seeding double album format despite being a single record. The grooves are basically worn smooth from so many plays. I remember buying it when it came out. There's a has a sad IRL story along with it. The studio work was so exhausting that they basically said "never again" WRT huge songs. So they narrowed their scope, kind of compressing their prog into smaller packages. I miss the epics... If you do like epic music, one of Rush's main influences is mostly Yes (Geddy), along with Led Zeppelin (Alex). Yes can be said to have helped found, and IMO define/perfect the prog genre. Rush inducted Yes into the RRHoF and Ged got to play on a song. However, influence doesn't mean copy and Rush adds massive uniqueness to mvsik. This album approaches Yes in it's epic form. One of Rush's defining characteristics is Neil Peart (Peert) lyrics. One of Yes' characteristics is indecipherable lyrics.

I figured it out. You ‘missed’ Rush, when you were listening to Boston, Zeppelin Styx, etc. same kind of music SO THAT, you could THIS for all of us, decades after. Thanks for takin one for the team bro. These vids are epic.

You would be amazed how tight the live versions of The Trees and Village Strangiato were performed on Exit Stage Left. In fact not a bad version of all their songs. Jacobs Ladder for one.

I recommend Yes, their music is multi layered as well. You can start with Heart Of The Sunrise, and Starship Trooper.

If you like Come Sail away, please tell me you're listening to Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas. In fact listen to everything Kansas ever did. I am serious. I can tell you will love it. I don't know how familiar you already are. So I might be preaching to the choir. But just start with that one, studio cut. Or if you've heard it way too much then start with the song, what's going on? Or perhaps he knew, which strangely enough is actually about Albert einstein. Great reaction man, I'm glad I found your channel. I think I came here via Rush 2112, because that's my favorite of their albums but this probably be my second favorite. But I like so much of their stuff, don't get me wrong. And to hear that you were plowing your way through Boston at some point damn I might have to go find those. And then if you throw some early Chicago in there like, feeling stronger every day, or the iconic 25 or 6 to 4, well then you may as well come to Kansas! Lol.

That part you recognized was borrowed from an old jazz tune called Powerhouse. It was used in several Warner Bros cartoons (I call it the Bugs Bunny Factory Theme 🤣)

Love seeing someone who first here's Rush. 2112 is epic. You should go back to the first album and listen to them chronologically so you can grow with them through the years and their progression as musicians and story tellers. Then you'll appreciate the music and the journey. I believe your about to go down the rabbit hole. Pleasant dreams.

Hemispheres was their most complex album and it took them almost a year to produce. It was so daunting that they decided not to push the limits that far again and just stick to their "regular" masterpieces. 😊

I know you're planning to explore 2112, but you should also go back to their earlier albums, including A Farewell to Kings and Fly By Night before jumping ahead to Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.

I've been in a Rush Tribute band(Animation) doing Geddy's part for 25 years. This was my favorite album to play live. We have a KZfaq video out there of us doing this entire album. It's not perfect, but it sure was fun to play. BTW, the low keyboards are the Moog Taurus pedals. I have one from 1978, and have had to rebuild them from time to time. Labor of love. This tour was what killed Geddy's voice, along with In Ear Monitors not having been invented yet. Take the time to listen to all of it. P.S. Check out Dream Theater, you wont be disappointed!

Rush are incredible storytellers. Make sure you check out 2112, Xanadu, By-Tor & the Snow Dog, Natural Science, Red Barchetta & so many more. There's a video of 2112 with accompanying animation that someone put together that you should react to. Also, the cartoon riff in La Villa is called the Powerhouse from the Looney Tunes cartoons. It was instantly recognizable to me when I first this.

This was, without a doubt, Rush's seminal album. By far their most aggressive musically, possibly lyrically as well. Interesting how they themselves (to the best of my knowledge) looked down on it, which I thought was very strange. To be able to play this on bass was and still is my life's pursuit! (I'm not good enough, but wishful thinking.. lol).

As I understood it, they did not look down on this album or their creation. What they did “regret” was how much work they had set up for themselves in writing, arranging, performing and producing it and vowed to not approach an album the same way again. Because Cygnus X-1 had locked them in to a sequel, they struggled in particular in making it musically unique and still fit with what went before. So, except for The Camera Eye on Moving Pictures, they didn’t do any more long-form traditional proggy stuff until Clockwork Angels. One could make the argument that their multi-part Fear was an exception, but it was broken into so many sections and spread across as many albums it’s difficult to engage it as one composition in any way but it’s lyric thread. In fact, I’ve never heard of anyone listening to them as one continuous track. That might be interesting. Rush has been and will continue to be a constant challenge.

I would definitely suggest Cygnus X1 Book 1. Just because you are missing Cygnus getting sucked into the black hole. Lol. In my opinion, the album before this one A Farewell to Kings through Moving Pictures are almost, if not, all perfect albums. And it isn't like the albums after weren't great also, but there is one or two songs on the following albums that aren't my personal favorite. Still great. But these four albums...AF2K, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures. Masterpieces.

Another storytelling Prog masterpiece would be the whole Fragile album by Yes. But do more Rush. After the epics, they mastered the short form too. They have 19 studio albums and they constantly evolved (as you saw in Subdivisions which was a mere 4 years after Hemispheres). This is their 6th studio album in 4 years. They were about 25/26 when this came out. They also used to play > 150 nights a year at this point too.

That Geddy would play those wild, dancing bass lines while simultaneusly singing on the verse of Circumstances is beyond me. But my favorite part on the album is perhaps 6:23 on this video, that bass is singing.
