See how Nick (🇩🇪) and Lex (🇺🇸/🇲🇽) listen to this much requested track by this epic trio band. Every song digs us deeper into the rabbit hole and WE LOVE IT! Thank you Rush Army!
FYI: During this video Nick was recovering from an eye infection, so pardon the oddly red/irritated left eye. :P
Thank you for joining us! Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments and don't forget to like and subscribe. We're open to suggestions/requests, so if you have one leave in the comments!

So cool the way both of you look at each other when the music grabs you. It's refreshing to see you two be able to really appreciate the way these songs move you. I had a flashback to my 15-year-old self listening to this song in my room, staring at the spinning record as the needle got closer and closer to the end of the grooves, confirming the epic ending of this song. I wasn't anywhere near smart or mature enough to grasp the message, but that gave my wiser future self something to look forward to.

I'm 62. With all the madness going on in the world, I pray that people will understand the messages the musical artists of the 60s and 70s were sending us. Back then, like now, we the people had to do it ourselves. We had to protest against war and corruption and promote peace and love and brotherhood. No one in the establishment would do it. Now evil forces are trying to divide us in 2021. Maybe it's just me but my heart aches when I hear all these old songs and worry that the message might be lost. If beautiful people, like all of you, can revive the atmosphere of freedom and love of the seventies by reviewing these songs with a new generation then you are heroes to the human race.

Great pick guys!! Not only a fan favorite, this one is actually one of the bands favorite works... Recorded at LeStudio in Canada, the water sounds came from a lake on the property, Neil and Alex splashed the water with their hands.. Another cool thing is the echo on Alex's guitar was literally created by putting a speaker outside and bouncing the sound off of a mountainside, and rerecording it. Nick you were spot on with the transition comment, Natural Science was written in 3 separate movements, 1) Tide Pools, 2) Hyperspace and 3) Permanent Waves. Glad you guys enjoyed it! Keep up the good work!

Lexi, It is interesting how you said the opening sounded like "paddling" on a lake. This is basically how that sound was created organically, Neil and Alex went down to the shore of a small lake at night, set up two microphones and began to move paddles in the water to generate the wave sounds. You are very perceptive! I'm impressed yet again.

They actually wrote this in the studio. They had been working on a different piece called something like "Sir Gawain and the Green Dragon" and decided to scrap it. That left them about 10 minute short of an album, so they banged this out. So not only were they creative, they were creative on demand (and under pressure). Natural Science is one of my top three Rush songs (along with La Villa and Camera Eye).

I've been a fan of Rush since the 70's ( fly by night) and I absolutely adore their early stuff - Hemispheres being my all time favourite but has a band ever produced three such astounding superb albums than Permanent Waves , Moving Pictures and Signals. There is no other group like Rush. They play music no one else has or ever will and are absolutely peerless. A class apart.

@@NicknLex that’s a great list! Especially since you want to do studio 1st. They left a couple off that will be good studio versions....“Nobody’s Hero” and “The Pass”. With the exception of “YYZ” (you should do “YYZ- Live in Rio” and “The Garden - Clockwork Angels” tour and “Xanadu - Exit Stage Left”) all those tracks are better live... I promise, I wouldn’t steer you wrong! The rest are all good studio tracks, but I recommend you have lyrics available.... with Neil, the lyrics are an intricate part of the song! As far as this song goes, it was recorded at LeStudio in Canada and you hit it on the head with the “paddles” that’s how they made the water sound at the beginning was water running off row boat paddles. This does refer to tide pools and how we get lost in our own little “worlds” and don’t see the big picture! This came out in 1980 and to sum up: This song is about how people can forget about nature because of technology, and how we must value the Earth, technology and our impact on it! Pretty good since this was recorded before the internet was even around! There are some odd 7/8, 6/8 and 3/4 time signatures in this song along with the normal 4/4. (Per song facts) Even 25 yrs later, Alex says this is one of his favorites to play live!! Glad you enjoyed!! I sure did!! Be Well and God Bless... from Texas!

I am old enough to have seen Rush live in concert in 1974. That was the year they were just beginning their first tour of the U.S. I was blown away to see that all of that music was coming from three elite master level musicians. I have been a Rushaholic ever since. Give me the music of that era any day over this digitally massaged and produced music today. I have seen several young reactors say they wished they grew up in the 70’s because of the song writing and musicianship of that era.

The Holy Trinity is amazing. The beginning of this song is comparing us to the "tiny little creatures chasing out their destiny" that live in the tide pools. Just like us we get caught up in our small worlds and forget about the vast ocean that's out there. Don't trip on the lyrics.....yet😁 I know I would listen to a new Rush song organically the first few times and then delve into the lyrics. I would recommend pulling up the lyrics just for you guys just because you eventually "get" where they are going with all the time changes. Dig your reaction, because it reminds me of the first time I listened to a Rush song😳🤯 Take care ✌

I think the cycles of the tide pool are a metaphor for life itself. “Wave after wave will flow with the tide, and bury the world as it does. Tide after tide will flow and recede leaving life to go on as it was.” I think Neil’s talking about planetary history, human and otherwise. Then there’s the stuff about the balance between science and nature and art too. So much to think about! 😍

Just an FYI Alex does not tap, he once stated in an interview "he does not tap and has no interest in it", he does more pull offs to achieve that effect, if you do check out a live version R30 has a great rendering of the song, great reaction.
@chrismarkle2740
@chrismarkle2740 3 жыл бұрын
This is incorrect. While it's true he barely ever uses his right hand on the fretboard, what Alex is doing in the 1st solo in this song could technically be called tapping or just a hammer on and off with the right hand. Either or. If you check out the live performances of the song, you'll find that he has changed the solo to sometimes exclude the tapping and then sometimes include it. You'll find another example of it in the last solo in Hemispheres Book II.
