Yeah, I feel compelled to chime in here in support of ol' Charlie. He might not be the technician player Peart is, but he is, in my opinion, glorious on the drums, the way he hangs back on the beat and lifts the Stones tunes. He's subtle. It's unfair to compare these two players, really. It would be like comparing Bill Bruford to Ringo Starr. Bruford is a drumming god, but the Beatles would have been a lesser band with that kind of a drummer in their fold.

@Brian Shaffner for all of the albums that Rush has released, they have only sold 40 million albums worldwide. Rush is very much a niche band. They play overly complex music with themes most people don't care about. They don't have a front man, and Lee's voice is not universally liked, and most women don't like them.

@@joedimaggio3687 The guys in Rush, especially Neil, are all quite intelligent people - and their audience, from my experience, are a couple of steps above average Joe as well. Sadly there are not too many intelligent people wandering the face of the earth. Rush, at their best, is fine dining for the few, while The Stones is burger and fries for the masses.

A lot of people don’t realize that Neil dug a lot of 60’s bands from all styles (read his books). Neil wasn’t a technical drum snob and he appreciated all eras of rock music. He loved Dennis Wilson as a drummer and rock star....Neil was a fan of music, not technique..or at least music came first above technical prowess and thus Neil appreciates Charlie (again, read his books...”Traveling Music” in particular).

It goes by talent, style, tech nique, and inpiration. I look "up" to many Musicians who could be younger, less experienced, etc. because they INSPIRE me. We all feed off of each other! There was one time, however, when Mr. Watts famously chafed at being treated like a hired hand rather than an equal member of the group. In 1984, Mr. Jagger and Mr. Richards went out for a night of drinking in Amsterdam. When they returned to their hotel around 5 a.m., Mr. Jagger called Mr. Watts, waking him up, and asked, “Where’s my drummer?” Twenty minutes later, Mr. Watts showed up at Mr. Jagger’s room, coldly furious, but shaved and elegantly dressed in a Savile Row suit and tie. “Never call me your drummer again,” he told Mr. Jagger, before grabbing him by the lapel and delivering a right hook. Mr. Richards said he narrowly saved Mr. Jagger from falling out a window into an Amsterdam canal.

These 2 were like Van Gogh and Picasso. Both are masters and both are one-off’s that can be mimicked but never duplicated. I cannot imagine either band without these drummers at the helm. Try to imagine Honky Tonk Women, Can’t you hear me Knocking or Rip this Joint being played by Ginger Baker. Baker is an amazing drummer but the groove necessary to bring these Stones’ classics to life was the magic of Charlie Watts. Same for any Rush classic. Ringo is another example of the right drummer in the right band. There is magic when certain musicians find each other-it is alchemy and cannot be explained by mere mortals

Geddy elaborated on that story recently. They were getting ready to go on stage, Neil was completely in the zone of performance prep, so focused on the pending task at hand, and Charlie is there trying to say a quick hello, but Neil was oblivious to him. Geddy kept pointing over, trying to get Neil's attention, sort of whisper/mouthing "Its Charlie Watts! Its Charlie Watts!" until he got Neil's attention. That's when the handshake and hello happened.

Since you're the one making the argument, how about YOU tell me just one aspect in which Neil is better than ChaRLIE (not Charly) in terms of basic drumming. Drum solos and BS like that is just for flash. Drumming at it's core is what is in question here and it doesn't get better than Charlie Watts. Neil is just as good there's no question in that. He's not better than Charlie, he's equally as good, and for you to say he's much better as a person shows you know absolutely nothing about Charlie. He's the most non-rock star rock star that exists. Which one is better? You are what you record. Watt's body of work doesn't compare. There can be no debate. Don't try. Its embarrassing.

There is no "better." They play what is expected or asked of them for the band they play for. It's just different styles.

LOL 😆, really? Charlie Watts was the drummer of one of the biggest rock bands in history. Watts was playing the drums way before Peart was even born.

Yeah, that'd be like saying John Bonham meets his hero Stewart Copeland. I mean Copeland is a great drummer in his own right, but he's no Bonham.

@TOSYuan3195 I'm speaking generally; of course there are exceptions. Neil's style is mechanical, mathematical, precise. Not necessarily a bad thing--but he lacks groove, feeling, life, in his playing. That's not to say he doesn't ever give an emotive performance, but even when he does, it feels like a machine; like a Swiss timepiece. Cf. with something like Bonzo's "Fool in the Rain" shuffle for instance. Watch him solo: great skill, but no soul. He can play a jazz piece, but he can't play jazz.

Charlie Watts sucks as a drummer?????? He is one of the greatest drummers to ever pick up a set of sticks. Things he does most people cant even recognize. Why don't you just let Geezer Butler describe it. He is the drummer for Black Sabbath in case you didn't know. Look it up on here. I don't know what is dumber, the comment or that I'm actually responding to it.

Charlie Watts looked up to jazz players as his idols -- definitely NOT Neil Peart! hehe. I doubt Charlie Watts has even heard Hemispheres. If he heard it, he would probably just laugh. "What the fuck is this crap? Talking trees?!? brwaaaahaaahahaaa!!!"

Take it easy dude. You would be surprised who listens or who admires who. Iron Maidens drummer Nico M ist a fan of Level 42 and their drummer. Look them up you might be shocked. Why would Charlie Watts go out of his way to meet RUSH?

What's better? Watts wouldn't sound good in Rush and Peart wouldn't sound good in the Stones. They both play what is asked of them. Frankly I think Charlie's drum sound is awesome.
