@TheMiddleman1 ~ Isn't this sort of logic part of the problem? If Pistorius had attacked her with his blades, he would need to be closer to her to harm her, and she could have used objects to fight for her life. I'm fairly certain that Pistorius' prosthetics could not have penetrated the door she hid behind which would have drastically affected the outcome.

It also says "a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state..." but pro-gun advocates always leave that part out. Even if you set aside that it's supposed to be for members of a recognized militia group ONLY, the second amendment itself has the words "WELL REGULATED" in it. Currently, it's not well regulated.

@Fuk KZfaq I'm just going to respond to all your comments here. First off if it's guns that are used to kill over 10,000 people every year in just the US, then it's a gun issue. Yes it's true that in the UK I'm never going toe to toe with a bear, maybe a rabid squirrel, but definitely not a bear. So yeah you may need protection from wildlife I'll give you that, but you don't need snipers, grenade launchers, or machine guns to protect yourself from the wildlife. Lastly I feel safe because I don't ever have to fear being attacked by a gun, if you need a gun just to make yourself feel safe in your own home and community, that means there is a serious issue. You need stricter gun laws, less machine guns, less at 15s, make it tougher to actually buy a gun (don't sell at Walmart) I swear you people have no clue

@@danieljob3184 Um.. Martin Bryant, April 28 1996, killed 35 people with a gun. That sounds like a violent gun massacre to me. Think it's just a freak case? How about this wikipedia page of mass killings in Australia: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_massacres_in_Australia Notice how many of them are "Spree shootings" between 1984 and 1996? And overall gun homicides are on a downward trend as well: www.rand.org/research/gun-policy/analysis/essays/1996-national-firearms-agreement.html And I had a look into the regulation of gel blasters you mentioned, and it appears that there was a ban on them due to them appearing very similar to regular guns, and that if fired at an individual that is not wearing protective gear they can still be injured, which is why even in the more lenient states like Queensland, they remain illegal to point and fire at an individual without their permission. The reasoning for the restriction on gel blasters is that if a police officer were to see an object that appeared similar to a real, dangerous weapon, they might overreact and potentially cause the death of an innocent individual. And did you know that assault and battery are also crimes? Injuring another individual with an airsoft or gel blaster could still induce criminal charges, and you can STILL get them if you have a license. Both "gel blasters" as you refer to them and airsoft guns, especially fully automatic ones like the ones that have been banned, can do genuine harm to another individual, and are not toys. You still should not be aiming or firing them at other individuals without consent, due to the risk of injury inherent to pieces of equipment like these. Notice how NERF guns aren't banned? Or any other kind of foam firing weapon? Almost like the danger is the problem..

@@ethelberht985 Yeah, stabbings are a problem. The primary difference is that if someone brings a knife into school and starts stabbing/slashing people, ANYONE has a chance to stop them - the knife is a dangerous advantage in a confrontation yes, but it has a very limited range and it's effectiveness is largely limited by your skill at using it. Stuff like picking up a chair and using the seat as a shield while you use the legs to maintain distance is actually an effective countermeasure. A gun's range is more likely to reach it's limit at where your line of sight stops than anything else in a school (and if you fire it randomly at a wall, can still kill someone who happens to be stood behind it without you even seeing them) and the only skill it requires in this kind of situation is the ability to point it vaguely in the direction of someone and pull the trigger repeatedly/in the case of an automatic just hold it down. Much as I hate to admit it, the most effective counter to someone with a gun who is trying to hurt people is someone with a gun trying to protect them (this does NOT, in any way, shape or form, mean that I think the solution is to give more people/everyone guns - the solution is to make it extremely difficult for someone trying to hurt people to get hold of one). As for OP - the advice your mom gave you is great. I'm not a psychological expert on this but, from what I understand, once someone is in that kind of headspace they're not especially likely to differentiate between the people who were nice to them and those who weren't (even though they are likely to have people they explicitly want to hurt). Still, it certainly doesn't *hurt* your chances of not getting shot and, more importantly, a ray of hope and compassion in their life (because, when you're that isolated and miserable, basic kindness in the school corridor can be a HUGE boost) makes them less likely to end up shooting anyone.
@aecides3203
@aecides3203 2 жыл бұрын
@@ethelberht985 My point was that it's extremely difficult to use them in a way that allows you to slaughter dozens upon dozens of people without anyone stopping you, as well as being much harder to actually fatally injure someone with a knife than it is with a gun. I actually wouldn't agree that knives (or acid) are a 'major issue' for us - yes, they're used. Yes they're a common weapon choice for people looking to hurt others. But if you compare our rates of stabbings to the rates of shootings in countries which either have legal, easily accessible firearms or very little ability to enforce their laws against them, they're really not high enough that we need to be panicking - arseholes will always exist, will always find ways to make it easier for them to hurt others and the media will always make as big a drama as humanly possible out of it. Unless it's a school being shot up in the US, in which case the Media will downplay it as much as possible, bring on NRA advocates to explain why more guns are the solution and occasionally try to ban video games because the kid played Call of Duty or something similar (because obviously it's not the *gun's* fault, it's their game consoles).

@@auberginemanproductions1608 It's surprising how few actually die in that situation as people run away. Once someone gets over 10 metres away (which if someone is running fast takes a matter of seconds) you would have to aim and most likely miss. Most mass shootings are the gun man moving around killing either trapped or hiding people. That's why mass shootings with shot guns and simple 22lr rifles often have similar numbers to semi auto full bore. Look at the 2010 Cumbria shootings. He killed 12 people with a 22lr in a very very similar way to the Hungerford shootings with an AK/Shot gun.

The UK hasn’t had a mass shooting since the Dunblane massacre in the 90s because our gun laws stop people owning guns unless they are the military, the police, farmers and pest controllers (who are very limited on what they can own). Only a few people own firearms otherwise, mainly .22 small calibre weapons for target shooting. I’m not anti gun as I used to shoot at a range in the 80s but if it’s a choice between my owning a gun or stopping a repeat of Dunblane with our strict gun laws I have to accept I can’t own a gun. Most Brits also support our gun laws which is what counts in a democracy, not the desire of a few to own a gun.

@@Prince__Teclis yep besides the paperwork you have to fill in you have to be assessed and have security at home, a good secure gun cabinet/safe etc there is a lot involved. If you don’t know about Dunblane or Hungerford there are documentaries on KZfaq and articles. Some people could be trusted with owning a gun but a lot of people I wouldn’t trust with owning one in a million years as they lack common sense or they may have medical issues such as PTSD. If you look at the US a lot of ex servicemen commit suicide with their guns sadly in the UK although suicide is an issue for ex servicemen the fact that they don’t have an easy option like a gun does help reduce the options to commit suicide. We don’t help ex service personnel anywhere near enough in either country sadly

@@JM-jc4up But it happened a little over 14 years apart. Dunblane Massacre in 1996, Cumbria shootings in 2010. There is no perfect system, the cumbria shootings prove that, someone will eventually slip through the cracks. But i think that if there is a gap of 14 years between a shooting incident then that is better than daily gun crime you see in the US. I'm not going to claim the UK if perfect because it certainly isn't but I think its the fact that from an outsider perspective it looks as if nothing is being done by congress or the government to tackle the gun related issues America faces. Maybe I'm wrong but that just my thoughts on the topic.

@LynxSouth
@LynxSouth 3 жыл бұрын
Before the Constitution was approved by the various states, it turned out there were several issues that people around the new country were adamant that it should include before they would allow their state legislatures to accept it. Instead of rewriting the whole thing, ten clauses covering those issues were placed at the end. They're more like explicit assurances than amendments in that they don't change or reverse something in the original text. Anyhow, they're called the Bill of Rights, and because they have been part of the Constitution from the beginning of its adoption, they're considered basically sacrosanct. For most Americans, changing the Bill of Rights would mean a severe loss as well as a direct contravention of the will of not only the Founding Fathers, but of the founding citizens. There have been other amendments since, but they are not held in the same high regard as these first ten. Edit: Sorry, the amendments became law a couple years after the main Constitution. State legislatures sent their objections, reservations, and lists of suggested amendments along with their ratification documents. Most ratified only with the understanding that guarantees of individual liberties would be included ASAP.

And let's not pretend guns are the only problem in the US or Australia, both have the same problem with religious extremism, although they will never call it that because "Christians". There is a reason secular countries around the world are doing so well, they did away with barbaric habits, where as the US for example put their barbaric behaviour into law.

Yes there are shootings, but look at the figures 37 Dead over 20 years. Imagine if those shooters had access to semi auto firearms? We dont have gun shows and getting a AR15/AK47/M15/ MINI14. legally is impossible as anything with a pistol grip/changeable magazine is banned.Also selective fire weapons are a big no no. And then theres the license, backround check , police check, you have to belong to a gun club, and complete a gun course. Then you have to satisfy the authority why you need a gun.(hint protection and self defence are not good reasons!) And then you need to register the gun and the police will check your gun safe to make sure it complies.thats the legal way, criminals who have guns generally only use them on other criminals . To count as mass shootings is deemed to be a shooting where 5 or more are deceased due to gun violence.
