Russell Morris is a dead set legend. This song was revolutionary for many reasons. Mainly its length. Radio stations didn't want to play it because it was too long. He had many hits in the 70's. "on the wings of an eagle".. "sweet sweet love" etc.... He was still performing recently and has a great series of blues albums over the last couple of decades.

My girlfriend and husband saw Russell Morris last week in concert called, Rock The House in Melbourne Australia with other older Aussie singers, John Paul Young, Ross Wilson, Glenn Shorrock, Brian Cadd, Russell Morris and Ella Hooper perform all of their old hits. My friends said all their voices were still amazing.

This is a reinterpretation 20 years later! The clip you should watch is titled ‘RUSSELL MORRIS The Real Thing - Complete and in stereo’. It was visual ‘extravaganza’ (clearly disapproved of by the host) that may look dated now but it is consistent with the era, and more appropriate to the mood of the piece. Given the available technical effects they actually do a good job of matching the visuals with the over the top audio, which was such a shock at the time that radio stations would fade the track out when the choirs came in, so as to avoid that final outrageous and unacceptable sound of an atomic bomb!

You're not getting The Real Thing... Gonna express some thoughts as an Aussie. This is a classic psychedelic rock song that even the most ardent of psychedelic rock fans and collectors of psychedelic rock tend to overlook or just completely miss. I begin to wonder why this song remains unknown outside Australia... Then I see that it's the 1990 weird-sh!tty remix/re-recording that gets the most views and pops up in the search results, and it's plain to see why most people ignore it. Some Australian music industry genius thought it'd a good idea to release a silly re-recording of a classic and unfortunately, that's the one that rises to the top of the search results, because somebody who DIDN'T have the original version decided to upload it before anybody else did. The original 1969 version is the one to look at. Not this crappy version... If this version was my introduction to The Real Thing, I would click it off and forget all about it. It's like being recommended Doobie Brothers' ''Long Train Running'' and then watching the video of the 1990's Dance-Remix version of said song. If you recommended somebody your favourite American beer and the barman decides to dilute it with water before that person even gets to taste the beer, you'd probably feel the same way I feel as I watch you two react to this shambolic recording of a classic song. It's not your fault. You're just not getting the real thing.

Russell performed for my Sister-In-Laws birthday in their backyard about 16 years ago , he was just awesome and one of the few singers who performed live just as good if not better than his recordings , a really nice bloke too ....

Hmm... I wish you guys listened to the original 1969 version, which was uploaded by nzoz1969 or Brett Reece. This was the washdown 1990 re-recording with a video that has a montage of Australian newsreaders of the day *cringe* It's irritating that KZfaq push the crappiest version at the very top

I am annoyed that this version is the one that pops up as the first in the search results. I remember seeing this version premiered on TV and thinking it was complete trash. Sadly, it's trash that didn't disappear in time, but instead eclipses the original version.

I agree. The original clip from the 60s is far more powerful and disturbing and the weird vocal add ins do this masterpiece a disservice. And then the speeches over the top of that magical ending really killed that amazing ending.

This is a modern video for the original song so there's additional sound bites not in the original The Aussie reporter speaking to camera in the red top is Jana Wendt and she was only on tv in the 80s

The 1969 video is black & white and far less graphic. It commences with Brian Henderson, the host of "Bandstand" introducing Russell and the song. Brian went on to read the evening news to half the country (immaculately) for about 40 years. Russell released some beautiful songs and still performs live concerts.

One of the reviewers, I think the long haired one, mentioned Garage Rock briefly, and he's right, because between 1965 approx.- 1970ish, there was a massive underground Garage Scene in many major cities around the world. Glad to say that Russell Morris is going very strong these days. He is an excellent Guitarist and brilliant song writer. Australian fans, like myself, will be aware of the Super Groups he has played in as well. Russell has had a few very successful albums in the last 10-15 yrs and he's won awards. He is an Australian Treasure.

I liked the original better than this version. I was 7 when the original was played on the radio in 1969 Australia. Whenever I hear this song it reminds me of the time of the Apollo missions, man on the moon, Vietnam War, and the Cold War. A generally bad time psychologically for children to grow up in.

Yes it is hard to watch, but being reminded of what people have done to each other, helps us to realise what some are capable of doing, if they can minimalise the effects in the collective consciousness. We have to know about atrocities, to not let them fool us, that their ideas are not going to be so bad.
