Staggering fact - Malcolm Young plays the solo in part 1

Ah yes. The primal soup in which AC/DC was born. This is Aussie Rock royalty. Vanda and Young were an amazing songwriting team and music visionaries. Their band The Easybeats has some fantastic tunes that you should listen to (very much like an Aussie version of The Kinks, with raw guitars and wild riffs and catchy vocals), with Friday On My Mind, She’s So Fine, I’ll Make You Happy, Sorry, Women (Make You Feel Alright), and my personal favourite St Louis as a great set of short but punchy 60s rock tracks, all with Stevie Wright on lead vocals. As has no doubt been mentioned here, George Young is the older brother of Malcolm and Angus Young, and the three Scottish immigrants along with Harry Vanda (Johannes van den Berg) and Alberts Studios helped define an Aussie rock sound that was unlike any other region in the world. From that studio was born The Easybeats, The Angels (Angel City in the USA, Rose Tattoo and through osmosis a whole slew of Aussie pub rock icons like Divinyls, Cold Chisel and more. To get a real picture of that time, check out a fantastic documentary called Blood+Thunder - The Sound Of Alberts. You can find both parts 1 & 2 on KZfaq. On a separate note, for a great track that I think would blow you away, have a listen to the studio version of Lopsy Lu by Stanley Clarke. He’s a phenomenon on bass and this groove from his self-titled debut album is a superb showcase of his talents alongside the awesome Tony Williams on drums, Jan Hammer (great name) on keyboards, and Bill Connors on guitar. All three are nicely tucked into different spots in the stereo mix so you can hear who is playing what. You won’t be disappointed. (Note also that Stanley’s bass part is played as is - where you hear multiple notes being played he’s doing that in one take.

This mid-70's song has long been satirized here in Australia. But its also admired for its ambitiousness. Stevie Wright was a larger than life figure who lived a life of Rock and Roll excess. Cheers.

As someone who is 59 and Australian, this song has been part of my life for 50 years. It's no surprise to me that only 2 people suggested it. Not saying there's none, but only a small percentage of people outside of Australia would have heard of this. Not many Australian artists who were successful here had the same level of success overseas. Great reaction! May I suggest an Australian band I grew up with and loved in the 70's, Skyhooks. Start with "Living In The 70's " or "Horror Movie".

I was introduced to Evie by our local rock station, CHOM FM, in Montreal (Canada), at the beginning of the 80s. To this day, it's one of my favorite songs.

This song was pretty big in my neck of the woods (Montreal, Canada) back in the mid-to-late 70s. The middle third is quite sappy, but the first and third sections kick some ass. The chorus of the last bit has a definite Motown feel ... like Four Tops or Temptations. I dig it!

I always enjoy seeing non-Australians finally discover the 'classics'. Without Stevie Wright/The Easybeats and Vanda/Young, there'd be no Australian rock music scene. Or at least it'd be a heck of a lot different.

I recall my friend who was roadying for the support band Cheques in the Mail at our local pub in Seven Hills opened the band room door to pick up some guitars and nearly knocked Stevie's needle nearly too far into his arm.... he staggered around and mumbled something and almost collapsed into a chair close by. This was one of many of Stevie Wright''s comeback tours in the late 80's out here in Australia.... he got a real bum deal from the music industry and some pioneering psych treatment facilities courtesy of the establishment in the early 70's.... very sad story actually.

Big big thanks JP for this reaction!!! The song is awesome, from beginning to end. It is still, unfortunately, a hidden gem. Thanks again JP!! One thing I noticed in part 3 is how the song's character is slowly slipping into insanity... The guitar solo is chaotic, rough and gritty, Wright's voice is cracking, moving from singing to crying and shouting and the final piano part, going into chaotic creshendo, as if the character is going over the board.

Evie part 1 was also covered be Suzie Quatro. Stevie Wright was the lead singer of Australia’s first international rock band. The Easybeats. The 2 guitarist Harry Vanda and George Young wrote all the Easybeats songs as well as Evie and Blackeyed Bruiser and Guitar Band for Stevie. All 3 are really great songs. Vanda and Young were Australia's biggest songwriters and producers producing Bands like The Angels, Rose Tatoo, Ted Mulry Gang, and many more, including George's little brother's band AC/DC first 6 Albums George also played Bass for a short time for AC/DC. Vanda and Young are also mentioned in Dire Straits song Sultanas of Swing they're the guitar George and Harry with the daytime job.

Yeah. Great selection. a true Aussie classic. And you got the tragedy of the story. Well done man. Oh, and Malcom Young from AC/DC plays rhythm guitar on it. Not surprising as his brother George co wrote & co produced it.

I know Part 1 from somewhere, but don't know where, so have had to go do some "detecting". It's Australian, so that's the possible reason I know it, just by itself. But then why don't I know Part 2 or Part Disco? And slowly it becomes almost as if I remember, now. A friend of mine brought a compilation album from Canada, and the compiler of the compilation felt that only Part 1 was compatible. Compatibility counts on a compilation album. (Might also be that he didn't like Parts 2 and 3.) I think there was some Rush on that compilation, but I can't recall what Rush, so maybe I'm not remembering at all? Anyway that's getting boring, so nevermind. It's a Vanda & Young song. There's a certain kind of listener whose ears prick up upon seeing "Vanda & Young". Because the Young in question is the big brother of Angus and Malcolm (and shame on you if you don't know what that means - OK, poor you, rather, no shame). They'll sue you right down to the cat's bedding if you do a reaction to it, but this is what Vanda & Young gives expectations of: *Whole Lotta Rosie* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eLJla65emL6re6c.html (or things like that) or even of Doc Neeson's brilliant *The Angels* (Angel City in the USA, because of some kind name clash, or unintended meaning of the name). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9GqgdV6zJ26l2Q.html "This is it folks! Very derivative. Maybe it was because some of your recent listening, but I heard bits of Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson and The Temptations (I'm not a huge Motown fan but that was very reminiscent of Get Ready) All the Australian stuff I've heard recently has done nothing to dispel the stereotype of 'copyists because the real thing never toured Australia'. I know that's very unfair so point me to some authentically Australian rock. (Anyone who says Uluru gets a thumbs down) (AC/DC don't count as they're largely Scottish and have the birth certificates to prove it) 😁

One song, 3 parts, and an odd mix 🤔 Parts 1 & 2 ok, standard-ish R&R, R&B/soul. Part 2, pheeooww, schmaltz aplenty. See what they going for. Brave even, BITD, but all together... not my cup of tea.
