You are under the assumption that the US wants Ukraine to have a clear cut victory… this bloody quagmire is to their benefit. I heard the first batch of pilots which had experience with Soviet jets did poorly when under pressure and resorted back to old habits. This caused a delay in overall program success. Untrained new pilots are undergoing full fledge western flight school at minimum 18+ months and 300hrs of flight before being set in a squad. It is well known that fresh untrained pilots do better overall than pilots with thousands of hours when its a completely different platform. Now all this would make sense as to why it has taken longer than what was said at the beginning. As stated, two or more pilots per air craft because sorties should be running 24/7

Any combat aircraft will spend more time undergoing maintenance than flying mission sorties. If anything, you want more aircraft than pilots because up to one third of them will be out of action at any given time. Some will be destroyed on the ground, others will encounter problems and be scavenged. It's the pilots that matter, not the airframes. There are thousands of those, and the US needs to step up.

The issue is training openings are limited. There are other countries who had scheduled their training before Ukraine. The US might open up more training sights rather than just in Arizona. They also must learn English as the manuals and maintenance crew need to be able to understand English. Also, it normally requires 18 months of training on the F-16's which are very expensive complex jets. They require a smoother runway too. They must be hidden underground, preferably, away from bombers. All if this takes time.

I suspect that the shortage of trained F-16 pilots could be addressed in a manner similar to the The Flying Tigers, once Ukraine starts flying missions. By restricting them to missions inside of the Ukrainian controlled territories, their dubious status as combatants wouldn't really come up. Of course, in the transparent situation in Ukraine, combined with large scale intelligence operations by Moscow, Russia would know what was happening. But just like the USA didn't openly acknowledge Russia pilots fighting in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Russia wouldn't actually do anything about it.

@@dax354able I don't think CAS has a place in a war like this, at least until there is undeniable air superiority. Even the russians who have enjoyed what I'll call an "air advantage" so far, now only do CAS sorties where they can launch glide bombs and cruise missiles from within russian borders. Why spend thousands of dollars running and risking an F16 for a CAS sortie when a drone can do the same thing for pennies on the dollar. There's a reason we haven't seen any su25 footage for a while now. The real strength of the F16 in Ukraine will come from its long-range stand-off munitions in SEAD (AGM-88 HARM) and removing the air advantage that Russia currently holds in the conflict.

This explains why, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of Ukrainians went to Russia to work, and after the start of the war, it was Russia that accepted the largest number of Ukrainian refugees. Despite the most severe sanctions in world history, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has more than doubled its forecast for Russian GDP growth in 2024, from 1% to 2.5%. And according to the World Bank, the Russian economy in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) has become the fourth in the world. According to this indicator, Russia took fourth position with a share of 3.8% of world GDP, ahead of all European countries, including Germany ($5.2 trillion, its share is 3.4% of world GDP) and France ($3.6 trillion, 2.4%), as well as Japan ($5.6 trillion, 3.7%). Ukraine, on the contrary, even with the support of the entire “civilized West” continues to remain the poorest and most underdeveloped country in Europe. No matter how much economic aid you send to thieving Ukrainian officials, it will still not be enough! their diplomats will continue to insult your countries through inaction. It’s time to recognize that Ukraine and corruption are synonymous words.

What are the pros and cons of Ukraine taking Crimea in summer or winter? Would Ukraine simply block supplies to Crimea for a season or two? The answer is not that simple. A) it is expensive to maintain a nuclear arsenal and Ukraine did not have the funds to do so. B) the launch codes were in moscow so they would need a new launch vehicle to do so. Also a creation of such a system would be quite expensive. Looking at it from todays perspective that would have been a worthy investment, but at that point no one thought a war with russia was aproaching.
