The Fugasnaya Aviatsionnaya Bomba (FAB) series of idiot bombs, manufactured in Russia, is virtually obsolete. Thought to have lost its appeal in the age of smart bombs, Russia successfully modified the FAB bomb during the conflict in Ukraine by adding a folding wing module and a guidance system, earning the bomb the moniker "smart bomb."
Rumor has it that Russia is developing a larger version of the FAB bomb that integrates the UMPK (Unifitsirovannyi Modul Planirovaniya Korrektsii) module, which combines launch and correction capabilities, in response to the increasing complexity of conflict dynamics. In the event that the FAB-250 (250 kg) and FAB-500 (500 kg) bombs have been dropped from the Su-34 Fullback fighter bomber thus far, Russia is expected to use the FAB-3000, a heavier FAB bomb type with greater destructive capability.
The FAB-3000 bomb, like the FAB-250, FAB-500, and FAB-1500, is no longer "new." The Soviet Union started developing the FAB-3000 as early as 1946. Due to its size, the FAB-3000 can only be launched by the Tu-22M3 Backfire strategic bomber, unlike the FAB-500 and FAB-1500. Furthermore, only two of these bombs may be carried by a single Tu-22M3 unit on a single mission.
The bomb is three tons in weight and more than three meters long. Its explosive yield is equivalent to 1.4 tons of trinitrotoluene (TNT). A triple-fuse mechanism is used in this massive weapon to boost reliability. The devastating blast radius of the FAB-3000 can cause collateral damage up to 900 meters in all directions.
The FAB-3000, like the FAB-250 and FAB-500, will be equipped with a GPS receiver, a top-level control system, and a set of wings that make up the UMPK module. The usage of conventional bombs is revolutionized by this combination. The longer launch distance from the wing, which ensures the safety of the aircraft and its crew, is one important benefit.
But it goes beyond simply covering greater distances. For extreme precision during attacks, the UMPK is equipped with a guiding system that is linked to a GPS receiver. This technology controls GPS tracking data in real time to alter the bomb's glide route as needed.
In the modern combat, precision is essential. A "dumb bomb" can become a "smart bomb" by installing a UMPK module. With UMPK, bombs don't just fall; instead, they glide in the direction of their target while adapting to the wind and shifting targets.
