Merci Grand- père

it's a great thing you had the opportunity to meet your grandfather. i couldn't have that chance. my paternal grandfather died at 43 when my father was 21 and in the university; my maternal grandfather died at 65 two years before i was born (both from heart failure). my maternal grandmother lived to be 93 years old. she died five years ago. my paternal grandmother i rarely see her. i live in mexico, near arizona. she lives in tucson near my aunt. she migrated to the US in the early 80's.

thank you for sharing your story. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't have a chance to meet your grandfathers. Do you have any pictures of them? I think it's also important to record our grandsparents' voices and stories. people don't talk like that anymore. I hope you can Skype your grandmother and ask her about their childhood etc 😊

I nice video Dasha. Your grandmother has a very nice apartment - with a beautiful view from the windows in winter. Because you didn't narrate it too quickly, I was able to understand most of your commentary without translation - thank you. When I was a child, and visted my grandparents, you always knew they'd be no shortage of delicious food made by my grandmother - so not so different to the same experience in Russia. My mum was also a nurse (like your grandmother) and for part of her nursing career was as a midwife, because of this, my mother has helped with the delivery of all my sisters' children, at each of the hospitals where they were born. So my mother helped deliver 3 of her grandchildren in England, and another 2 in Dubai.

My great grandparents were from Germany and Scotland, moved to Alabama late 1880's. My grand parents were born in the mid 1890's. My parents were born when my grandparents were in their mid 30's, then I was born when my parents were in their mid 30's so my parents were much older than your grandparents. I may be the age of your parents, but I remember the early 1960's, no one had much material stuff but it was good times, we grew most of our food and at that time (1960's) the older people lived in "shack houses" maybe with electricity but heated with a cast iron cook stove, these may be like the Dacha. I liked to visit the old people when I was young (8 to 12 years old) I would lay on the floor near the stove in the winter, the heat felt so good. There would be corn bread in the stove and sweet potatoes to eat. I would wear shoes in the winter but rarely in the summer. Some made moonshine but I did not see much of that. One of my grandfathers would write one line in a diary every day, this was early 1900's. There was no money, most people lived by subsistence and would trade with each other and help each other build barns, houses and the Church. The Church was the center of the community and most social behavior in the community was regulated by the Church.

thank you for sharing! that's very interesting. I could feel the smell of corn bread while I was reading your comment. such good memories! my grandfather also had a diary, he'd also write football scores there. do you still have your grandfather's diary?
