Men take off gloves before shaking hands to show respect rather than for cleanliness reasons

Shaking hands with your gloves off has nothing to do with cleanliness in fact. If we both have our gloves on, we would take them off before shaking hands. It's just our tradition and I don't know its roots... But it's not about hygiene for sure)

1 - We do have private houses. Many people even have apartment and a house in suburbs(called DACHA in russian, very unique Russian tradition) 2 - Yes, shaking hands in gloves is considered very rude. 3 - Steel doors are new thing in Russia, 20 years ago nobody had steel doors, all doors were wooden and covered from behind by noise-reducing material. 4 - Shaking hands is very common in Russia. Even when your hands are dirty, you offer your wrist or elbow to shake. And it is very rude not to shake hand, which is offered to you. You can get punched in face if you dont shake hand that is offered to you to shake. 5 - I didnt know that we talk to people standing very close to each other, until I went to the US. First months I were coming too close to people on the streets, when asking them something, they would take like three steps backwards ))) And I am not even Russian by ethnicity, I am Daghestani. And that's is another cool fact about Russia

Shaking hands without gloves is just obvious and polite thing to me. It`s not about cleanliness (never thought in that way) it`s just about manners. I thought, it`s a common and world-wide thing.

DEn Bond Yeah, it's not about being clean. There is a historical connotation to it as philip mentioned, but what's more important: it's a small body contact, a small token of emotional binding between the two people. Maybe it's irrelevant most of the time, but if you do it in a glove it just doesn't make sense at all. Another thing, many men wouldn't offer a handshake to a woman unless she deliberately offers a hand to shake. If she does it though, declining would be impolite, declining a handshake is like saying "you are so below me I can barely stand your presence". Even then women usually don't shake hands (with other women too) and even if they do usually that happens only when they get acquainted with someone, while men do it all the time, every time they meet an acquiantance or say bye to friend.

+DEn Bond Btw, there are certain rules about this gloves shakehand thing. I'll try to explain: -it is ok to shake your hands when 2 guys has no gloves(for example they took their gloves to make a shakehand) - it is ok if BOTH of them wearing gloves and making a handshake - it is NOT ok if 1 guy that hasn't glove on his hand he reaches his hand(to another man) to make a handshake, and the other man DON'T TAKE OFF HIS GLOVE TO MAKE A HANDSHAKE. It is a disrespectful thing.

ethan hunt in soviet union(1980-1990) you could help to build house(with appartment, you spend 1-2 years) and after that you got apparment for free(goverment pay for materials and you are working for youself) or if you have family and you realy need appartment, you could ask goverment and they will give it to you(not immidiatly, but 1-2-3 years and for free).Thats why Soviet Union was the golden age of Russia from the point of simple citizen. If you are working(doesnt matter where, factory, farmer or writer) you always will got some money+tickets on food, sugar, bread, milk, alchol etc and every year you will get 1 month for rest on sea or on mountains .Also was free and good medicine,So if you are working->you dont care about many things.(Many people think that communism is bad.Yes,its bad for greedy and egoistic people ,but good for simple citizens).

i would like to add: it it not common in Russia for a man to shake hands with a woman. But if woman give her hand to shake, it is not necessary for her to remove her glove. But man still has to remove his glove. I don't know origins of this habbit.

It is true about the gloves, though I don`t know the reason of that custom. Some said that it was mean to show that there is no weapon hidden in your hand, "you have nothing to hide". But of course now it is just customary, symbolic. And funny enough - if you dont take off your glove without believable reason - it will be disrespectful. About private space - I would disagree - I can`t talk ot people nose to nose :) . I think that would be considered impolite, in general. The steel doors over the wooden door is rather modern thing and it is a precaution against thieves. Because wooden door is often opened inside - it can be relatively easy broken with a foot punch. On the other hand steel doors (more over - opening outside) are much harder to break with a kick. At least as I understand that.

About gloves. I'm russian but to be honest i dont know the true reason too. I think it's a sign of reaspectance. And about the weapons you are probably true. And the other thing: sometimes it's possible to shake hands in gloves if you say "давай по-зимнему", "let's do it winter slyle". Especially between friends. When it's about -30°C you will not want to take gloves off.
@AlexandrGeffest

Not every apartment have two doors. For thiefs if the steel door is already opened it's not a big problem to open the wooden door too. The wooden door may be used to save more warm inside. And some houses can have another steel door for two or three or more apartments (depends on house's plan).

+Roger Dinhelm (Polyglot) Two doors serve not only a safety reason. You have much better noise and cold protection with two doors. And about gloves, there is a trick which works sometimes with your friends or acquaintances, if it's really cold and you don't won't to take your glove off, you can just bump each others fists in the glove :) But usually, yes, you should take off your glove and shake hands, it's the matter of respect and politeness.

We have private space. It's just very small for big city guys. But it's pretty large for country guys in the same time. It comes from that you need to get close to someone in the city to be heard by him and don't disturb guys around yelling to your friend "Hello!". Anyway, if you're uncomfortable when somebody is too close, nobody will mind if you say so and ask to give your space.

Taking off the glove is like taking off the hat - you don't need to do it and it serves no actual purpose, but you show that you made the extra effort to greet a person. You tell them that you respect them enough to do this extra thing of taking off the glove to shake hand with them the way it's traditionally done. I think if it's very cold outside or if people are working outside they would bother less, expecially if they see each other often, but for someone you see rarely you's still take off the glove.

About handshakes: they are more common in Russia than US/Canada. In US it's more of formal thing. You shake hands on an interview or when you strike a deal etc. In Russia all guys shake hands just to say "hi" and women don't shake hands. About gloves - shaking hands with gloves on is like saluting to the officer with popcorn in your hand - it's disrespectful, because you are too lazy to free your hands to give a proper greeting. Although sometimes when it's -30 it's so inconvenient to take off gloves, that you both can agree to "shake it winter style" with gloves on :)

Removing your gloves before a handshake is not specific to Russia, it is actually a part of traditional European etiquette. Having two pronouns for 'you' (which is called T-V distinction), is also by no means unique or even specific to Russian language. This phenomena occurs in every Romance language including French and Spanish, and also some Germanic, including German. In fact, T-V distinction was not common in Russian until XVIII century when it was borrowed from French.

Regarding hands shaking - You really don't have to worry about that that much, so to say) Because during winter time everbody understand it's not gonna be very pleasant to shake someone's hand when it is minus 30 or 40 degrees celsius or even 15 or 20 without a glove (depending on the moisture level in a region cause the bigger the moisture level the more a feel of frost increases, if you understand what I mean). So it doesn't matter if you don't take off your glove, someone can just joke it away sometimes, but if he/she knows you are a foreigner - no one will even notice that.

Culturally in the West with the gloves aspect we'd just acknowledge with a head nod and so forth, we'd not extend a handshake as it would be somewhat rude to expect the other person to have to take off their glove, however it would be a rare situation as we don't wear gloves as its not cold enough. If we are ill we might refuse a handshake and say we didn't want to pass any germs.. which is more respectful than disrespectful.

Kristina D. This is a very common thing in Eastern Europe, it's a simple matter of normal, taking off the gloves, I feel that I show you respect, the second thing is I do not hide anything and I'm open. Also, as only a woman can be late (it's excusable but not necessarily), but. non-punctuality is seen as disrespect to (contempt of my time)

Come on, everybody is different, if you were unlucky enough to talk to people with a very small personal space, that definitely doesn't mean, that everyone will do this. Personally, I prefer staying as far from the person I am speaking with as i can, still being polite. Pretty sure, some not Russian people have little to no boundaries in everyday conversations too.

Sorry, but what does it mean "Russians have not houses, they have appartements"? The funny statement. In big cities, actually, there are a lot of apartment buildings, but there are also areas of private houses. And there are small satellite towns around the big cities, where there is a lot of private houses also

hi. about gloves, we take off gloves to show our honesty in a handshake when we great someone. it is a millennium long tradition of old. if what my grandfather told me about ancient traditions is true then when warriors greated each other they took off their battlegloves to show that they are unarmed and that they trust and respect each other. now in modern days this tradition did not loose it's actuality, so when you offer your hand for a handshake to someone and he refuse to do the same, it will be considered as an insult, and if he offer his hand with gloves on it is considered as a sign of mistrust and disrespect as if saying *you are not worthy of me*. that is why we shake bare hands always, even if ones hands are dirty. for example if my right hand is dirty and I need to great someone with handshake then I offer my hand and tell *sorry my hand is dirty* and my opponent will decide for himself if he take my forearm, to not get dirty himself, or my hand regardless of dirt. it is the same way why we always take off our hats when we come inside someone's home or any other building. it is another millennium old ancient tradition, when warrior or any other man actually walk inside someone's home he took off his helmet and usually held it with both hands, meaning that his hands were full with helmet and that this newcomer is not going to attack owners of this house and at the same time by taking off his helmet warrior let owners know that he trust them enough to leave his head unguarded as if saying *I come with peace and I am at your mercy*. sadly not many people remember why we shake hands or take off hats or do other things, but we do it non the less for centuries and I will make shure to pass theese traditions to my children and grandchildren at the least.

That is a great mission you guys are carrying! People all over the world are quiet ignorant about the foreighn cultures. We should know each other by the means of Internet - less corrupted informational resource. Not by the TV news, imposing the official ideology! Just face to face. Don't let them fool you. I don't mind it's religious, though I'm agnostic. As long as the God doesn't want the money, but doing good things - I like such God.

Shakin hands with hands in the gloves is like entering a house wearing your heavy duty boots. Here in my country you can do that but always is a little bit rude. Here the normal thing is enter the house wearing your shoes you carry from outside, but is improper that shoes come dirty. Is hard to explain. Btw here we have 3 pronouns for 2nd person (like ты или вы) we use tu and usted but also vos and the 3 pronouns has their own conjugations. The weird thing is that here as example 'vos' has a denostative use but in argentina, our neighbour, 'vos' is a colloquial 2nd pronoun. Пока пока 🖖✌✌
