This video is all about Russian minimal pairs. We´ll be learning to distinguish hard and soft consonants by ear. And by soft in this case, I mean consonants with the soft sign after them. Russian soft sign doesn’t have a sound of its own but it changes how the preceding consonant sounds. And this change may completely change the meaning of the word. It´s crucial that you learn to hear the difference between the Russian hard and soft consonants (formed by adding a soft sign after it) in order to understand Russian speakers.

Right now I can only reliably hear the difference between т -ть and л-ль, but I guess that's better than none! Minimal pairs in Irish give me similar trouble, but it is much harder to find minimal pairs recordings in Irish than in Russian so I'm determined to do better in Russian. Спасибо!

These exercises are great to improve your listening skills, but personally I think it'd be even better if you included after the practice a record of the pronunciation of both words of each pair just to differentiate better the sound. I guessed more than half correctly! but I coudn't help looking up the meaning of most words in a dictionary. I know it's not the purpose of the exercise but I can't just learn to pronunciate a word without knowing its meaning. Just a personal opinion Thank you for this video!!

I was going to make this comment, but better to upvote this one. This is a good lesson, but would be really excellent if we could hear the other word after the reveal. Even better, if for the *first* few exercises, we could hear both, then have to guess which order they were in. Thanks for this video!

Several others have said this, but I believe that this would have been more informative had you pronounced them both. Do you have a video in which you do that? This particular video was a bit disappointing, but overall, I learn well from your channel.

Here are the “problem words” in Russian, where the way it is spelt is *not* the way it is pronounced. Because I couldn’t find this list anywhere else, I decided to put it together myself. I hope it’s helpful. *Silent consonants:* здра́в̷ствуйте ~ hello чу́в̷ство ~ feeling звёзд̷ный ~ starry ланд̷ша́фт ~ landscape по́зд̷но ~ late пра́зд̷ник ~ festival се́рд̷це ~ heart со́л̷нце ~ sun гру́ст̷ный ~ sad изве́ст̷ный ~ well known ле́ст̷ный ~ flattering ме́ст̷ный ~ local окре́ст̷ность ~ vicinity ча́ст̷ный ~ private счаст̷ли́вый ~ happy *Where ч sounds like ш :* чⷲто ~ what?, that чⷲто́бы ~ in order to коне́чⷲно ~ of course наро́чⷲно ~ on purpose оче́чⷲник ~ spectacle case пра́чечⷲная ~ laundry ску́чⷲно ~ boring яи́чⷲница ~ fried eggs Ильи́ничⷲна ~ Ilinichna Са́ввичⷲна ~ Savvichna Ники́тичⷲна ~ Nikitichna бу́лочⷲная ~ bakery моло́чⷲная ~ dairy *Where г sounds like х :* лёгⷯкий ~ light, easy ле́гⷯче ~ easier мя́гⷯкий ~ soft мя́гⷯче ~ softer бухгⷯа́лтер ~ book keeper Богⷯ ~ God (only in the nominative) *Where г sounds like в :* сегⷡо́дня ~ today егⷡо́ ~ accusative / genitive of он / оно́ Word final ~егⷡо / ~огⷡо but *NOT* with мно́го and its derivatives (немно́го, etc...)

Boost Your Russian My pleasure :-) I’m not a native speaker, so I’m not sure if this is a complete list. This is just what I’ve found in my studies and searching through various grammars and articles on the web. If there is anything missing, I would be forever grateful if you could please let me know? It’s a pet peeve of mine that students of Russian can learn the wonderfully phonetic Cyrillic alphabet and the rules of pronunciation, only to find they have to learn the exceptions to the rules sporadically. There aren’t that many exceptions. I feel they should be presented together with the rules, so we can rest assured knowing there won’t be any embarrassing surprises in the future. But maybe I’m the only person who feels this way?! lol

I got maybe 3 correct. I wish you'd given at least a few comparisons to start between the similar words to demonstrate the difference better. I still don't really know what the difference is. I'll be over here saying this is my take instead of this is my brother. 🤣
