Su-25 was used in many conflicts, starting with the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, all the way to the current war in Ukraine. One of lesser known involvements of this legendary attack aircraft was the Abkhazian War of 1992-93. While gaining independence from the USSR, Georgia lost control over its autonomous province which it tried to restore militarily in August 1992. Despite initial success, the conflict dragged on for more than a year. Russian military joined the fray and fought on the side of Abkhazian separatists, although without admitting it officially. Both sides used the Su-25 with various degree of success. Interestingly, on several occasions these planes met their enemy counterparts and fights developed. What was the outcome of these aerial duels and how was the Frogfoot used by the involved parties, find out in this video.
DCS World with its Caucasus map enabled this historical reenactment to take place on real locations.

Great video i am myself from georgia, i can tell that that SU-25 were built in tbilisi aviation factory and after the collapse of the soviet union russians took many in 1991 they also took many T-72 APCs and IFVs BMP-2 mostly, war in abkhazia is a big trauma in my country where brother took up arm against brother. Until the Soviet collapse all single seat Su-25 was built in Tbilisi, but even so we left almost no flyable plane. It will be good if we ever see in any simulator or game SU-25KM Scorpion, Georgian modification with NATO compatibility and state of the art digital equipment.

Excuse me for my english, but it's very interesting video. I knew the conflict of 2008 between Georgia and Russia and Ossétie, but not this one. Today Abhkazian men fight with the men of the Donbass in Ukrainian war together in the same place with the same weapons. So we see that the situation is more complex as we say to us. And recently, GEORGIA ask to enter in NATO, so you could imagine the situation if it will be a reality. This war start again immediatly with Russia, but il will be more violent than this video.

This war is very confusing when the Russians were essentially selling wrapons to both sides of the conflict although they aided the Abkhazians more than the Georgians
@showtime112
@showtime112 2 жыл бұрын
So it seems. I've read that the Russian leadership was leaning towards Georgia to some extent, but local commanders were in favor of Abkhazians. Eventually, this attitude prevailed. That reminds me of the Ogaden War. Soviets still had military advisors i Somalia while selling weapons to Ethiopia at the same time.

When Georgia seceded from the Soviet Union in 1991, the Russians were deprived of Georgia's Black Sea ports: Batumi, Poti, and Sukhumi; recall also that with the secession of Ukraine that same year, Russia was already dispossessed of Odessa, Sevastopol, Nikolayev, and other Ukrainian ports as naval bases. So the Russians probably saw support of the Abkhazian separatists as a way to gain access to at least one port on the Black Sea, besides Novorossisk, outside of the Sea of Azov.

@@stanleylaham8932 Every now and then, some comment such as yours shows up and it deeply puzzles me. You obviously didn't even bother to google any facts, you have some vague memories about some war from the 2000's and you presume it must have been the only one. And you presume someone would make a video with extremely specific details of war operations but without checking dates? Why? Why do presume something like that? The war you talk about is from 2008 and it wasn't a 'blitz on Abkhazia' but on South Ossetia. It's a different Georgian province. This war is a different war and it indeed took place in the early 1990s. Or are you one of those people who deliberately says nonsense just to provoke others? 😁
